On the heels of its return from a tour of several US cities Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, is questioning the motives of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP).
The party met with its supporters at a rally on Friday night and reported on the just completed tour stating that their next stop will be Europe.
Speaking on Kairi FM’s, The Next Level program, last weekend Skerrit said as a foreign minister and lead negotiator for the country, he has been criticized for his travels overseas. However, the UWP is touring multiple cities in the US and is yet to produce results.
He added that the UWP leader, Lennox Linton, has no track record of any foreign policy initiative in Dominica far less anywhere else.
“These guys are not even in government but they are travelling like this already,” he said. “These men say they are establishing links, links … what links can you Linton, who has never articulated any foreign policy initiative, none … none whatsoever.”
The Prime Minister added further, “you think you can curse Chavez, and curse Venezuela and curse Alba and Petro Caribe and then come back and say well look here am I. That’s not how it works, it’s a conversation, it’s a good relationship. It is trust, it is sincerity, it is no different than a relationship between two people.”
The UWP had explained that the reason for the recent trip was to seek to engage the resources, talents and skills of Dominican around the world for a better Dominica.
It said it also sought to bring the vision of a better Dominica to Dominicans living abroad.
Someone needs to help the PM get something to Meaningful to talk about. A debate will be really good Between The Pm and Lennox ….

I don’t expect Skeritt to compliment Mr. Lennox Linton on the excellent job he has done since taking the leadership of the United Workers Party. Skeritt’s criticism of Mr. Linton, as he puts it, for not being able to articulate any Foreign Policy initiative, is downright misleading. If Skeritt, as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Policy does not know that it is only the Government in Office that can create Foreign Policies then he should resign. I can sympathize with Skeritt for the disastrous job in terms of the handling of the economy or disbursement of the country’s fund to organizations eg. the Red Clinic. He was a School Teacher and knew nothing about the handling of finances. As regards to the post of Foreign Policy, anyone who possesses high standards of ethics, honesty and morality should be able to manage the Foreign Policies of any country like Dominica.
Am no party lover but really what is really the point of this travel? really? What exactly are they really trying to solve by touring the US. Because really and truely are they trying to get the talents of the DA people abroad, for them to come home, I really do not get it. This is the third time in many tries that I have made a comment, and first I will get a message stating that my comment is awaiting MODERATION. And after waiting 3 sometimes 4 days the comment disappeares. The last time that this happened I was asked by Admin. to repost which I did and the comment was never posted. Last week one of your bloggers made a comment where the words Plethora and Plaucity were used. Another one stated that they had never seen these words and wondered if they were English words. I simply ask the guy to check the dictionary because yes the words were English words. I copied the words from a dictionary and placed the meaning of the words. And to date I can’t find my comment. Do not count on that. Do you know what happened in Grenada? The Government before won with how many seats. At the last elections that was called, the government then did not win one seat. The opposition won all the seats in parliament; not one seat was won by the government then. So, don’t fool yourself. Dominicans are in misery. In order to formulate and articulate foreign policy, policy makers have to know what foreign policy is. Countries formulate foreign policy to safeguard their own national interests. By his own announcements and pronouncements, the Dear Leader has already proven himself to be an enemy of the Constitution and by extension an enemy of our national interests when he allegedly declared publicly that no law or constitution can keep him back.
After more than 9 years in office our foreign policy is still very difficult to define and articulate and may have switched from national interests to personal interest without any ethics or values. The appointment of Honorary Representatives is a case study in incoherence.

They want more tourists to visit but will not what needs to be done to build a bigger airport or extend the current one airport (Melville hall). Just by doing that the country becomes very attractive to more tourists, more businesses (companies that might want to setup shop)…. Not everyone wants to ship thinks by boat. It’s interesting that of all the countries Skerrit has visited in the past several months, the only one he can truly highlight is Venezuela. Why Venezuela? Because Skerrit’s socio-economic and development strategy is patterned on the Venezuelan model which, of course, is a dismal and pathetic failure. Venezuela in spite of its oil is now a fail state and Dominica is not too far from becoming one. ALBA is heading for the garbage dump of history and some of Venezuela’s closest allies in Latin America are leaving ALBA like rats running from a sinking ship. More so, Skerrit is using his once personal, surreptitious and distorted relationship with Chavez as the accepted way to conduct international relations. Somebody in the Labour party must do Skerrit a favor and be honest and upfront with him and tell him that he was never and will never be Prime Minister material. Skerrit just does not have it!! You cannot give what you do not have. He initially got to where he is purely by default. The Labour party at the time and still is, bankrupt of talent, creativity, dynamism and foresight. Not even Tonny Astaphan initially was in favor of making Skerrit leader of the Labour party, after the death of Pierre Charles – Tonny’s man for the job was Reginald Austrie. I really cant understand why the Prime Minister is stoking small talk and questioning the UWP`s trip. He needs to focus on what the Labour party needs to do in order to get the country going in the right direction. This seems like a man who is desperate and looking for every reason to deflect the truth about state of Dominica.
I was born into the Labour family and my Dad was a minister in this party but its all about the people for me and not what I was born into. There needs to be a change in this country’s` way of politics and leadership.
I am not a UWP supporter either, I am a Dominican who loves my country and is very concerned about the status Quo. I now reside in London and I am definitely looking forward to receiving and hopefully hearing what the UWP has to say and what their plans are for the economy. I know that they definitely have one good man on board, Julius Francis who taught me Geography at school and who conversed with my dad and no doubt learnt from him.
So I say I definitely don’t see eye to eye with Labour but I am willing to listen to what UWP have to say. There are so many ways one can interpret this.

