Government ministers could soon be provided with additional security.
That’s because Housing and Lands Minister Reginald Austrie believes they are not safe anymore.
He said some members of the opposition have been invoking violence in some citizens and government should take the matter very seriously.
“People can easily flip and go overboard because they are being fertilized and fed with venom that can easily tip a crazy man to do something crazy and I believe this is where the country is headed.” he said.
Austrie said as a politician, he has never felt so unsafe.
“I have never been so cautious about my security before. I say a lot of things but I have never felt so frightened before. I go to Marigot, I don’t think I need security 24 hours around me but it has gotten to a stage where we may soon have to consider that because I don’t think government ministers are safe anymore,” he said.
He said the people have not responded to Opposition calls to attack ministers “but that is the call out there”.
Austrie said ministers should even be careful where they eat these days.
“I am very conscious about where and what eat. This is getting really frightening and I am very concerned about that,” he added.

For a government that is ruling 18-3, they should be well loved. They got 18 constituencies to protect them from the 3. Are you suggesting Mr. Austrie that the support is no longer there, they have all returned to their respective homes. Do not worry, they will be back 2014 temporarily to give you all a bigger win. If there are persons inciting violence against government officials or anyone for a matter of fact they should be dealt expediently by law enforcement. Having security for ministers is not enough or practical in deterring such individuals.
In Dominica we have great freedoms especially where speech is concerned but we are not a people who have been known to use this freedom to incite hate or violence. We do not like something or someone we just say so but never incite violence (a freedom that’s unique to Dominica). I hope those perpetrators would put an immediate halt to such a nasty approach to getting their way and not ruin the uniqueness of our lovely Dominica. The freedoms we enjoy in Dominica today cannot be seen anywhere else in today’s world. I am sure that most Dominicans do not want the kind of ignorance that’s now an intrinsic part of the culture of the outside world.

I live and work in D/a. For a Dominican living overseas and listening to Q95 daily, it may be easy to believe that the country is in a state of upheaval and on the verge of an uprising.
Fact of the matter is that on the ground I see no evidence of this. At my workplace, u hear the usual complaints, mainly about the cost of living in d/a. I don’t hear anyone talking about feeling the oppression of dictatorship..and many of my co-workers are pro-UWP.

Such a shame this is coming from a minister. What kind of example is he setting for the rest of the country. Did he even take into consideration the tourism industry. With such a statement how are tourists ever going to feel same to visit Dominica? I think something else is bothering him. Just come out and tell the truth.

this is so true, that’s something that I have been saying for a long time. just this week I posted a comment on DNO, about a remark that the opposition leader made, and I quote, we will mobilized our people to take action, end quote. my Beloved Dominicans it is time for us to look beyond political party and work for the greater good of country. we are known to be a peaceful people let us try to keep it that way, the Devil is raging and is looking to bring us Down as a people.
Anyway Dominican in the BVI- Your mind is very, very limited if you think that the statement “We will mobilized our people to take action” means calling for violence. I respect everybody’s opinion, but a lot of times I am ashamed as a Dominica to see the level of idiocy that is coming from Dominicans. @ BUWO I will give you just one explanation I think that covers it all- Peaceful PROTEST as is done in every civilized Democratic country around the world. It is only in despotic countries that this right is not respected! Like in Syria, Venezula, Iran, Morrocco,China and the rest of Dominica’s friends! It is they who turn peaceful protest into violence since they do not tolerate it.

Minister Austrie, may appear to be paranoid, but really government Ministers cannot expect to ignore the signs that are coming from the opposition.
May 29 1979 was a dark day in Dominica’s history. It resulted in setting back Dominica’s development by decades. Many people who were involved with staging the protest withdrew to the shadows when it was very clear that those days were hateful days. Even those who were involved in the Union action alongside with Charles Savarin passed the blame on him and him only. That is how they wished never to have been associated with May 29 1979. It is as though it was Charles Savarin alone who planned, executed and managed the events of May 29th , 1979.
Today the evenmts of May 29th 1979 are placed on record (CD) as a means of stimulating the public anger against the government. Those who depsised and never wished to be associated with May 29th 1979 are todasy busy promoting the event as a watershed day in the politics of Dominica asking the youh to rise up against government a la May 29th 1979. Can you imagine that?
That is why the opposition is up in arms with the improved intelligence gathering mechanism of government. The know they are planning for strife, chaos and confusion in the state, they know they want the government out of office by any means necessary, they know they are planning to put “boots” on the ground type activities to coincide with the upcomingh holidays, although D. Bruney warned them about the quantity of boots they must have to be effetive; they know they have sizeable support from among the ranks of the police force and the Special Services Unit in particular; they know that Mr. Skerrit is delivering on his many promises to the country, and so his popularity has sky rocketted and so their work of unseating him through legal means will take perhaps another decade. So they are planning illegal means to get the government out of office. So mr. Austrie is right. Any government thatis able to gather the kind of intelligence that government has about the opposition and chose to ignore the same and be naive is not fit to be in governmenmt.The opposition wouldbe right.
