PM Skerrit says his government delivers

PM Skerrit delivering his independence day address

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has declared that his government is one that delivers despite challenging economic times and “now is not the time to change course.”

Delivering his independence day address at the National Day Parade on Sunday, Skerrit said there are economic hardships all over the world but his administration is working and the evidence is there for all to see.

“Fellow Dominicans, ladies and gentlemen, there are economic hardships the world over, there are social challenges across every continent but your government is working and your government is delivering,” he told a packed Windsor Park Stadium. “You can see evidence of our numerous achievements all around you, you have heard of the number of initiatives for further development and advancement of our country…”

According to the prime minister now is not the time to listen to ‘false prophets’ with ‘unrealistic promises.’ “Now is not the time to change course; now is not the time to listen to false prophets making unrealistic promises; let us continue to work together on the path of progress that we have charted,” he stated.

The prime minister is projecting 1.6 percent GDP for 2013 which he pointed out is not going to be easy because of the global environment, “but we have stayed the course and we have ensured that the platform for reducing poverty remains in intact.”

He stated that in order to reap the benefits of the government initiatives, every Dominican must “commit to the mission of pursuing excellence in our approach to work and the conduct of our lives.”

“Very importantly we must promote the positives about Dominica,” the prime minister said. “We must work to build and not tear down this country, we need Dominicans at home and abroad to get into the business of promoting Dominica and all that it offers. We need to wrap our utterances in the flag, we need to say and do what helps to build the image of our country.”

Skerrit said he is concerned about some attitudes and behaviors in the Dominican society and hard work and productivity must be encouraged. “We must build a spirit of national pride. Let us make a 35th birthday pledge of building a nation and an environment of peace, let us move forward together with one mission advancing the growth and development for the benefit of all of us here in this country,” he noted.

The prime minister described the event as the ‘largest and the most colorful’ he had even seen. “It is always a pleasure for me to see you gather in such large numbers to witness our disciplined forces on parade, to celebrate the achievements of our country…” he noted. “I salute all on parade here this afternoon. Independence Day Parade 2013 will go down in history as among the most vibrant …it is a source of great hope for our nation when babies, children, young people, adults and elderly, male and female can all embrace our culture and nationhood through active participation in our independence celebrations.”

He said those gathered to witness the parade tells him that “you have distinguished right from wrong, sense from nonsense, responsibility from immaturity, love for country over love for a political party.”

“The presence of all of you here is a clear demonstration that on third November you have made the time to salute our beloved country,” he said. “It is a true spirit of unity and brotherhood…”

  5. Who's your dog?
    November 5, 2013

Hey, stop for a while!!! Does anyone else see what is going on here? I am feeling like there is a rope snaking through Dominica and on one side are people clothed in blue and the other side in red. I ask myself, hold on what dog do I have in either race? Are these individuals packaging their message differently and when you open the package; “surprise! Surprise!” It’s the same old thing of prostituting the electorate to believe all along they have your backs, but at the end it’s the same shit with a different stink. We do not need trinkets to vote anyone, and as a people we need to rebrand the way politicians see us. We need to begin to really be more independent not in the word, but in our actions. I have been privilege to live both in and out of Dominica and know we cannot solve all our problems in a short space of time because we need to deprogram so many people from the notion they’ve had for years set by the very people in our society who proclaim to want a better life for them. I see this situation as a battered woman syndrome where the women seem to think she cannot make it without the man. As a man I am here to debunk this myth on both fronts. The sad fact is that we are becoming an insensitive people and care less for our fellowmen/women. I say this because despite anyone being able to be buried with all the things they are hoard daily, we boast of our friendliness and love to attract the tourist dollar, yet we seldom show the love to our people. This is evident in our society because we are so intolerant of people with differing views on either side of the political spectrum.; yet when we migrate to the United States and hear the vastly differing views and the open criticism of it’s president and unless a threat is made no harm personally or economically (job lost) comes to that person. We are coming to the end of the year and my hope is that we can become a more mature democracy and I know that we have the people to lead us in that direction. I mean in Jamaica two opposing politicians was brought together, no matter how brief by Bob Marley; who do we have in Dominica to bring the country leaders together like that in a show of unity? Can anyone venture to suggest a person? I am really not sure, but am sensing the people of Dominica can do it because they are in the majority. In summary, I hope this writing evokes something different in our people to ask themselves the following: What dog do I really have in this race? Am I part of a person great plan of enrichment and, therefore I am the pillar their prosperity stands on? Well, if that is your conclusion, whose shoulders are you standing on to build your wealth?

