No new political party – Fontaine

Fontaine

Economist Thompson Fontaine is describing as misleading reports that a new opposition political group may be forming in Dominica.

But Fontaine has confirmed that he has been meeting with political parties in Dominica to discuss the ways to move the country forward.

“There is no such thing that is formed as yet; whilst we’ve been talking with different groups there is nothing set. There is nothing on paper as yet,” he declared.

Fontaine, who has been quite vocal on national issues, however pointed out that the emergence of another political group in Dominica would serve as a new alternative and deepen democracy on the island.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit too has welcomed talk of the formation of a new political group saying the move would prove democracy “is alive” in Dominica.

I think in all fairness, a different approach to governance is needed in our beloved country at this time. There seem to be a general perception that the current cadre of political leaders have either run out of steam or have failed our expectations. The political dogfights, now common, seem more like individual postering than attempts to provide genuine leadership. If the current politicians are unable or unwilling to rise to the level of Statesmanship and Honest Governance now desparately needed, then talk of a new party will florish and gain momentum. This will also provide a vehicle for young professionals to give governance a try, a move which is being delayed by the continuing dogfights and the increasing perpection of dishonesty and trickery in national leadership.

Dr. Thompson Fontaine as a born Dominican has every right to his opinions. He has every right to share his opinion with whoever may wish to listen to him. Nothing/noone can or should attempt to detract from that. He is on solid legal grounds.

My beef however with the goodly doctor and the media in Dominica is. Who gave Dr. Fontaine the unbridelled authority to pontificate on every conceivable issue. He is a trainied economist. Far more competent in his field than perhaps I could ever understand the basic “matchbox” principle of economics. Certainly so. However, is that enough to give him the authority to school me and others on every issue that affects the development process here? Did I require Dr. Fontaine to tell me that any expansion of the Lybian crisis will have an impact on my dollar and Dominica – infact the world? Did I require an IMF economist to tell me that? Come on media people. Weeks before during the Egyptian crisis I worried about the potential for the disruption of world trade given the fact that Egypt controlled the Suez Canal. Most Dominican did not need an IMF economist to tell a simple fact. But the media jumped chose to make a news item out of that particular statement of the good Dr.

Dominica does not now have a program with the IMF. However the IMF comes here and do periodic reports. Dominica is perhaps the only country with some success following a program of austerity with the IMF. There are innumerable examples of near chaos in countries that have gone down the road of the IMF. Dominica is the exceptional. Dr. Fontaine is on record saying that Dominica’s experience is so unique that there were no riots and burning tyres on the streets as a result of peiople protesting. tAt the time of Dominica’s program with the IMF, Dr. Thompson Fontaine was in the employ of the IMF. The UWP took serious offence to Dr. Fontaine and used his own words on the platforms in a manner to seek to agitate for public mischief. Dr. Fontaine I am sure can remember that. At that time too, Dr. Fontaine went on IMF austerity packaged assignments many far flung places in the world such as to parts of Africa and Asia – Afghanistan in particular. He gave unqualified support to the program of austerity in Dominica.

Dominica got rave economic performance reviews from all and sundry from outside of Dominica for its succwess inimplementing the IMF program. The loyal opposition in Dominica to this day has never, ever supported or accepted the need for the IMF supported program.

Alas! a few years later in 2011, Dr. Fontaine has announced that he is no longer with the IMF. He has resigned he says. And so with eyes firmly fixed on a political career among the poor, downtrodden, an immoral and unethical people, unable to think fop themselves and can vote only for what they can get (handouts), he seem to suddenly reneged on his former employers economic theories and has labelled Dominica an economic failure. That is what Dr. Fontaine must explain to the Dominican electorate. He must tell us what has gone wrong with the IMF policies. He must also tell us why does the IMf continue to give Dominica good economic reports. He must tell us why he supported the program back then. Is it because he wanted to protect his job and so sang the pied piper’s tune? These are just a few of the issues Dr. Fontaine has to address.

At the height of Dominica’s austerity measure the UWP with whom Dr. Fontaine has aligned himself is on record denouncing the program. The UWP held a “rally” in Mero and Mr. Lennox Linton was the featured speaker. He Lennox described an economic scenario then about an imminent collapse in Dominica. Dr. Fontaine was then on the other side, well entrenched as a “Dominican born economist” at the IMF. Today the table have turned fro Thompson. Lennox has not changed his tune however. Dr. Fontaine on the other hand seemingly has changed. Looks like he has lost faith in the medicine of his “former” bosses. He must tell us why.

Could not have said it better. I did not even know he was no longer with the IMF. Many folks who align themselves now with the Opposition are free to do so, but their motives are clear. They did not get some request granted and thus decided to join the opposition to get request. The fact is this, the opposition needs to get into office and Dominicans will never allow Eddo to lead them again.

Well, he said not yet; I take that to mean that there is still time and the thought process is ongoing. Dominica, to include the current administration, definitely needs this. It will motivate the existing government to do better.

Any new political party would need to run for at least two terms to present a real challenge to the current DLP administration, especially if Prime Minister Skerritt remains at the helm. It would definitely be in the best interest of a new party to find ways to discredit Mr. Skerritt because in my opinion, he is the party. Without him, DLP will have some major challenges.

Dr, I say please pull up your sleeves, get a strong team together and throw your hat in the ring. Dominica needs you.

Another party would be a “BIG Waste”……. Unless……….. it’s really going to be effective!!! There’s already the UWP and the DFP. It would be better to invigorate these parties instead of forming a new one!

THERE IS NO NEED FOR A NW POLITICAL PARTY IN Da. BY NOW WE KNOW BETTER THAN TO BELEIVE SKERRIT WHEN WE HEAR HIM BLOWING HIS HORNS. HE HAS HIS ALTERIA MOTIVES AND WE WILL NOT FALL FOR HIS FOXY TRIX.

THE FREEDOM PARTY IS THE BEST ANSWER FOR DOMINICA TODAY. WITH DFP, WE WILL HAVE THESE QUALITIES AND MORE BACK IN POLITICS, INTEGRITY, RESPECT FOR THE RULE OF LAW, OUR CHILDREN WILL HAVE ROLE MODELS IN POLITICS, HIGH EMPLOYMENT RATE, BALANCED BUDGET, IMPROVED TOURISM INDUSTRY, I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT NOT ENOUGH TIME.
THE FEEDOM PARTY WILL COME BACK TO RULE DOMINICA. LEAST WE FORGET.

DOMINICANS, WE NEED TO FACE THE TRUTH OR IT WILL BE BROUGHT TO US. STAND UP AND DENOUNCE THE INEPTITUDE THAT WE ARE SEEING IN THIS dlp GOV’T.

Dr. Fontaine has no US passport or US green card all he has is a Dominica Passport with an American Visa in it. He was working for the IMF not the American Government. I suspect Labour getting scared of Dr. Fontaine a bright, young, grass roots, astute and honest note i say honest leader.
