His Excellency Michel Martelly
President Elect of Haiti
Palais National
Champ de Mars
Port-au-Prince
HAITI

Your Excellency

I write on this occasion to extend my congratulations and that of the Government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica on your resounding victory at the polls of the presidential elections of      March 20, 2011. The declared results gave you a convincing and welcomed mandate to provide new leadership to your people in these challenging times.

As a colleague Head of Government of CARICOM I also take this opportunity to welcome you to the leadership of the Caribbean Community where you will be able to work in collaboration with the other member states as we tackle the wider issues of the region.

Your Excellency, it is well known that the people of Haiti are currently facing one of the foremost challenges of their existence. The recovery efforts from the earthquake of January 2010 alone will run into several billions of dollars. These efforts are in addition to the wider national programmes developed to improve the quality of life in the aftermath of several hurricanes that had already devastated the country preceding this event.

In all this however, there is one area of hope, and that hope rests in the determination and resilience of the Haitian people. The overwhelming support given during that election is a signal that the majority of the people are prepared to work with you to carve a better future for all. It is my hope that this new zeal will be harnessed by all concerned to advance the recovery efforts.

Your Excellency, I wish to further extend my own support and that of the Government and people of Dominica, to you and all nationals of Haiti in making every possible contribution to securing a better life for all. Dominica has enjoyed very close bilateral relations with the people of Haiti. To date, several thousand Haitian nationals have made Dominica their homes. The integration process was simplified by the common culture including the common use of the Creole dialect. I extend to you and your Government, the same spirit of cooperation that has characterized our relations over the years and pledge my support in working with you to further deepen our cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.  I look forward to working with you as we seek innovative ways to advance our development interests.

Please accept Your Excellency assurances of my highest consideration.

ROOSEVELT SKERRIT

PRIME MINISTER

    There was a presidential elction in Haiti; and the people made their choice. The election of Michel Martelly is the best thing that happended for Haiti since its independence in 1804. For those of you that know nothing about Haiti; the political class has no interest in Haiti, that is why the country is the way it is today, and they are all rich. Haiti is the only country in the Caribbean where a minister or director of anything in the government is millionaire within his/her 30 days on the job.

    ************************Haitian & French Creole*********************************

    According to the PM;

    “The integration process was simplified by the common culture including the common use of the Creole dialect”.

    The Creole dialect??????

    I thought Hatian Creole was only spoken by Haitians!! Is the Hatian creole and French creole in DA the same?

    Be serious ; what Haiti needs for President is not a singer ;
    Haiti badly needs an educated and well trained economist ( and uncorrupted) for President.

    The n°1 problem of haiti is demography ; too many people fot that country ; n°2 is governance ( papa Doc, baby Doc, Aristide … and now, a rap singer ! )

    Look at the Dominican Republic : same island ( the other half of Hispaniola ) ; it is doing very well ; n°1 destination for tourists in the Caribbean ! well developped country !

      Papa Doc, Baby, Doc, and Aristide were all ‘educated men’ (note: non of them were economist), and what have they done? Although I believe in a solid education, I think before eduction, what Haiti needs is an uncorrupted goverment who cares deeply for its people – a government that will care for the poor and rich, and those between, a government whose representatives will not be flourishing in wealth while the lives of the every-day man keeps getting worst.

    Can’t you be compassionate to one of the stalwarts of Caribbeanism. Toussaint L’Overture’s people. Do we have to be negative in everything we do and say? Wasn’t there an election and the people spoke. All this talk about puppets etc. Give me a break. We need to support our Caribbean Bros & Sis and Haitians are one of them. They have suffered much. let us give them hope although real hope iis in the Lord our Father who is the Creator of all things.

    Let us for once read the letter in good faith. Down with negative vibers!

    The PM don’t realize that Sweet Mickey is another puppet put in power by the USA and France? He is of the Bourgeois class and has always been a vocal supporter of Baby Doc Duvalier and the TonTon Macoute. Now that Duvalier is back in Haiti under French and US protection, could he not also be his adviser behind the scenes?

    The popular party which the supporters of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide who was kidnapped by the US Marines and exiled in South Africa was not allowed to take part in the election hence the low turn-out at the polls.

    Skeritt needs to read not just what is in the news, but he also has to do empirical research too, and not to rush into these situations.

      I was a youth in the mid 70’s-80’s.RS is still a youth how do you expect the lad to know which way is up?I don’t blame him wholly but those who have been transform into frogs mountain chickens. Jumping from stone to stone( party to party following the $ as the objectiveSome of them have advance degrees too. I often wonder!.But RS needs reflective listening to ratrionalize his discreptancies and feed it back to himself.he ought to have read Rogerian theory if he did pass by psychology school.DA has drug and political addiction issues.

      April 30, 2011

      besides his blunder of referring to Creole as a dialect instead of a language, as a head of State & CARICOM leader the PM couldn’t have said anything different. I agree with you regarding who Sweet Mickey is & what he represents. Hopefully things will come full circle & a progressive leader like Aristide or even more progressive leader will rise.

      You ought to read and find out what heads of state are obliged to do when other heads of state are elected. Some of you people talk so much sh** and think it is fruit cake. You must be thinking through your ‘long fing’.