    • November 5, 2013

You made your point clearly and your question was really relevant. I hope the people in Dominica take time and reflect on what you say .
For one thing though, your paragraph was too long. Could have been broken into 2 or 3 paragraphs as it was straining for the eyes to read. Being too long also makes it a bit boring to read especially if it is in one paragraph.
No insult meant, just an advice. Meant no harm or hatred.

  8. Take Warning!!!
    November 5, 2013

Fellow Dominicans, do not allow Mr. Skerrit to fool you, disappoint you and crush you again. If you think he is a man of his word just ask some young beautiful lady friends he promised to….At the end of the day, before sun rose that early beautiful morming, he had a secret thing going on at the Borne Catholic Church, which left many shocked, disappointed, and crushed. I can see that thing coming to Dominica again but please do not allow him to destroy the country before he does it. Think of this my friends, as Prime Minister, we believe he filed for French citizenship. If that was not enough to convince you of his plans, he went all the way to Canada to get a Canadian citizen as wife. Just in case you are still too blind and naïve to see, little baby was recently given birth to in the US. So while he continues to implement failed policies and hijack the good DLP platform, he is fortifying his future around France, Canada, and the USA. If you all do not want to take warning you will feel it! Too late will be the cry but it will be too late.

PM Skerrit’s words and his actions vex with each other. In fact so much they don’t agree they even fighting. I don’t judge people by what they say but by their actions. I don’t like to listen to a sermon I like to see a sermon because anybody can preach a sermon but their lifestyle is far from what they preach. The old saying says, “Show me a thief and I will show you a liar.” By the way DNO I am not trying to call anyone thief ok.
When you look at what the PM is saying and what he is doing you will realize there is a great gulf between.
“Fellow Dominicans, ladies and gentlemen, there are economic hardships the world over, there are social challenges across every continent but your government is working and your government is delivering…”
No one doubts the hardships around the world. But what I question is, How is it that during that same hardship Mr Skerrit, certain government ministers, some of his friends that were all known to be poor became so rich while the country at large has been drowned into poverty? Is he living in a different planet?
Folks what has the DLP delivered? My fellow Dominicans, when Mr. Skerrit became the PM he inherited a strong agricultural industry. Under his watch that died and a very high percentage of farmers who were forced out of business were made patients of his RED Clinic. He met tourism ready to fly. Under his watch, his failed policies forced “Carnival” which was the largest see transportation we had, to disappear. Furthermore, Mr. Skerrit met American Eagle swinging. Under his watch they disappeared and was replaced by a much smaller connecting kite. While we cannot blame Skerrit for causing AA to leave, we sure MUST blame him for not putting us in a position like St Vincent did when they built an international airport which by the way is carded to open later this year. In your face Skerrit!

    November 5, 2013

    Dominicans need to get real:
Any speech any PM gives at Independence WILL be ‘POLITICAL’
We need to accept Democracy . . accept the will of the Majority, if we truly love our country over our Party.
We much realize that less negative talk(crying) and more WORK is what will move an individual, his family, his community and Dominica forward.
This attitude has worked very, very well for me.
And seems to work for the Haitians.
Wouldn’t it be great for our development, if most Dominicans had this attitude towards politics and Work.
Political Parties should be less important to you than Political representatives.
Patriotism CHECK: if Would you vote for a “broomstick” instead of a positive representative, simply because the broomstick represents your ‘Party’?
Then you are not a true patriot,
    You are just a “Broomstick

Truly Mr Prime Mninister, your government has delivered. We proudly boast of improved infrastructure and proper care of the elderly in our country and an improvement in patriotism small as it may be. In light of these deliveries we Dominicans say thank you.

