PM’s stance on Gaddafi’s killing hypocritical – Edison James

James at this morning's press conference

President of the United Workers Party Edison James expressed that despite his agreement with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit denouncement of the extra-judicial killing of the former Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi he would have preferred that the Prime Minister had that sort of approach with regards to the situation sooner.

“It would have been less hypocritical. You cannot have stayed there and when Gaddafi had promised to kill his people like rats, and not only did he announce it, he started it. And at that critical moment the mayor of Roseau Cecil Joseph and the former Ambassador to Libya Emmanuel Nanthan for them to get involved in embracing what was going on. It is hypocritical,” he said.

James was speaking at the party’s press conference this morning in response to statements by the Skerrit earlier this week where he stated, “Like any civilized society we will never condone the manner in which a person is killed. We will never tolerate it, irrespective of whom the person is, or what the person may have done, or alleged to have done.”

James said, “I agree that everyone is entitled to due process. But let me just say that I would have been much more taken in by Mr. Skerrit’s comments if he, when Gaddafi had promised to kill his people like rats and in fact started the process, had condemned that commitment and that action.”

James added he believes that those statements have set Dominica contrary to the wider global position as it concerns the fallen leader.

“And Mr. Skerrit is pitting Dominica against the rest of the world in this matter. He was part of the assertion that these were racists that were doing this and doing that, but when a people like the Libyans came under attack with a commitment by the leader to kill them like rats, and embark on that process, we cannot take those things out of context,” he said.

Meantime, Ron Green said that the UWP will wait to see how the democracy that the Libyan people fought for develops before a decision is made as to whether or not Dominica is to continue diplomatic relations with the nation through the National Transition Council (NTC) which are currently in control of the country.

Lol Dominica is failing not because of the politician but because of it’s people and how they are so filled with hate that logical discussions scares and abused.
All I see in our comment is if I like somebody they right to say anything they want, if I hate them well at best they should not talk.
My only question is who are we really hurting with all this hatred.

It appears that to be honest and open as a President or Prime Minister on an issue like Libya it all comes down to money……people trying to appear humanitarian in the case of Gaddafi’s death but are scared to show openly, their outrage at a Leader ordering his soldiers to kill fellow citizens like rats and cockroaches……it appears that the life of a common Libyan citizen or thousands in this case is like a puff of smoke in the air compared to gaddafi……Why?? Money……Good Old MONEYYYY. De ordinary Libyans are poor…..we know that……why should their voice, pain, execution, murder, torture, desecration mean anything to anybody who thinks he is worth more than Gold…..Red Carpet, Bank Accounts, Oil, Camels, Palaces and the like…..(SATAN TEMPTED THE MESSIAH IN THE SAME FASHION)…….our moral compass is broken….we have lost all sense of morality……and clothed ourselves in Silken Bank Accounts, SEWO with the Devil, thousand dollar suits, sponsor my political campaign……….our next generation of leaders will have us running, running , running away, away, away, ………with nowhere to run……..but……to wallow in our own misdeeds, fears, pains, confusions…………a slow death pill

I totally agree with the PM. We should not at all support and promote “summary killings” of Leaders of Countries. There is both good and bad in all of us. If James was in the PM’s shoes and had built a relationsip with Gaddafi, he would have expressed the same sentiment and concern. James is playing politics as usual. If the PM had stayed silent, they would have all called him “ungrateful and indifferent”.

    October 27, 2011

By the way…Did Edison James speak out and condemn Gaddafi’s actions against the kill of the “RATS”?

I’m curious as to who in the opposition was man enough to stand up and say – Gaddafi is a tyrant before America proclaimed him to be.

And it’s hypocritical for him to come out and say..”let me just say that I would have been much more taken in by Mr. Skerrit’s comments if he, when Gaddafi had promised to kill his people like rats and in fact started the process, had condemned that commitment and that actions..”

What did he do when Gaddafi alledgedly said that about his people, although in all fairness he was referring to the armed forces, NOT civilians!

In a war like this – civilian casualties are what mattered.

