Opposition protest a joke Douglas says

The protest was held on Monday
The protest was held on Monday

Minister for Trade, Energy and Employment, Ian Douglas, has described a protest staged by the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) on Monday as “a joke”.

The peaceful protest was held outside the Financial Center in Roseau based on what UWP leader, Lennox Linton, described as the “abuse of the public money in Dominica.”

Linton said they were protesting the government’s decision to hire what they described as “rejects” of the last general election in jobs such as Director of the Economic Council, Liaison in the Ministry of Health, Liaison in Diaspora Affairs, Advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture and Analyst in Poverty Reduction.

Linton claims that those defeated candidates are making, from the public purse, $80,000 a year, which is $50,000 more than they would have been receiving if they were in opposition.

But Douglas believes that the demonstration was premature and there was no justification for it.

“The protest action is a joke,” he said. “We are hardly 90 days out of the election period and the country has already settled down and have moved back into work mode. We are looking forward to a number of projects that the government has enunciated in its manifesto and during the elections and we are very focused on the implementation and the execution of those projects.”

According to Douglas the electorate spoke clearly during the election held in December 2014..

“The country has spoken,” Douglas noted. “The opposition laid its plans before the electorate during the campaign period and so did the government and the people had an extended period, that is the better part of four to five weeks, to make a decision who to choose and the people understood and identified with the direction of the government and the Dominica Labour Party.”

Douglas said the UWP must change its strategy of ‘propaganda’ and ‘sensation’ since this has no impact on the Dominican electorate.

“The United Workers Party must recognize that the strategy that it has used for the last fifteen years that it has been in opposition, has not worked for them,” he stated. “Propaganda and sensation really doesn’t move the Dominican electorate. The Dominican electorate is a very mature electorate who is convinced by facts and figures and hard physical evidence on the ground.”

Have you people looked at what drives the economy of the country? have you taken time off and see how the states money is being spent? have you all noticed how much wastage a small country like Dominica is producing, have you noticed how much shortage and neglect the services of the state are being short changed;, while political supporters are flourishing, with all kinds of political jobs, building materials, judicial favours, and we all cast a blind eye on how and where the country should genuinely earn the next dollar; pluis tar, pluis twis -just 5 more years; the opposition is 100% right, those who have eyes let them see.

Is this the same Ian Douglas who said the following about the Prime Minister?

“I have had several examples of him saying things about me and have always tried to deny it in the interest of the party.”
“I have given my heart and soul to this guy.”
“The person he is saying things about you to, if they were to turn their back and go get you some cold water he would do the same things to them.”

With such statemens coming from him, how can we take Ian seriously.

Boy this labor party is a real bunch of jokers boy and Ian have the guts to open his mouth. The labor party after having the largest cabinet in the history of the country still have to go out there and bring in these set of rejects to be additional burden on the taxpayers of the country. What is the increase in GDP that this country is expected to achieve, are we expected to grow by 5% are there permanent jobs being created and are things being made better in the country? This labor party have done absolutely nothing apart from the normal activities, yet still they have cost the tax payers increasing amounts.

This country is heading for a collapse and i hope is not the ordinary citizens that is asked to pay for it, i hope them labor boys and girls that are sucking on the tits of the meg cow will pay for it.

    March 18, 2015

This is a lovely picture; correction! this could have been a lovely picture if the people holding the placards were from a pre-school. At a Christmas play the children were holding Bristol boards with the teacher’s lovely handwriting delivering a Christmas message. The children were well dressed in their Sunday Best beautifully in line as they recited to us the true meaning of Christmas. One or two fidgeted as you would expect from kindergarten children looking forward to perform for their parents and being on stage. At least the children had a message we all understood.

I cannot understand the message the UWP is trying to tell us. They cannot be asking for a raise after three months in their job & for what? The amount of protests they have had since the elections?

It could not be that people rejected at the polls (as they put it) is being employed by the State. It cannot be that!! Because we know the State is paying Opposition Rejects (their words).

