Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has ordered a full investigation into allegations of assassination against former Prime Minister Edison James, who told party supporters at a public meeting earlier this week of plans to kill him.
The prime minister told the Next Level programme on Kairi FM this week that the matter is very serious. He said the minister of national security has already advised the police to get in touch with James and have police deal with the matter.
“If one comes out to say that there are allegations of assassination against him, I am hoping the chief of police takes that very seriously. If Mr. James is merely throwing this out as political jokes, he needs to be very careful. I do not know who in Dominica may want to assassinate Mr. James. He may be aware of people out of Dominica who may want to do that…” he said.
Prime Minister Skerrit said government is also willing to make available officers to be stationed at James’ residence to protect him.
“If the police recognize that there are serious concerns about Mr. James’ safety, they should offer the state’s services to him and make police available to him 24-7. That instruction is coming from me. Police should be available to him until he feels comfortable that he can walk the streets of Marigot,” he said.

Notwithstanding I wish tio make a fe comments:
1. If a former Prime Minister thinks threats to his safety have been made he should go to the authorities. If Mr James went public with this before going to the police I would treat it with some skepticism.
2. The Prime Minister is doing the right thing to offer protection, to Mr James, although I am sure Mr James’ proven and documented paranoia (remember bugging allegations?) would make him think of foxes guarding the hen-house.
3. Still I don’t think we should have this so-what attitude. We are talking about murder here folks. Once this scourge is unleashed there is no stopping.
4. I wonder too about the Prime Minister suggesting that Mr James might need to fear being assassinated by forces coming from outside Dominica.
I don’t want to judge the man’s motives but that is a scary statement considering that all the allegations of corruption, wheeling and dealing against Skerrit involve persons, governments and organizations outside Dominica.

Reading some of the comments, it appears that some thinks that this is all a waste of police time and tax payers money. I personally dont think so. Reasons being that if nothing was done and something did happen then the public outcry would be deafening. Then again if the investigation showed that Mr James fabricated it all, then I believe he should be made to pay all expenses incurred.

On a Matt Peltier programme he was so casual and synical of the Police when he was asked why he did not go to the Chief of Polcie with the information that he had received. The man who said that he received information that there was an individual who said that, “If the price was right he would be willing to take him out.” This does not qualify as a threat in law but it does qualify as Conspiring to commit Murder if it can be proven as fact. Anyone reading this message from the PM whether supporter or not have little choice put to admire either publicly or privately this recent move. I believe that anything in life has protocol and though many of us don’t follow it, I hope Mr. James spoke first with government about the treat before he disclose the information in public. Although, he did not say directly whether the plot was political one have to assume given his profession that is the thinking. Nonetheless, ALL the courtesy being offered by the PM is the right thing to do and let the law and public decide. I don’t support any party at this time for the reason that Dominica is so polarized, it is quickly becoming a landmine. Everytime i hear people speak of the bugging allegations as being false it pains my heart because there are police officers who know very well that it was true. Based on Edison James’ reputation I somewhat reluctant to give credibility to the assassination threat However I applaud the PM’s intension as this is the right thing to do. I did not hear Mr. Skerrit offering police protection or looking at this matter with any seriousness. Is it that Mr. Emmanuels’s life is not important? Can someone explain?
Police protection should be offered to all senior citizens being robbed and attacked. Police protection should be offered to all the people who risk their lives going to work late or coming from work late at night.
I also need police protection because I live in and isolated area and I am afriad for my life. Will Mr. Skerrit grant that to me too?.