I never heard Edsison stand up for the Libyan people. All i heard was that Skerritt is a friend of Gadaffi and yardee, yardee, yarda, everything was about SKERRITT, NOTHING about the innocent civilians – Not a damn thing

    There lies the hypocrisy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why didn’t he stand up for the Libyan ppl, why didn’t he as Opposition rallied against Skerritt’s camaraderie with Gaddifi… talking now is pointless after the fact.

Mr.James’ comment is actually riddled with half-truths, fallacies and inaccuracies. Those of you who don’t realize it just haven’t been following the war closely enough.

Mr.James stated that Gadhafi promised to kill his people like rats, but he left out that this statement came after the rebels had attacked army bases and police stations and taken over several towns. Gadhafi then launched a counter-attack and forced the rebels all the way back to Benghazi, at which point he told them to lay down their arms, or he will enter Benghazi and attack them.

This is the only point in the war where Gadhafi explicitly promised massive violence and it wasn’t against unarmed civilians but armed rebels with Al-Qaeda links trying to overthrow the gov’t.

Mr.James also implied that the ‘world’ was against Gadhafi. Unless the world consists of only the NATO countries and their allies in the Arab League such as Saudi Arabia and Quatar (which also have dictators btw!!) that statement is untrue.

For the record, Russia and China were against the Regime change. The African Union which represents all countries of Africa were against the regime change. the emerging powers of India and Brazil never threw their support behind the regime change.

So Mr.James is being fallacious to claim that that the NATO position is the ‘world’ position.

You so fool (I spelt it correctly)of hate you that Anti….Even if his the rebels and attacked his army base and police station, does that justify the statement made by Gaddafi? if he had taken a different approach may he would be alive this day but instead, he was the one that died as a rat.

I have been following your comment for a while now and that you are Anti-America and anything that stands for justice. I hope you are not one of those who escaped after 911 and the USA is looking for. I also hope you are not in the USA because they will one day find you. If you live in Dominica, Americans that read your comments will be afraid to come to Dominica, because you seem to pose a serious threat to them especially where air travel is concerned. I do hope that the government of Dominica keeps a close eye on you because your comments are full of Anti-America.

Fair is fair as I will always say. The world knows about Gaddafi and his actions. I am not a supporter of Gaddafi and never benefited from his assistance but I do think that what they did to him was totally wrong.
Since he financially assisted many countries as Dominica, it makes good sense that the manner in which he died and prior to his death, being kicked and walked all over, shoes being thrown at him that the PM will condemn it. The PM is correct. If the PM remained silent, I would think that he is hypocritical. I, personally condemned what they did to him.
Our Lord said: “You have heard an eye for an eye but it should not be so.” Our Lord has told us to turn the other cheek and love our enemies. Do good to those who hate us.” As difficult as it is to practice, we are obligated to practice it. Those who keep saying “Allah, Allah”, as they call us Westerners infidel, should also practice it. If it were they would they like to be treated in that manner? Would their family, friends and supporters be pleased? The Golden Rule applies to each and everyone one of us with no exception.
Other countries as the U.S., Canada and the European countries spoke about his demise with great pleasure that he is eradicated from the face of the earth. Not one of them stated that he should not have died in that manner.
Do you think that God is displeased with them for what they did to Gaddafi and not giving him the opportunity to stand before the International Court of Law? Well, their turn will come. We can only hope that Libya will be a democratic country and at peace. Time will tell.
When Saddam was caught he was treated better than that by the U.S. until the time he was executed.
A few of us have discussed it and we do agree that they were wrong to kill him. He told them, “Do not shoot.” They went ahead anyway and murdered him and desecrated his body while he was still alive. This is why the UN is requesting an investigation into this matter. In all fairness to a human being who was alive when he was caught, an investigation into his death is feasible.

