Permission to open medical centre in St. Joseph denied – Opposition

Opposition Leader Hector John

Opposition leader Hector John has called for answers regarding what he claims is the refusal to grant permission to Dr. Curvin Ferreira to open a medical center in the St. Joseph area.

John, who was speaking at the sixth session of the People’s Parliament last night in St. Joseph, is convinced that the center would have served as an avenue for employment in the area.

“Do you know that Dr. Ferreira and his partner applied for permission to have a hospital in your area and it was turned down? Brothers and sisters tomorrow, ask Honourable Kelver Darroux why permission was not given to Dr. Ferreira to open a medical center in your area that would help to provide employment in the area… to the people of Layou, St Joseph, Mero, and Salisbury. Where are the youth skills training for the young men?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party Claudius Sanford echoed John’s call.

“It is of concern to us within the United Workers party… some people, they have not understood the extent to which a medical school or a facility of such magnitude can bring in area. And we don’t have to go too far, we can just have to look at Portsmouth and see what has happened in Portsmouth with the Ross Medical School…” he stated.

Dominica News Online is still seeking an update on the matter and will bring you details as soon as it  becomes available. So far, all attempts to reach Dr. Ferreira have been futile.

Let me see if I am getting this correctly, John is saying that a medical center in Senjoe and then I am reading that the Doc is suing govt for not allowing him the permission to set up a medical school in Senjoe/ Is this the same person John is refferning too?? So which is it, a school or medical center?? Then again, this is another lack on the part of mister John to get all the facts before he just goes on the media and rant on unfactual stuff.

What a bloody shame, you would have been better off in the house to voice such concerns since you might have gotten your fact correct. The way I see things you just got a spissore and ran with it before crossing all dots and T’s. Boy you really making yourself look like the true zeyzey you really are. Go attend to the needs of the folsk in bawi before you get in senjoe bzness.
The Doctor himself need to go pay off all the outstanding debts he owes the country before he can think about law suit. I am not a govt supporter but I do hope that the govt can counter sue him real good.

a medical center is good but we need a facility where we can have special equipments like lazers and scanners especially the equipment to detect cancer early because this is what it killing most people nowadays.
    Not just another medical center.

  7. A Set of Questions
    December 9, 2010

I would like this Doctor to make his business plan available to the public for us all to see.

He should also show us his financing plan – where he intended to sought the money to finance his Medical School.

For the sake of transparency, this man must publicly reveal the status of his existing finances so that we the public can judge for ourselves if he has the financial capacity for such an undertaking by himself or if he was seeking funding from an outside University.

Also it would be wise if he can share with us the public the recognitions that he has sought from internationally recognized medical facilities for this venture and the number of these faculties that gave a commitment in principle to give recognition.

The public would like to know the views of the two local Medical Schools on the island to determine if they have a problem with another Medical School being established on the Island and what would be their concerns if any.

This is one issue that needs to be ventilated thoroughly and I am calling on all stakeholders to convene a televised discussion on this matter between the good doctor and a representative of the government, the local medical board, and a lawyer with a background in International Law such as Dr. Riviere.

I am calling on Attorney David Bruney to share with the Public since he was the AG at the time when the other Medical School was established and what typically is contained in the MOU between the Government and the Medical School and the objections if any that is shared by Medical Schools that have enjoyed an almost monopolistic presence on the Island and the contribution towards GDP, foreign exchange reserves, and the risks of they pulling out from Dominica.

The UWP can tone down the emotion and rhetoric on this one and cease on this opportunity to demonstrate to all of Dominica their maturity in handling this issue. I am already congratulating the UWP here since the doctor in question was a Senator of the UWP in 2005 and later resigned to pursue other political interests. Persons may want to read between the lines and think that this is just another individual looking out for his personal interest and using the political arena to advance self. I however think this may not be the case.

        December 10, 2010

Stop being stupid. In one way or the other it will affect the public…So why does it have to be none of our business. So If I decided to build a strip club here, don’t you think the public has a right to know that venture.

The questions that I’m asking myself after reading this are:

When was this application made. Was it made before the PM announced that they planned to build a new hospital, but the location was undecided.

Why is Dr Ferraira unavailable to comment. Surely this matter is dear to him, so he should make time to set the records straight.

Why was this matter not one of the 8 questions asked the last time that parliament was in session.

Is it a hospital or medical centre (there is a difference) Have they purchased the land to build and how is it to be funded. If it is a private venture, then who are the backers. Private venture or not,
Mr John has now made it an open topic.