However, I am not thankful for the poverty mentality and culture you have cultivated and delivered over the years. You have successfully cause many Dominicans to become dependent on the government for their day to day sustainance under the cover of needed assistance. this political ploy works directly against your call for productivity. If this continues we are heading to a point where majority of the country will become ghetto. I really believe that you love your country but I think a love of power and foolish pride is creeping over you. Be careful my friend,it is better to lose an election and keep your integrity. Better to lose your position and gain your soul salvation. “what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Somebody please explain to me why is the PM giving a campaign speech on Independence day. If that is allowed the opposition should be allowed to give a rebutal speech on national radio. The PM is a case by himself. It is unfair to use this occasion for political talk withouth the public hearing from the opposition. That my people is wrong.
we are celebrating 35 years of independence not 13. What should be highlighted is how far we have come, those who have sacrificed and serve the country before, now and will in the future. PM continues to show a lack of respect for the citizens of dominica and we accept it.
Note the US Secretary of State sent independence wishes to the people of dominica and not the labour party or government.

His letter was about unity and he should have continued along that line. Dominica is way too segregated because of politics. Politicians need to put dcans first. At least for independence. “According to the prime minister now is not the time to listen to ‘false prophets’ with ‘unrealistic promises.’ “Now is not the time to change course; now is not the time to listen to false prophets making unrealistic promises.”

As a young Christian, I remember Evangelist Peter Augustine defines a false prophet to us as a person who makes predictions but their predictions never come to pass. This similar definition was taught by the then pastor Petter Saint Jean. So based on what both men preached which I believe is a true definition and the statement made by “All of a sudden preacher” Roosevelt Skerrit, let us see who is a false prophet based on promises and predictions made:

    Promise made:
    1.Gov’t promises 300 new jobs
Dominica News Online – Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 at 1:31 PM “He (Prime Minister Skerrit) is out of state and I can give you some good news, that he will be coming back with about 300 brand new jobs whenever he arrives in Dominica,” he said. Today id Nov. 4th. Where are the jobs?

    Promise #2:
PM Skerrit promises 500 new jobs
Dominica News Online – Tuesday, September 17th, 2013 at 10:25 AM “Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has hinted that by the end of September that at least 500 young people will be offered employment opportunities.” Today is Nov. 4 2013. Where are the jobs sir?

PM Skerrit hints at 400 new jobs

He made the disclosure at an award ceremony at the St. Matthew’s Hall in St. Joseph on Thursday evening. Where are the jobs sir?

Lang Mama believe in freedom of speech and Lang Mama is also very much aware that the truth offends.
Year after year time after time people listen to the same speech , the same promises they go home not even inspired and yet they come back totally blinded not even realizing that their lives have not changed ; many can’t pay the bills and put food on the table. In fact life in Dominica has become progressively worse year after year Now year after year those who are doing very well, sending their wives to make baby in America even when now the US is clamping down on this practice because people don’t pay the maternity bills. There are those building houses cash, those buying houses in cash, building mansions, acquiring three houses, SUV’s etc. boy what a great injustice and travesty.
How would one describe a people so blind and timid not to recognize the blatant lies and misgivings – sheep on a long walk to a slaughter house. So sad that the people really believe that the mass poverty is due to the economic recession of 2008.