Thank you very much Mr. James. From your lips to the world’s ears. I hope people are listening and paying attention. I wondered why the authorities had been so quiet on the situation in Libya since the Ambassador to Libya’s comment on Dominica NewsOnline in February. Was Mr Ambassador Nanthan concerned about Saif Al-Islam Gadhaffi’s statement that there would be rivers of blood in the streets of Libya or his dad Moammar’s pronouncement that citizens would be killed like rats and cockroaches? Oh no. Our venerable Ambassador was concerned that the uprising could affect and retard progress of investments in Dominica. In his own words, “there are a number of plans that’s in progress and we are trying to do out best to develop these programs”

The fact is the people of Libya deposed an unpopular dictator who did not know when it was time to go. As a brute you live, as a brute you die.

The future of Dominica/Libya relations is an interesting topic. Ambassador Nanthan should try to develop his new programs with the new Libyan government. Yes we care!

The question is, did Skerrit take that stance because 1. He is really concerned about the manner in which Gaddafie was killed? 2.Gaddafi’s death really paints a very bleak picture of his own future? 3.Is he now thinking of where he will get cash from now that Gaddafi is dead, Chavez not healthy, and China not giving him money? 4. Or did the message finally hit him that evil will not last forever?

When the war started in February and by April Gaddafi had killed over 20,000 Lybians, Skeritt never condemned that. Some of the civilians were raped and brutally murdered; yet Skeritt said nothing.

Although Skeritt did not publicly blame the US for the death of Gaddafi, it is very clear to me that he got very close. What he and his supporters must remember is, when the war started in February, it was Lybians that decided that enough is enough and it was Lybians that killed him after he had killed thousands of his own people.
So I hope Skeritt got the message and becareful with the friend he is aligning himself and indeed my beloved country with. He needs to remember that “He who kills by the sword will die by the sword,” and that’s just what happened to his friend Gaddafi.

Well said Mr. James, well said. He should have said he ia against what gadhafi did in the past and was still doing to his people, but he did not, maybe he and his advisors thought Gadhafi would make it through. No one liked how he was killed but it’s maybe better that way. Even majority wanted him out and dead but remember he still had his supporters just like Mr.Skerrit has his supporters even if many people want him out. If gadhafi was alive, maybe fighting would never end and if would make a bad situation worst.
Now Mr.James talking now about what Skeritt should have done, now why don’t they stop being children and sit in parliament. Pure childish….then again that is politics for you, always try to make the other side look bad.

Some people will never learn. Different day same old story.

Again James made Skerrit the focal point of his statement. As a political leader he should have concentrated more on HIS own account of that global captivating event that occured in Libya there.

And again James should provide proof of his statments if he is going to make them in his capacity as a political leader. Contrary to your statements of killing them like rats, one can search on the internet for reports from Christiana Amanpour and reports of Russian satelite imagery contradicting that very same claim.

Skerrit is definitely not my idol, but after all people, if you were doing business with the man getting aid and all that and all of a sudden he is being hunted by sinister forces with sinister intentions, would you just turn on the guy when he needed a friend the most?

Should Skerrit now throw support behind these new guys after the way the massacred black Libyans and the way they tortured and murdered an unarmed defenseless old man?

Ok, everybody seems to be condemning Gaddafi for his statments about killing them like rats. But unlike the other Arab Spring uprisings, this was not millions of un-armed civilians demonstrating against Gaddafi you know. These were well armed, Al Qaida trained, western supported, cut-throat, ruthless sharia islamic thugs coming to get him you know.

I don’t know Mr. James, but I very much doubt your sincerity in condemning the extra judical killing of Gaddafi. It seems your motive here is to stick it to Gaddafi to stick it to Skerrit in turn. That is the way all you do it in Dominica, all of all you.

Brother Gaddafi needs to be remembered for his efforts in forging greater political and economic integration in Africa. Similarly, Gaddafi’s investment in many sectors of the African economy will also be remembered.

I hope that the recognition by many African countries, including Ghana, of the National Transitional Council (NTC), would encourage them to honour the principles of justice and fairness. More importantly, I hope the NTC will stretch out a hand of conciliation and work towards uniting its entire people for the huge task of national reconstruction.

the world mourn all the dead in the crisis and wish the Libyan people peace and reconciliation.

At the end, I still believe Gadaffi was the best deal for the Libyan people. This only started after he ended tea time with Condolecia Rice and tony Blair.
