The St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) came storming back into government in Monday’s general election, five years after it was swept aside by the United Workers Party (UWP).
SLP Leader Dr. Kenny Anthony told St. Lucians that the “days ahead will be hard, it will be difficult” and that the right message would be sent by not declaring a public holiday as has been the tradition over the years to celebrate the victory.

There is nothing wrong with Lennox working as a media consultant for any political party outside of Dominica. This is no way should be applied, compared and ilfiltrated into the situation in Dominica.

I like that he mentioned an important word: WORK. It is important that the people of a nation build a metality of working hard towards a common goal which is for the betterment of their respective countries. The results will never be immediate. I think a lot of our people need to take a lesson from this work mentality. We need to set long-term and sustainable goals for ourselves and for Dominica and we need to WORK towards it. I am tired of hearing the “I want it now” approach coming from my fellowmen. I am tired of hearing of “handouts”. I am tired of feeling like the country is dragging along when we need to work! Roads and buildings are fine…but we need long-term job opportunities.
Please, we need to find ways of boosting our economy through work-related schemes, not just one-time deals. We cannot depend on grants all the time. We need to show ourselves, the rest of the region and the world that we recognize our strengths and we are aware of our resources.
We have a nearly dormant manufacturing industry when we have so much food falling off trees and going to waste. Everytime I travel across the region I always go to the supermarkets and examine the products on the shelves. You see products from Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica… You hardly see anything from Dominica.
We can ‘can’ our fruits and export them. We can increase production of our soaps. We can bottle coconut water for greater distribution. We can increase our plantain chips and banana chips production for export…even have cassava chips, or anything new. The sky is the limit.
With all that said and done, this can only be achieved if we can attract the relevant investments…this can be done by our own domincans or outside investments. We need to work. We need to get moving…
While what you say may be true. You need not be emotional, but REALISTIC. Canning of produce and manufacturing requires CHEAP ENERGY to be competitive. That is what countries like Trinidad have over us. It is not just suffient to have the raw materials, you must be able to maufacture it realtively cheaply to have a comparative advantage. No business will operate at a lost.
the government’s push to develop geothermal energy is therefore the catalyst that is going to help us acheive all the things that we have been talkingt about. It will thereby give us that ADDED ADVANTAGE over our neighbours of not only having quality raw materials to process (such as our abundant fruits), but being able to do so comparatively CHEAP. That is when our economy will really have the opportunity to take off!!
So take it easy bro. Things are happening (maybe not at the pace you like), but believe you me, in 8-10 years from now we should begin to be the envy of the rest of the Caribbean. We are already developing the basic infrastructure to take us there, and when we do get to the other level, no one will be able to catch up!!!