Happy 35th Independence to all Dominicans at home and abroad, may it be a time of peace, joy and reflection on where we want our beloved country to be in the next 35 years and beyond.
Sad to see that our Prime Minister cannot ever be above” mapuis”.This was an occasion to be embracing of all Dominicans of all persuations and to look like he is offering an olive branch for unity as the country celebratres it’s birthday. But Mr.Skerritt just csn’t be above political campaigning. It will do him good to learn from distinguished leaders eg.President Obama who know that they are the leader of those who support them and vote for them as well as those who don’t support him. This is the nature of true democracy and only grownups can understand that.
Mr.Skerritt there will be enough time for campaigning.Shame on you.

J, boy. I may want to agree with some of the sentiments you expressed here. But perhaps like me you see and hear only what you want. Independence time is a time for all of us Dominicans. It is an occasion to rally our innermost seinsibilities of nationhood of belonging to the little country we call Dominica. All of us have that responsibility. Our leaders (present and aspiring)whether in government or not have that solemn responsibility too. Such is not the responsibilityonly of leaders. Aspiring leaders have a responsibility to show that they raedifferent to the people they want to replace in government. Having said that, I wonder J if you heard the partisan call for Dominicans to boycott the indpendence anniversary activities? Did you? They said only two ativities were targetted – that is after they ealized that Dominicans were not going to fall for their selfish motives. Did you condemn that move in the same way and media as you are now condemning Pm Skerrit? Let us be objective in our submissions. Oh, by the way I too beleive that there is a tiem and place for partisan politics. PM Skerrit should have avoided the comments he made. I did not have to come here to denounce the opposition’s call for a boycott. I did it whereit matters most – on the street corners.

There is no way on earth that, you can walk into the Princess Margaret Hospital with its broken cabinets and mold growth, and make this statement.
There is no way on earth that you can endure the marathon that is traveling to Dominica and make that statement.
Finally, high unemployment numbers on the island prevents you from making such a statement.
There has been improvements in some areas, but much work needs to be done at home.

It is difficult to reconcile the P.M.’s speech with reality. The Govt’s own figures, not from any outside agency or authority like the Worldbank, tell us that we saw a drop of 29.5% in investment to a measly E.C.$.34.9 million in 2012, compared with 2011. (Invest Dominica Authority’s annual report for 2012).This tells us, that we are not attracting investors as we should and no lofty speech is going to cure this.

Can someone please tell me what an independence speech is about. The PM does not have a clue what it is about.

Skerrit lacks the potential to provide jobs for this nation. Infrastructural is good and for 13 years , thats all we seeing but what about ‘people development’ have we become richer or poorer. Has the middle class increase or decrease? this will be a clear indication of success. Dominicans are poorer than 15 years ago. Labour Party is the worst party in the history of Dominica.

Prime minister, if I consider the length of time you and your administration have been in office, I have to say that you have delivered very little.
I’ll give you a small list of what you have NOT delivered to the people of Dominica:
    1) an explanation of your private wealth amassed during your time in office
    2) an insight into the MOU with China
    3) an account of the moneys received from selling passport
    4) an insight into the PetroCaribe agreement
    5) a statement of the PetroCaribe account
    6) a statement where the moneys handed out during the Red Clinic are coming from and who has benefited so far from it

Now, if you have nothing to hide, DELIVER! You just claimed your government delivers. Or did you tell us a lie again?

    2) As a government the youth skills program needs to be revamp to include a robust training in all the trades like (MEP- Electricity, Mechanical and Plumbing; Tiling, Plan reading, Technical skills like construction Inspection and Safety, Project Management and Planning)
    3) We need to train our people to audit construction cost to limit the amount of cost over-runs of projects; We need to train our people how to source construction materials and to check the product data of each materials for suitability in terms of there chemical and physical properties to name a few areas.