If Mr John’s info is correct, then why has the PM/his cabinet blocked it. Is it because they already have plans for the area or is it political.

Dr Ferraira should what Mr Brisbane did (made his letters public viewing), and make the application/refusal letters public viewing.

IF KELVER HAD ACCEPTED IT AND HECTOR WAS AGAINST FERREIRA–HE WOULD OPPOSE WHY DID KELVER GIVE PERMISSION TO HAVE A HEALTH FACILITY..

THERE ARE MANY OTHER WAYS TO CREATE EMPLOYMENT.. NO HEALTH FACILITY IS NEEDED DOWN THAT SIDE.ALL OF YOU WHO DISAGREE….YOU KNOW WHAT I’VE MADE MY POINT I COULD CARE LESS WHO AGREES AND WHO DISAGREES WITH MY POINT!!

With all its faults and borbols I love it. I am dying to return.

The thing about some of us is that we like to label people especially Dominicans when we live in America or France or England or Germany. Like we doing any better.

Well let me say this Ian.

I am JEALOUS of Dominicans living in Dominica. I think they are living a better quality of life, with a lot less stressors than I am. It is not the material things that make the life, it is the quality of things you do. I can get up on a Saturday and just go the the river, the lake, the sea, the waterfall the market. Can you do that where you are?

I live outside of Dominica and when I return I look at the faces of people I know and it appears they have not aged one bit.

But people like you curse the country when all you leave. I will never do that, even if UWP get into office in the future. The country has done more for me than I can ever repay.

        Ungrateful!

          December 9, 2010

I share your sentiment. I have been living abroad for 30 yrs, and many of us (successful or not) are just chasing unattainable dreams among the clouds…and even when we attain the dream, maintaining it requires huge financial and personal sacrifice. Whenever I land in Dominica and the sun hits my face, and my feet touch the ground, I am taken to another time and place where success is driven by the friends you made and the piece of sugarcane held tightly in your hand – not by the car you drive or how big your house is…

The truth is, many people living abroad are living hand-to-mouth – barely paying their rent. On the other hand, we have to be careful in DA, because we are getting absorbed in the American way of living, and many of us are hanging our hats where our hands can’t them. I an must always be true to itself…I love my Waitu.

    Hector

while I belive you may be trying to help the people of the west coast. I am of the strong impression that you are stiring up trouble with your false hopes and wild idealogies

You mention that a medical center will create jobs yes of course for the construction workers, electrician, capenters, masons etc etc., then when its is built how do you expect it to be run and by whom.

Nurses will be needed, doctors physicians, pediatricians, laws set up a governing body etc etc.

Easy to say but think before bringing points forward without any concrete justification

A medical center yes, specialised in what field of medecin

Are there trained men and women prepared to work in this specialised field of medecin

What types of diseases will be cured / what are the research method etc etc

How will this medical center be manned and supported

I mean please think before speaking BS. All you are doing is stiring up peoblems which is not necessary

Stop taking these poeple for idiots

Bring something substantial then and only then we will begin to respect you and the uwp party

When statements like this are made in the public you want to ask your self is this in the imagination of the
Opposition leader Hector John or is it true. I would like to challenge Mr John to show a copy of the proposal
sent to the Government outlining the Plans of such Medical Center and if it was rejected, I’m sure Dr. Ferreira would have received a letter from the Government giving reasons for the rejection, so why would he be asking the Government to answer such question when he could get the letter form Dr Ferreira giving the Government reasons for the rejection.

A proposal or request from Dr. Ferrera to the Government to build such a facility was not done over the Phone something like this would have to be put in writing and if it was rejected there must be a letter from Government outlining the reasons. I’m glad to hear that DNO is following up on the story. If this is a lie then that shows the credibility of Mr Hector John and his Party.

Hon John are you saying that Dominica should just give license to all and sundry to open Medical Schools. Are you prepared to place Ross University in jeorpardy. Are you not concerned for the people of Portsmouth who have invested Millions?

Dont you believe Ross University would be very much concerned if this were to happen and can threaten to pull out?

This is a very delicate matter which should be handled with great care.

Interesting… curious as to whether he was going to build a hospital, medical school or a heath centre.

And if so, what is the real reason behind the decision not too.

I am starting to hate the fact that the UWP always drop these bombs..without providing reasons or truths to back them…. Tell the people the alleged reasons for the decision not to move ahead.

A stupid reason is still a reason and if these allegations are true…they need to be backed up!

On can be accused but not convicted without strong enough facts, therefore I would like to know the reasons for teh refusal before I cast judgment.
