Members of Falklands Islands Legislative Assembly to visit Dominica

Two members of the Falklands Islands Legislative Assembly, Hon. Mike Summers and Hon. Roger Edwards, will be visiting Dominica from 15-16 November.

The Members of the Legislative Assembly will be meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and senior officials to discuss the Falkland Islands.  They will share first-hand their experiences of managing the Falkland Islands economy and internal governance, but also the challenges they face in the United Nations for support for their right to self determination; the very principle enacted by the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica when choosing to become independent from the United Kingdom in 1978.  Respect for this principle remains a cornerstone of the United Nations Charter.

The Falkland Islanders remain a small, vulnerable, but distinct and resolute island people.  Like many peoples in the Americas, many of the Islanders can trace their families back over several generations, having arrived from Europe through natural waves of ‘free choice’ migration in the mid-1800s.  The current Falklands people descend from the first known people to have settled the Falkland Islands over generations, as it had no indigenous population.

Many advances have been made in the constitutional relationship between the Falklands and the UK since those early colonial days.  It is now a relationship based on partnership, shared values and the Falklands peoples’ right to determine whether they wish to retain their link with the UK.  It is very different to the relationship that Dominica had with the UK before its independence.

The Falkland Islands Constitution devolves responsibility for all issues, with the exception of defence and foreign affairs.  The Falklands has developed its own full legislative and executive branches of government, with a dedicated civil service to implement Falklands’ government policy.

these guys should be speaking to the former Colonel, Right Honorable Patrick Roland John. This is the man who brought Dominica to independence. It was his leadership which made us an independent republic. not eugenia charles or anyone else but PJ. Give the man his jacket this time…

These guys needed to talk to PJ. Patrick John, he is the one who took Dominica to independence.
He is the one with the knowledge, not those we have there like Maynard and Charles Severind.
That lot just inherited another man hard work. They don’t know .Who is deputy PM of Dominica. If is Ambose, look debay, maybe those guys coming to spy the land to invade Dominica.Because they realise that Dominica a beautifull land is wasted on idiots, both opposition and present parliament.

I do not think that they are seeking knowledge about independence from anyone. They want international support at the United Nations since Argentina still claims the Falkland Islands. The Argentines argue that their people were expelled from the islands when the British finally occupied them in 1833. The Brits took everybody’s land and gave it to their people or whoever they want; (a la Palestine).

remember that war pretty well…back in the 80s the US had to help their good friends the British as the Argentinas gave them a pretty stife battle sunk destroyers of the Royal Navy…but the British prevailed in the end……

How can they invade what is already theirs?

Yes they have oil (and lots of it), so I dont see the UK giving them their independence without a struggle, and Argentina wont go to war with the UK again.
