EDITOR’S NOTE: Elections for the Roseau City Council will take place on November 18 and a number of candidates are in the race. Dominica News Online is in the process of putting together a brief profile of the candidates. Below are those we have so far.

Linsay George
Linsay George

Lindsay George, 34, of Bath Estate, is the owner of Krystallion Inc. “I believe, you can say, that my approach, it is slightly different … we need to start from the inside out,” he said.

He pointed out that contesting the election is not about politics for him but “helping people who have expressed to me that they need someone to basically take that type of mantle.”

“I see people that’s in need and I respond to that,” he said.

According to him a unified front is necessary to build the city and restore pride.

He has described himself as “an entrepreneur, a community oriented individual and one who in particular, believes in unity, strength in members. Somebody who is poised towards helping people help themselves and finding solutions to issues and problems through innovative means.”

Georgette Deravairere
Georgette Deravairere

Georgette Deravairere, 28, preschool teacher at the Little Gem Preparatory is contesting Ward 4 which consists of Ravine Croque, Fond Cole, Stock farm, Yampiece, Tarish Pit, Gutter Village, and lower parts of Goodwill.

She stated that she wants to bring “good sporting facilities within these communities.”

“My focus also is to keep a clean and green community in each community of that ward. In going up, my dream and my aim is to allow each Dominican to feel proud of their community,” she remarked.

Deravairere said that she is also seeking to bring better educational facilities to her ward.

“My symbol is the bird. I will be there for each and every person, each and every child…. I look at the areas and it is just a mess and I believe change is a must. I believe we should rise and together. I believe I can allow that rise to happen,” she said.

Samantha Nichols
Samantha Nichols

Samantha Nichols, of Kingshill whose symbol is the car, is seeking to represent Ward 1 which consists of Elmshall, Newtown, Kingshill, Morne Bruce, Fortune, Citronier Beau Bois, virgin Lane High Street and Cornwall Street.

She founded a youth group called ‘Youth for a change’ in 2005 which focused on clean ups, sports and social activities.

“Right now my main reason for coming up for this election is that I had a meeting with my group and they were telling me that they need some sporting facilities and they need to see the community clean and they need jobs and they asked me to represent them,” she said.

She said she accepted the challenge and called for the ward’s support to “fight to save our communities and to restore the pride in our communities”.

Clifford LaFond
Clifford LaFond

Clifford Lafond, 40, an employee of DASPA, is from Virgin Lane and wants to represent Ward 1, along with Nichols.

He said he is not satisfied with the state of Roseau.

He is a long distance runner who has represented Dominica in the past.

He said he is the President of the Basketball RSA League and members are faced with poor facilities and once he’s elected,  he will seek to give more attention to sports and sporting facilities.

Lafond said he will also focus on churches, preschools and high schools in his ward which need urgent attention.

Anwar Caddette
Anwar Caddette

Anwar Cadette, 30 of Stockfarm, is an employee of First Domestic Insurance and President of the youth arm of the United Workers Party. He wants to represent Ward 4 and is encouraging all “to make a difference.”

“Presently when we look at our community. we can see our community is not what it was before, one of the biggest disappointments for me is we have the Dominica State College and there is no sporting facility for these young people,” he said.

He pointed out that prominent sports personalities have come from the ward and without the proper facilities, “it keeps the youth down”.

He too would like to address that need and encouraged his ward to “come support because if we don’t make a change …then nobody is going to do it for us”.

Vanessa Prevost
Vanessa Prevost

Vanessa Prevost 40, Manager of Prevost Cinemall who wants to represent Ward 2 said she has been living in the city for about seven years now and it needs to be cleaned up.

“Roseau can be one of the most beautiful cities in the Caribbean and we need to take advantage of the fact that we are nestled in the Roseau Valley,” she said.

“I would like to see things happen in the city,” she stated and noted that she wants it clean, green and safe.

Her symbol is the car.

Some fine looking young people coming into public service. I hope that they will all have opportunities to serve their country and their communities.

I pray that they will not lose their integrity or ideals along the way.

When you aim for high office you expose yourself to public judgement. I agree with ms. Prevost that Roseau “needs to be cleaned up” and would suggest that, as the manager of the Prevo Cinemall she would do her prospects no harm by setting an example and clean up the mess at the rear of her premises first. That would earn her a lot of credit. Good luck in your campaign!

Time to commercialise the Capital. Too many people live in extrelely poor conditions in the middle of town. Time to tear down those old unsightly buildings in the city. Time to selling food in run down shacks. Time to do away with ghetos in the city where people have no toilet and basic facilities. Commercialise the city. Make room for business. This is the CAPITAL CITY!!!!!!!

I support the effort of this group….I am afraid that Govt will hijack the council with its elected members to do Govt bidding….just as has always been done in the Canefield Urban Council…

if my knowlege is serveing me right, couple months ago,was there not an intiative to restructure roseau, like the side walks and so on,i am not seeing or hearing any of that talk,in any of the profiles hear, this program is null and void or what,no talk of building back drains and covering them with iron grills, which of course people will not fall in, especailly during carnival street jump up,and would be easy to clean, placing gabbage bins and so on is not going to solve roseau problems, roseau has to be approuched as a commercial sector, environmental police to fine people for litering, odinary police for chaseing vagrants and loitering persons, this is what they do in places like the phillipins, brazil, ect.wash down roseau at night, make use of the fire service,we own water,we do not buy water, use it,all those historical building, restructure them, tear down all them eye saw buildings, fine the owners, for those drains open the fire hydrants, wash the drains, privatise gabbage colection to locals, let them get in the business, their are mini size gabbage trucks, the car and suv dealers, bring in them types of trucks, years now,the talk about clean roseau been around for like a century now,it been song in calipso, and no changes, since solomon dead, environment cleanliness dead,i think this whole team should work together and fix roseau.