Peace to all! Its is extremely disheartening and pathetic just reading the words spoken by a government minister about the uwp protest. Mr Dauglas take it for granted that the vast majority of Dominicans are struggling to make ends meet at the moment. For Mr Dauglas to call such important protest action a joke is to insult the intelligence of Dominicans.
Its the opposition’s duty to ask questions and keep the government in order. To many pay back jobs and a scandalous use of state funds by this paralysed and out of ideas government.
They promised Dominican kids Tablets in January, its March and not even paracetamol or panadol multi symptom these poor kids got.

Mr. Douglas this is a responsible opposition, bringing to the people attention a discrepancy in governmnet policy. They fought the election on a platform of youth employment and the governmnet is using money which could be used to emply at least five young peopleto employ old age candidates rejected by the electorate. The protest is valid and to be commended, however Mr. douglas need to inform Dominicans why is it necessary to kep Mr. George on the government payroll rather thn employ the youth.

Time to get your boots on and look around and see what you can contribute to the development of this country until the time comes to go to vote again. You can support who you want but by the time the 5 years come around, you are at the same place, the same attitude.. no growth. Do you think when the UWP wins the election & becomes the Government that they can change anything regarding economy etc. Running a country is no joke … When you out opposing, it is ok to talk a lot but instead of that talk, Opposition people and supporters need to demonstrate all their parlayment & do something for the electorate to see.

Mr Blackmore is correct in his assertions about the Dominican electorate, in as much the government have operated in the past 15 years without accountability or transparency and with silence, and each time they have gone to the country to be held to account, they have been given a mandate to carry on with business as usual. The only thing the faithful can do is to bring to the light as much as they can the wrongdoings in the hope that someone will be caught with their trousers down and breaking of the law or constitution will be their downfall.
In following the rule of law, there has to be reality. And any expectations of change anytime soon is a forlorn fantasy.
Therefore the brave must continue being brave and keeping the faith that they are too blaze not to be caught out sooner or later. Getting rid of individuals by the rule of law may not get rid of a government, but its a start.

  34. immature
    March 17, 2015

This is hardly a response to the protest action as Douglass could not address the concerns presented in any form. It’s very easy to be dismissive when confronted with a tough question. A “mature” response would be to explain the benefits of these new positions and a statement that the country can indeed afford such extravagancies. Clearly Douglass can’t, so instead he jumps back to this stolen mandate. Too bad Dominicans are too immature and short sighted to demand real time explanations from their government.

Is Douglas aware, in Dominica, their are representatives of CNN, Caribbean News Agencies, I.P News and our very own DNO one of the most popular portal news agencies in the Caribbean, like the man believes what happens in Dominica stays in Dominica. The UWP has come out with a new strategy , they don’t need no big crowd, all they need is the total press to be represented, that is all, that is all. “learning without thought is labour lost; thought without learning is perilous” (Confusius).
Mr. Douglas, if you were smart you would have used this demonstration to point out that these citizens are exercising their constitutional right without hindrance from your government. That would have been the wise thing to do instead of expressing ridicule.
I leave you with another bit of wisdom from Confusius:
“Without an acquaintance with the rules of propriety, it is impossible for the character to be established”.
You may confer with our Chines friends about the veracity of this quote.

i dont live in Da so i am not quite sure if i am right. I thought NEP was aimed at employing the young unemployed of Dominica and not hardbacks like ambrose who already got their chances and blew it away. Ian its really alarming that you guys dont care for the young unemployed of DA but only for your inner circle. just letting you guys know that roseau the city spoke this election but im hoping the rest of the country follow next election. i am from the country but these guys from the country voted you guys cause they dont feel the sufferation the youths in town feel . they only run in the backyard break a part fig pull out a dasheen and cook it with the fish they catch on the rock. you aint got money in town you stay hungry, i really feel sorry for our poor brothermen but not you ian you dont care. but time will tell who feels it know it

I can inform you that Lennox Linton neither smokes nor drinks alcoholic beverages. He is sober at at all times He does not suffer from hysterics, mood swings or any mania or is prone to using foul language. Is he perfect? No, the man is boringly straight and steady as a rock.