I wish to ask the Prime Minister, what has he delivered ,infrastructure, promises and no jobs. Every time Skeritt opens his mouth concerning the economic situation in Dominica, we hear the same rhetoric, the world is faced with economic problems, therefore Dominica is affected. Skeritt offers 1.6% GBP in 2013, Mr. Linton is offering Dominicans 6% GDP and 5000 jobs in three years. It has been almost a week since Mr. Linton made those projections, we have not heard of the impossibility of such a venture, neither has there been a counter projection, but instead we are hearing of 1.6% GDP and Global Environment. It is my opinion, the Skeritt Labour Administration is bankrupt of ideas as regards to the management of the country. Maybe it is time for Skeritt to place pride aside and for the benefit of Dominica request that Mr. Linton and his economic team put a plan in place to avoid the further deterioration of the economy.

Only cowards and weak people look to hang the blame on others. 5 years Skerrit keep blaming the economic recession doesn’t that mean that he just cannot do it.

You look scared to death, but the electorate will teach you a lesson soon. Don’t continue to blame your destruction of Dominica on World Economic Crisis Sir. Under your reign, we have had very very limited trading links with the rest of the world, since your regime has damaged and killed agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, offshore services and other growth engines of the country.
Your mention of unrealistic promises by others is obviously referring to the opposition. This suggests to me that you have not fully recovered from the “Job and Economic Forum” held this week by the opposition UWP. It offered a lot of hope to the youths of this country who are largely neglected by your regime. SHAME ON YOU AND YOUR LAZY AND BACKWARD MANAGEMENT OF WAITIKUBULI!

When they come into power soon their first order of duty is to repair the damages done by Skerrit and his gang. Then the begging syndrome has to be substituted with work. This one is going to be the most difficult task of the new government. I can tell you, Skerrit does not care about the people whom he was sworn to serve. A leader who cares about people and country cannot be cultivating beggars. This is the most damning feature of his reign as PM. It has only caused us to be the laughingstock of the Caribbean, as it has brought poverty upon many many many many indeed..

My comment? pure lies and lies upon lies. The speech writer was good; but not good enough to give skerritt another chance. What happen! Dominica belongs to him alone? or is he the only and best leader we have? Your time has come Mr. skerritt – That same line in all his speeches, “The economy is bad all over.” “The global economy is bad, but we have made it.” Lie he lying.

Your views? Not that of specifically the majority. You lack fairness. You are bent on debasing him at every turn. Nothing he states will ever please people as you.
My suggestion to you is, allow him as Prime Minister of Dominica to speak and to encourage all Dominicans, in love, peace, harmony and unity. There is no other way.

      • T
        November 3, 2013

@ Justice and truth You are bent at supporting him every evil thing he does. It speaks volumes about your satanic nature, and the reject that the people of dominica should give to your bloggs. My suggestion to you, wicked and satanic being, is to let the people expose lies, corruption and all other ills that are causing their country to plunge into despair. OK SUPPORTER OF EVIL!

this prime minister is crafty and misleading the masses….thank God a few dominicans can think and raise a flag up….

Lenox has to win a seat before he can begin to make noise. what he says now is irrelevant. Rather take what Mr. Hector John is saying.

By the way, his independence message should alert the Labour party to prepare a welcoming party for him, as he is about to cross the house. Go on Mr John, have the BALLS to be BOLD, and FAIR.

    Very Vague in my view…

wonder if those folks at the park can relate what he said to the report lurking around about dominica’s economy the massive decline etc…

don’t they know he is ruling the poorest island in the caribbean which is dominica..

he has the largest cabinet delivering zeros…

dominicans need to think deeper..they are not serious about governance levels and standards..

this prime minister is taking them for a ride and preying on there ignorance…

How about you? What have you done to make Dominica a better place? Better yet what has skerrit done to make Dominica a better place. Like you I don’t live in Dominica anymore because it is not a great livable place. PM says we should talk up DA, what I going to suggest going to DA where young girls are raped on the beach in front of their parents, tourists are stoned in the head for a robber to steal their stuff, Cannot even go to the best beaches alone because it is no longer a safe place to be.When is the last time you were in Dominica to live?