Very soon, if we are not there yet, Roseau will have a major traffic problem. ABSOLUTELY NO WHERE TO PARK. I am glad to see development taking place in Roseau – new commercial buildings. But I am appealing to the powers that be to demand that owners anyone/company who desire to erect a commercial building in Roseau should make provisions for parking by their customers, and/or employees. Planning should maybe insist before giving the go ahead to build. Independence Street is quickly developing with the new Jays, and the two new buildings, corner of Kennedy Ave and next to the Credit Union. One can only imagine the traffic congestion when they are completed and opened for business. Please prevent the problem from occurring don’t want to resolve it, it will be too late.

    • November 14, 2013

Talk about parking, people have NO PLACE TO WALK IN ROSEAU. Roseau really need MORE THAN ONE PARKING BUILDING.

    • mention
      November 17, 2013

@ Roseau Girl I share your sentiments, but one of the things affecting us when it comes to parking is that everybody wants a keep clear or no parking at the front of their business.I have seen certain areas or business who do not really need that and its given to them.Sometimes people even get their own sign and place it to suit them. I think the authorities should revisit those things and should determine who genuinely need them. In my opinion wholesale areas should get that privilege and not like valentines who put up a make shift sign to deter people from parking and also alico and a few other who doesnt require that privilege.

You all want to represent me? Please make all you self more presentable. Prevost needs to dress more appropriately. Lafond needs a hair cut.George is just not serious according to his profile. They see how rich skerritt has gotten as PM and wants piece of the pie. Dominicans have learnt their lessons. We will know the sheeps from the goats.

    November 14, 2013

When we had stand pipes in Roseau, water used to flow and clean the gutters, but no water now to clean them since Mr. Savarin, while he was a minister, said close all stand pipes in Roseau

    • November 14, 2013

@Hello, now that Savarin is President, go to him and have him clean the drains. He is now in position to do just that.

      Good luck.

    • Malgraysa
      November 15, 2013

Mister did not want people to have free water and he had a point as a lot of that was wasted. Instead people with waste water, such as restaurants should be forced to connect to the central sewer that was put in years ago at great expense.

      • mention
        November 17, 2013

While i agree when the water was flowing the drains were somewhat cleaner you should remember that shutting down the stand pipes were done to prevent people from washing clothes, bathing and washing of vehicles. Things like these you cant tolerate thet in your capital city because this sends a bad message.

  17. Hello
    November 14, 2013

It comes down to the development of Roseau. I am fed up of people at the bus stands dirtying Roseau, Peeing on the sidewalks, and when you talk to them about it they curse or tell you open your mouth let me ……. Then they turn around and say Roseau dirty or smelling. I am from Roseau, my mother was, my grand parents were all from Roseau and it hurts to see what Roseau has come to.

    • November 14, 2013

@Hello, I am NOT from Roseau but you are right. ROSEAU IS DISGUSTING FOR A TOWN. CONGESTED, SMELLING AND ALL.

I know the people from Roseau will say, why come to Roseau? My answer is, I do not have to. I do not live in Dominica, and when I visit I do not care to go to Roseau.

    • halibot
      November 15, 2013

so since you highlighted ‘people at the bus stands’… you’re implying is outsiders alone that causing the nastiness… ok… hhhmmmmm

    Well good luck to all.

Roseau needs to be constructed from scratch. but I am aware Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Those smelly drains/gutters need to be covered and proper drainage put in place.

All paros need to be picked up and placed in an instution. no paro should be roaming the street.

we need a corporate street. I see the subway, Jays, burtons area looking great and modern now. Just make Kennedy Avenue into top notch buildings and offices.

Alot needs to be done, but starting point of clean and safe is key.

    Again, Wipe off the paros…

    • Shepherd
      November 14, 2013

I support u 100%. Get rid of those damn paros. they smell

@Shepherd, the paros are not the only ones smelling.

Hey DNO, wat’s popping? Could you please ensure that the basic information for “all” the candidates is made clear. you may or may not include their ages however it is necessary to include 1. the ward they are representing and 2. the areas in that ward as well as 3. the symbol which will be used to represent them. Thanks.

    • November 14, 2013

I think the majority’s symbol is the CAR. Confusing to people that are unable to read. They may vote for the WRONG CAR.

From what I’ve read these aspiring councilors have no idea what they are talking about. If I had to vote for them based on their profiles, they would never get elected. They think they taking over central government, man??? I mean they are young and ambitious but is Roseau City Council we talking about, not Central Government

    • Britbob
      November 14, 2013

The comment you posted may be more critical than you think. What is the role of Local Government? Is is just to clean drains and look after the market?Or is it to promote the City? Draw in investment to the community? Seek to upgrade the environment in terms of street furniture, traffic, vegetation, green space, and floral displays? To foster municipal pride in the residents so they no longer put up with filthy streets, vagrants, noise pollution, inconsiderate road use and inappropriate building use? (why are there warehouses and garages in the middle of the City which should be reserved for retail commerce, residents and tourists? wht should central Government get involved in Roseau people ting??
