Pit latrine eradication program gets thumbs up from Graneau

Graneau said the program will empower people across the island
Graneau said the program will benefit people across the island

Minister for Carib Affairs and Parliamentary Representative for the Salybia Constituency, Ashton Graneau, is giving full support to a government initiative to eradicate pit toilets in Dominica describing it as “greatest ideas that ever came across over the last decade”.

Graneau is of the opinion that the initiative will empower not only people in his constituency but all Dominicans who will benefit from it.

He revealed that 15 people from the Salybia constituency have already been identified for the construction of washroom facilities.

“That of course will replace the old pit latrines,” he said, according to a release from the office of the prime minister. “I myself grew up as a boy using pit but I know it can be very embarrassing sometimes, inconvenient many times and especially if it is raining and at nights, for example, if you have to get out to use the washroom, you know how troublesome that can be if you have a diarrhoea and you have to be rushing out in the night or even in the day.”

He pointed out that recently the United Nations declared an entire program for the eradication of pit latrines around the globe “and I think when we heard that, then we realized that we were at fault because the PM had been saying that for some time and we were not looking at it very seriously.”

In October 2013, prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit called for what he described as a “war on pit latrines.”

The program falls under the government’s Home Renovation and Sanitation Program.

A total of $5-million was budgeted for the program for the fiscal year 2013/2014.

The elders receiving the toilets will no doubt say a silent prayer in thanks and gratitude for the effort of Mr. Graneau. Wheras, Claudius Sanford has been toiling to be Parl. Rep. for a decade (ten years) can he even point to a group formed or a project or program initiated, can he not do something to show his interest in the development of the Kalinago people and stop crying to be Parl. Rep.?. When the bells are rung, Kalinago Territory will be redder than red.

No wonder things are so “messy”. Also do not forget to eradicate doing #2, in the rivers, the sea, and the bushes. We have a lot of work to do. I am beyond words. Heaven help us all.

I hope you ALL know that it is NOT Roosevelt’s place to put INDOOR PLUMBING in your homes. We ALL grew up with pit latrines, and some of us used the bush or wherever was available to let it down.

I would think that to every NEW home built over the years SHOULD have facilities for their comfort. Those who are renovating their homes should include INDOOR PLUMBING.

WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? WHATEVER MONIES DONATED/CONTRIBUTED FOR ASSISTANCE IS NOT TO PROVIDE INDOOR PLUMBING FOR EVERYONE. Hopefully, a number of DESERVING residents will benefit from the program; HOWEVER, THE REST OF YOU NEED TO FIND YOUR OWN WAY TO INCLUDE YOUR INDOOR PLUMBING. LITTLE BY LITTLE THE BIRD BUILDS ITS NEST.

ROOSEVELT’S JOB IS TO ENSURE THE CITIZENS ARE HEALTHY, BUT HE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR “YOU” MAINTAINING THAT “HEALTH”.

THIS IS 2014, THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE SHOULD ALREADY HAVE INDOOR PLUMBING IN THEIR HOMES.

NO, I DO NOT HAVE A HOUSE IN DOMINICA. IF I DID, YOU BETTER BELIEVE I WOULD HAVE INDOOR PLUMBING.

STOP ASKING YOUR FAMILIES FOR THE THINGS YOU DO NOT NEED AND ASK FOR THE THINGS THAT YOU DO NEED.

STOP ASKING ROOSEVELT TO BE YOUR “FATHER” “SON” AND “REDEEMER.” LEARN TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELVES.

By-the-way, Roosevelt DID NOT take away your livelihood, YOU did that YOURSELVES. YOU thought YOU did NOT have to WORK ANYMORE because YOUR SON is all grown up you no longer have to SUPPORT him, it is his turn to SUPPORT YOU.

YOU HAVE THE WRONG SON. ROOSEVELT HAS “TWO SONS” AND YOU ARE NOT ONE OF THEM. HIS RESPONSIBILITY IS TO RUN BUSINESS AS HE SEE FIT, NOT YOUR HOMES.

“Hopefully, a number of DESERVING residents will benefit from the program;”

Mr./Miss, Observer, when you say “a number of deserving residence will benefit from the program” what do mean; what are you implying? Who are the deserving; and what qualifies one as an deserving?

Everybody on the Carib Reservation is poor, if there are only eight (800) homes in the area, we are sure that more than 90% of the homes are without running water, and flush toilet, so that means of the eight hundred homes seven hundred-twenty (720) homes does not have running water, and flush toilets, leaving maybe eighty (80) homes with running water, and flush toilets.

So, how do you arrive, or how do you select eight deserving residence from seven hundred-twenty families?

What is the criteria which makes one person more deserving than the other in such a small place; so,you see it is all going to boil down to politics, and their political crones?

In your words I assume you mean the eight closest to the so called minister, most probably his family and friends, those who’s color of red are the brightest. I challenge you to count of the eight who will be selected how many of them are labor party supporters, how many are UWP supporters, and how many are DF, and how many of the recipients are none affiliated, or nonpartisan

If in fact we are talking about a small population, of less than two thousand people, and this politician, and his party wish to help the community, I do not believe it is that difficult for the government to donate the toilets, septic tanks and all to all the people of the village, thus there would be no favoritism, and discrimination involved in the process.

Yes that comes with modernization and I too had a pit latrine not so long ago. However there are other issues that go alongside setting up soakaway and sewage especially on hillside like in the territory. A few years ago I heard an Indian parlimentarian advocating the use of pit toilet because of water water scarcity in India.

