Political leader of the opposition United Workers Party, Lennox Linton, has suggested that Dominicans take to the streets to protest the decision by the government to nominate Alix Boyd-Knights as the president of Dominica.
“The people of Dominica have a moral obligation to indicate that they are not in sync with this morally reprehensible act of elevating Alix Boyd-Knights to the president,” Linton told Q95 on Wednesday morning.
When asked by host Matt Peltier if he was suggesting that citizens take to the street, Linton said, “absolutely,” pointing out that he would be part of the protest action.
“I am a citizen of the commonwealth of Dominica who is concerned, had been concerned and remains concerned about greater level of decency and civility in our public affairs and this is an assault on our hopes and dreams,” he said. “I think the people of Dominica have a duty now, a duty they cannot avoid, to go out and protest this atrocious decision by the prime minister and his cabinet.”
Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, confirmed on Wednesday morning that his cabinet has taken the decision to nominate Boyd-Knights as head of state, replacing Eluid Williams, whose terms expires in October. This was done after consultation with leader of the opposition, Hector John. “I can confirm that in fact the cabinet has taken that decision,” he said.
But Linton believes the Speaker of the House is not the best person for that job pointing to her track record in parliament.
“She has not done a proper job as Speaker of the House,” he noted. “She has been biased, she has been extremely unfair, she has been unjust and she has been hostile to the members of the opposition United Workers Party.”
Linton stated that the role of president requires an “even higher level of balance, fairness, justice” and requires an individual to be “above the political fray” which he said Boyd-Knights is “completely incapable” of.
“I find this a brutal assault on the hopes and dreams of all Dominicans who yearn for a higher level of decency and civility in our public affairs,” he noted.
Linton also pointed out that the decision by the government demonstrates disdain for the people of Dominica. “I think this decision demonstrates Mr. Skerrit’s utter disdain and contempt for the wishes of the people that we should do better in our governance affairs,” he remarked. “That we should do better in lifting the standard of debate in the parliament and the way our business in parliament is conducted.”
Linton noted that John will be communicating with the prime minister on the matter later today.

The nomination and subsequent appointment of Alix Knights by Skerrit is deliberate. Skerrit knows he is going to loose the next General Elections, what better way to place a Trojan Horse in the mix of the UWP Government. I am a supporter of the Labour Party and I do not support the nomination.
However, a demonstration “against the nomination” makes no sense. If the UWP does not support the nomination, all they have to do is nominate their choice of candidate in accordance with the Constitution. They can put the Government on the spot by selecting someone whom they feel would be difficult for the Government to vote against.
Everything is not about demonstrations or trying to flex muscles or disrupting or “babbling” on the radio or rabble-rousing.

If I were to advice UWP I would encourage them to nominate one of the following for president and see how Skerrit would react:
1. Felix Gregoire
2. Shawn Douglas
3. Claude Weeks
All three have served Dominica well and although the first two in particular have always supported

I don’t support the street protest …that’s exactly what Skerrit wants. If a protest, let it be organized by another group outside of the UWP. Better yet, since nobody is in love with Alix Boyd Knight UWP should go ahead and nominate a well respected servant of the soil who is not involved in public politics like a Claude Weeks for example, and if Skerrit insists that he wants Ms. Knight, then let him go ahead with her. At the end of the day we have nothing to lose and everything to win since she would no longer be in the house to stand in our way. At the end of the day, come election time, that would give Dominicans another reason to vote Skerrit out because no right thinking Dominican wants to have Alix Boyd Knight as president of Dominica. I see the prime minister seems hell bent on provoking a political crisis.
The prime minister should read the Book of Proverbs, chapter 17, verse 14: “The start of strife is like the opening of a dam; therefore, check a quarrel before it begins”.
That PM has a lot of proverbs to read pa pa. Not too long ago he was reminded to read Proverbs 5:15 which reads, “Drink water out of your own cistern, and running waters out of your well.” Did he listen to good advice-Hell no.
Many persons are against the nomination citing the lady’s performance in parliament as bias. However, I think that she has effectively carried out her role in parliament and not allowed the parliamentarians to bring the parliament into disrepute,even if I personally do not like her.
As a supporter of the UWP I certainly would not support the appointment of ABK as President because of the manner she has abused her power as Speaker of the House. But I must ask the question; what will this protest achieve? We know Mr. Skerritt very well and know that no protest would cause him to change his mind unless you are able to get 10,000 people in the street. That leads me to my next point. Past protest action by the party has resulted in very small turnouts, maybe a few hundred, if than many people. Protest with a hundred people only expose the party and show the party as a “group of troublesome people.”
UWP has been gaining great momentum recently and the PM is very aware. He realizes that the next election will be much tougher than the last. I believe the UWP should be mindful of the impact of any action they take now that could slow down this momentum. That does not mean they should allow the MP to run over them; but just be mindful of the impact of their actions. The MP will try many strategies to slow down the UWP momentum and may be forced to call a rush election to prevent the party from becoming better organized and making greater inroads. Personally I think a mass evening rally on Independence St would create a greater impact than a street protest with a hundred people. While a few 1000 people will show for a rally, many people will not show up for the protest as they may not be able to get time off from work or they may be “afraid” of being seen.
I say we shouldn’t have no head of state… they basically paying dem to do nothing… it’s the government who vote d lady… obviously, whatever they put in front a president they will sign it! I say no damn president!

It’s a long time my eyes is on Linton, since in the time of “WHAT ABOUT” I use to call him our LARRY KING. I saw the potential in the man, I always thought he could be the Prime Minister one day, but what I did not see and know is that he was a school drop out. You are correct. Those who are truthful and tell it like it is are not liked by such people who themselves are bad enough. They have seen and heard her at work but they do not know her in private and socially. They overlook her experience and capability. Some of them know absolutely nothing about her. And who are they anyway?

We have read the comments of some of them. This is why they think in that manner. They do not appreciate the good in others. Being president, the highest position of the state within our system comes with a lot of limitations. While studying in Trinidad I did a course in Politics and was shocked to discover that a lot of the Powers that the president has within our system are under the advice of the Prime minister in power. Some of us need to familiarize ourselves with what the constitution allows the president of the state to do, and under which conditions his/her powers can be exercised.

I fully support Mr. Linton in his effort to have a street protest against Alix Knight’s appointment. In order for the protest to be successful, he must have the cooperation of not only the supporters of the UWP but the Business Sector, bus and truck drivers to name a few. At least Roseau must be closed down for approximately three hours in an effort to give workers an opportunity to participate in the protest.

dat is the same thing a friend of mine was saying, she said that the UWP not making an impact of the citizens. It’s just a shame people rather vote according to a colour, pers, personality or party and they refuse to admit one fact… the country needs a change.