I do not think UWP has supporters in Canada especially Toronto. This is why they did not visit here. I do not think Dominicans/Canadians, at least most of them, would be enthused with them. UWP must aspire to be more positive and goal should be to be the best position political party that Dominica have ever seen – but I don’t have faith in them. Perhaps a new political party is inevitable and will certainly give UWP a great challenge as the next opposition party in Dominica because from all indications DLP will win the next general election. Let’s forget about UWP and form another viable political party in our homeland. Keep out the disgruntled former DLP supporters turned UWP candidates from being candidates in the new political party for Dominica. Now, bring on the negative and insulting comments shall we and let us see where that will take us?

Despite the fact that Linton is clueless in many levels of law, business, and economics etc. he has continued to plague the air waves with propaganda and has entice a listening audience. In this millennium most politicians are well educated, they might not be eloquent, but most have some form of higher education. Leaders are suppose to be inspiring – for example the Barbados PM keep reassuring the people that Barbados will get over the hump. Keeping the people motivated, hopeful and ambitious should be a huge part of a leader’s MO. How many Dominicans home and in the diaspora can say that our PM is very motivating and that it is the words of our leader that has prompt investments and relocation interest in Dominica. It is an honest question that the honest and sincere mind should answer.
I have never heard the PM say to the people that we will get over this miserably performing economy.
At least Lennox Linton is preaching hope and whether his message may or may not be another political pep talk at least Dominicans here and in the diaspora are getting excited about the possibility of a brighter future.
Instead of spending countless hours looking for rainfall in the UWP sunshine why not focus on trying to motivate Dominicans particularly the people whose only aspiration now is to be at the bottom of the financial center on Wednesday morning or to get a ride or even walk to Vielle Case on a Thursday morning hoping to get something to feed their family for a day or two.
Now how many of us can honestly sy that Tony Astaphan or Lennox Lawrence has motivated us – ” The motive of powerful people is to remain powerful” So Tony and Lennox is more than happy to keep the people of Dominica on the path that they have designed for the people- why allow the people to change path in the wilderness of demotivation, they may just find a way to see the rising sun. I was talking to a friend just 2 weeks ago about what I would do for the farmers if I was in charge of DEXIA, and while looking at used commercial refrigerated vessels for sale or lease, I came across a boat that was in dry dock in Venezuela that had a complete refrigerated hold, capable of transporting two 20′ containers on deck, selling for a little under USD $700,000.00. Stoney, that’s the perfect vessel to bring the farmers produce to the neighboring islands. I don’t know why these people in position in DA seem unwilling to help the farmers out! Dominica supposed to be the breadbasket of the eastern Caribbean; why aren’t we!!

Why it is that the PM is not engaging in discussion regarding a productive Dominica. PM stop being child like and acting like a spoil child with ” affluenza” or is it that your “affluenza” has not overwhelmed you.
I would like to ask Skerrit a few questions:
(i) Did you Mr. PM had foreign policy when you first enter office in 2000: Wasn’t it due to your involvement in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that he gain knowledge and experience in Foreign policies…so, why do you want Lennox to have foreign policy initiative out of government?
Skerrit, you have to remember you were a teacher, when you ran for office and your teaching background was not international relations, but English. So, you couldn’t have gained enough knowledge in foreign policy initiative prior to taking up office in 2000?
(i) Whose money do you use when you travel? Isn’t it tax payers money? So why tax payers don’t know where you are going and when you are coming back? You never report the dealings of your travel to the public. That’s the number one criticize of your traveling…It’s total disrespect of a leader not to inform his people about his travel; every transparent leader does.
Lennox et al. are traveling on their own funds…not tax payers money and hence doesn’t have to report to the nation, but they did..showing that there are willing to be more transparent that you if they form the government; and that’s attracts me.
(iii) Skerrit, I wonder if sometimes, you just speak without thinking, making you appear foolish. Isn’t it an established fact that Governments make deals, enter into negotiations, give aid and establish relations with governments…not individuals or members of the opposition, so you have a better chance of attracting aid from Venezuela, etc than Lennox, et al, who is still in opposition. So, why criticize their inability to bring results to make a political statement.

The Prime Minister was elected to office by the people and he should have no secrets when doing the country’s work. He has a responsible to let the people know where he is and what his mission is as a servant of the people. Any Dominican has a right and a responsibility to question him.
Mr. Linton has not been elected, is not answerable to the people of Dominica and can travel where he wants to. If Dominicans decide to put him in office then he will be under the microscope as a Prime Minister should be.
Having said this, it is interesting to note that Mr. Linton’s approach is much more diplomatic and respectable than that of the Prime Minister. He said where he was going, the meetings were open and we heard what was going on, and then he came back and reported on what had transpired.
I think the Prime Minister needs to distance himself from that show on Kairi. It is not doing him good. He’s sounding stupid and petty- real ridiculous for a man who is leading a country.