“Ashton Graneau, is giving full support to a government initiative to eradicate pit toilets in Dominica describing it as “greatest ideas that ever came across over the last decade”.(Ashton Graneau)

Ashton, yours is the stupidest comment any so called politician could have made! You should be ashamed of such nonsensical comments. You people politicize everything, you are glorying, in the decent, and most logical method of the disposal of excretion, and feces!

If you are impressing our nation, and the world that the “greatest ideas that ever came across over the decade,” you are confirming that you and your government, the present government is absolutely an total waste of time; and have not accomplished much over the years you people are at the apex of Dominica.

Mind you Ashton, a decade is “ten long years,” so if the best idea to surface in the mind of the government, you and all the rest in your political party, and those of you who live high on the hog at the expense of the people claiming to head ministries is an indication, that you people are all bankrupt of political ideas, and that is why there is no progress in the country.

Government should not have to go out and select their party crones to give them flush toilet, and showers, because that is something everybody should realize is a necessity required to maintain proper sanitation in the environment in which they resides.

In any event the implementation of flush toilet brings along a host of septic tanks, and soak-away in the backyard of people; they do get overwhelm, spilling both feces and contaminated water, that will be running all over the place, and the stench will be unbearable. If the government intent is to introduce the people to a different way of life; perhaps it would be in the interest to do it the correct way in the first place.

When you advise people to eliminate the pit hole, the government should begin the construction of a sewer system throughout the nation, that would eliminate the stench which these septic tanks will cause over the years to come. If you said the development of a nation wide sewer system is the best idea to have come in the our nation history that would have made more sense than the rubbish you have spoken!

Dominicans are tired of this backwardness, that is why many people have taken the initiative to install flush toilets in their home, no matter how small, even if the residence is a 16 X 12; yours truly have helped two people in my village to accomplish that, so do not credit your government with this idea. Dominicans are ambitious, they desire improvement, however, the government is the obstacle in that the government does not have a clue of what to do in order to get money circulating in the country, thus creating employment for the people, which will eliminate the dependency on government for everything.

Bury such stupid comments Graneau, people do not want to hear that!

Fellow Dominicans, listen very attentively to what Mr. Graneau, Mr. Skerrit and the DLP is advocating in 2014: “He pointed out that recently the United Nations declared an entire program for the eradication of pit latrines around the globe “and I think when we heard that, then we realized that we were at fault because the PM had been saying that for some time and we were not looking at it very seriously.”
Guys notice, it had to take the UN to preach eradication of pit toilet for the DLP to realize they were at fault. Didn’t they know that before? So the PM had been saying that for some time but they never took it seriously. How laughable!
Well Mr. Graneau, like yourself, I grew up with pit latrine and I did not have to have to wait on the UN to tell me it was embarrassing. But the problem was, things were very bad with us in the 50’s as my parents had 14 of us sharked together. But the moment we got financially better (by this I mean we were able to help our parents plant fig, dasheen, plantain etc), they were able to modernize their house and put flushing toilet. By the time we grew up and became adults, we all built our own house with everyone putting flushing toilet. We did not have to wait on the UN to preach it, we did not have to wait on Skerrit to identify our need to build one for us. You see, the number one job of any democratic government, is to look for means to create employment for its people. As long as the people are employed they will take care of basic needs. However, a non democratic government look for ways to take employment from the people so the people will have to depend on them to build toilet, give them soap, toilet paper etc. That’s exactly what Skerrit has done to Dominica and no wonder, the first think they killed was agriculture where the majority of us earned a living. COMMUNISM THAT!!!

    February 7, 2014

Mr. Graneau, your statement is saying two things to us and they are two more reasons why your DLP team is expired pills in the cabinet:

    1. It is saying that you, Skerrit, and the DLP failed to improve the quality of life in the Kalinago Territory, and in Dominica on a whole after 14 years or a decade and half.

    2. Sir, your statement also exposes the failure of the hand out program which you, Skerrit and the DLP have introduced to some Dominicans. Again, here is what you said: “I myself grew up as a boy using pit…” Did Skerrit build bathroom for you so he could mapweesay you later? Didn’t you put flushing toilet when things got better with you? Why not help things get better for others so they too could help themselves? Graneau, there is not one person in the Salybia Constituency or in the whole of Dominica that would not prefer to have flushing toilet over the pit toilet. But the question is, can they afford it? I bet you if their financial conditions improve, you and Skerrit will not have to identify 15 people fro a constituency you all have been representing for 14 yrs to build bathrooms for. YOUR CABINET HAS FAILED!!!

  37. expired cabinet pill
    February 7, 2014

Will someone from the DLP cabinet stop Mr. Graneau from talking that foolishness which clearly exposes his government? Is anyone out there listening to him? How could Skerrit, Ambrose and GIS staff listen to this trash talk from one of their cabinet ministers and they not stopping him? Is it that they ALL agree with him? If that is the case, alas for Dominica!

Mr. Graneau, let me make sure I quote you verbatim here: Minister for Carib Affairs and Parliamentary Representative for the Salybia Constituency, Ashton Graneau, is giving full support to a government initiative to eradicate pit toilets in Dominica describing it as “greatest ideas that ever came across over the last decade”.
Mr. Graneau, do you and the DLP know how many years make a decade? FYI a decade is 10 yrs. Now Sir, if eradicating pit toilet is the greatest idea that ever came across from YOR GOVERNMENT in almost 1.5 decades, then you have confirmed why we should get rid of you and your entire team from the cabinet because you just confirmed how bankrupt of ideas you all are and why Dominica is so screwed up.
DLP supporters, I did not make that statement. It was your own minister that said it and I am quite sure it was heard by those big boys of the DLP and they all agreed with him since no one has disassociated themselves from these erratic statements.