Them man in UWP don’t have work to do? Every time is a protest, protest and more protest. That’s why Dominicans did NOT vote UWP into power. The country nice. You’ll are losers and just trying to embarrass the country and make it look bad every time. When the tourist see that constant stupid nest, no wonder they afraid to come to Dominica.

learn to spell its stupidness not stupidnest. And for your informaion Dominica is a democratic countyr you have the right to express your opinion. So how would a tourist be embarrassed at citizens protesting? Wouldn’t they be more embarrassed at the state of the city? the roads? the main hospital? the airport? what about the bed bug infection? what about the vagrants? what about the NEP? What about the coconut tablets? What about the state of the art hospital? What about the state of the art college that’s falling apart? what about the high rate of crime because of unemployment? Huh? You and your labour party jokers need to consider this instead of checking Lennox. He’s blessed and highly favored.

Before you try and criticize anyone spelling, learn to spell. The word is country and not the crap you put. Also learn to read while you are at it because i NEVER said anything about embarrassed. I said afraid. But yet again considering it’s only illiterate fools that support UWP, it doesn’t surprise me to see your ignorant response. Stay in school. Or should i say go back. It’s never to late

I support the UWP for letting the publi now what’s going on and keeping you guys on all you TOES. whether some don’t like what they are fighting for, I for sure wants to know what’s going on . If left up to you guys , we will never , never know the truth. You tell so many lies we don’t even know when you are actually telling the truth. Lennox and Team Dominic God bless you and continue to be our guard . And by the way Ian , is NEP still operating?, because i see your director is PS now.

Why doesnt UWP do something more productive with their time? when Labour wasnt in power they went out, got contacts and got the ball rolling, projects were happening. So its your turn, show us what you can do. Get projects going so by the time elections come we can say, yes Lennox and the UWP will work for us.

I am really surprised you didn’t say “jobs such as Director of the Economic Council, Liaison in the Ministry of Health, Liaison in Diaspora Affairs, Advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture and Analyst in Poverty Reduction” .

“Are here to stay”! since that’s what you said about NEP

Even though Dominicans did not vote for the UWP, no one can deny that their concern is a legitimate one. Why would a government even consider hiring some of the people who have had opportunities to perform and didn’t! Of what interest is it to the country? Of what economic benefit is it?

I thought Mrs Benjamin, who by her own admission is overly qualified to deal with abuse and her field is social welfare – Why then is she in diaspora affairs? Wouldn’t her knowledge and expertise be better employed in the Ministry of Social Welfare? If that were the case I could tolerate her employment.

anyway; Would be nice to see reports on the achievements of those particular projects at the end of…

Ian is right, the people gave the DLP a mandate to do what they see fit to get the country on the right track so if the PM see it fit to hire people he trust to do the work he wants done who is Linton to question that. He speaks of who the people rejected but the people the PM hired is not in parliament, unlike Lenox who took all the people the people rejected and put them in parliament. How long will this guy remain a novice?

“The Dominican electorate is a very mature electorate who is convinced by facts and figures and hard physical evidence on the ground.”

Mr Douglas, if that was the case you would not have won the Portsmouth seat. Dominicans are, anything but mature and able to use facts/evidence to make decisions – they are emotional, impulsive people who vote based on the activities around them during the “5 weeks” leading up to election. Dominicans live for the moment – as I am sure you know!

Totally agree with this statement. Majority if the Dominican electorate are people who do not read, listen and analyze situations for themselves and that’s a shame. The things that are happening in this government are unbelievable and in all my professional years that’s the worse I have seen. People are put in positions that they are neither qualified nor have the experience for. Think of Mr. N in his new position in Finance but they know why He was put there. Later will tell – this is just one of the craziness happening in the public service under Labour.
