Review relationship with Libya – UWP to government

James (left), Skerrit and Moammar Gadhafi

The United Workers Party is calling on the Roosevelt Skerrit led administration to review its relationship with Libya.

There are reports that tens of thousands of foreigners are trying to flee Libya after clashes between security forces and protesters reportedly left hundreds dead.

American network NBC is reporting that part of the east of the country has “fallen” to the protesters and is no longer controlled by the central government.

UWP Spokesman on Foreign Affairs and former Prime Minister Edison James says government should also take measures to protect Dominicans currently studying or working in Libya.

“The UWP is concerned about development in the Middle East, including Libya and Morocco. Most disturbing is that citizens of Libya, who are seeking higher levels of democracy, are reportedly being murdered by their own government. This is a most despicable act which should not be tolerated in any civilized society,” he said.

James said against this background the UWP is also calling on government to take urgent action to ensure that Dominican nationals who might be studying or working in Libya be assisted to leave immediately.

“Additionally, all ongoing arrangements to send Dominicans to Morocco for the purpose of pursuing study should be put on hold until conditions change for the better,” he said.

James said it is also important for Dominicans to hear from the country’s Ambassador to Libya Emmanuel Nathan who he says “have been making frequent trips to Libya”.

“Government should also explain the extent, if any, to which recent arrangements with Morocco might be affected by the current unrest,” James added

Dominica’s Ambassador to Libya Emmanuel Nanthan confirmed that there are no Dominicans studying or working in Libya.

Dominica enjoys a close relationship with Libya. In 2005 Skerrit visited the country’s leader Moammar Gadhafi and the Jamahiriya News Agency reported that he wrote in the visitor’s register the following, “The care of God was actually with the Leader, to continue the leadership of the struggle of this people. Long live the struggle of people, long live the Leader, long live the South-South. Long live Libya.”

The Libyan government has assisted Dominica in initiatives such as the “Yes we Care” program which was described as a “major social initiative that will bring relief to the most vulnerable people in Dominica, the elderly”.

Meanwhile Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has remained defiant despite the violent protests now enveloping his country. “I will die as a martyr at the end,” he said in a rambling speech today. “I have not yet ordered the use of force, not yet ordered one bullet to be fired … when I do, everything will burn.”

A statement on the matter is expected to be released by the government of Dominica soon.

I live in Europe and yesterday i had the opportunity to listen to Kadhafi’s first speech to the nation since the uprising. I hope you dominicans had the same opportunity as well!!; he has promised to purify his people by a blood bath and has promised to remain in power by all means. All european countries have asked their expatriates to leave Libya as soon as possible. The different states have made this exodus possible by providing airplanes. Libyans are fleeing their country!! Does that say anything to you Dominicans. Why has the roosevelt skeritt administration supported a country that has no respect for human rights. Is that what Dominica has come to. Selling her soul for a piece of gold? I hope that he ( the P.M ) will ensure the safety of the dominicans who may be out there; >But then what will he do? will he charter a plane from Melvillehall to Tripoli to get them out? And then , where will it land??? Most of the towns are now under control of the citizens. Dominicans, think about what is happening out there in the arab world. The people are only fighting for their basic rights. Freedom of expression, the right to vote, the right to proper education , health services , equal distribution of the resources…….!!! And you ,don’t you think that you too should stand up for what is RIGHT???????

I’m seeing from most of the news that our people lack empathy for the people of Libya, very sad and irresponsible. We are behaving the same way America to Israel, they fail to address the inhumane treatment of the Palestinians.

Well, I’m non-partisan when it comes to DA politics.
But the fact of the matter that you cannot see (where unemployment is high in DA) that the work is going towards chinese workers, and not our own? What about the high unemployment over here? Why no jobs for OUR PEOPLE?

As a Labourite – and of course, you have your opinions – but please, for once, put your political colors out of the matrix for the a minute and re-read what you have just written. Because I can’t believe that you can be so BLIND in what is happening in DA today.

What if something really happens to a Dominican in Libya? What will you be saying here if someone is hurt or even killed? What if it’s your relative? When are some of you going to quit your ignorance!!! This is sickening!!
Some of you like to talk about god, but the sad thing is, many that are posting here have lost their souls. I see a posting about a little girl missing, and the response from some people is about government and politics…People getting killed…same thing…rape….same thing..child abuse..same thing…DO YOU HAVE A SOUL? Are you so blinded that you’ve lost touch with reality?

You hear what Gahafi said? He has not even ordered one bullet yet and so many people has been killed. When he feels that his days are gong, may God bless the people of Libia. And why is it that it is only mad men like Gahafi, Castro, Chavez and the one from Morocco skewo decide to role with? Why can’t he role with people like Obama, Cameron, Merkel, Berlusconi, Harper and so on?
Don’t you think the latter set are a more impressive group?

Maybe Eddison wants to feel important by what he says. It’s pretty obvious that any country would assess its position relative to; turmoil, upheavals, unrest or coups in other countries. This happened with the USA and other countries and Egypt recently. Especially with the view to protecting their citizens!

What is he doing? Preaching to the choir!

      February 23, 2011

      @ Just saying

I do agree with you. When I read Edison James article I thought of the same thing. His article is senseless and yes, every world government which has ties/friendship with Libya will understandably, based under Libya’s present circumstances, review their affiliation with it. Dominica is no exception. I have confidence that the PM as other governments are presently considering it. it may not be long that Libya will be restored to a democratic country.
At present it is impossible to communicate with Libya about any administrative matter since the country is in chaos and Gadhafi is fighting to retain his position and to preserve his life.
I do wish that some people would not continue to lambaste Prime Minister Skerrit. Give him a break and to exercise his duties! He is a human being. Have confidence in him. A lot of talk/comments and no action is forthcoming from them which do not assist Dominica in any way. This depends on their mentality, those who are so quick to criticize the PM and offer advice which is no way assists Dominica and its growth.

If there are no Dominican nationals in Libya, then Dominica must not meddle in Libya’s internal affairs. See, that is the problem with politics today and that is exactly y there is so much political unrest globally. some governments assumed the role of world police and have lost all respect for other people’s cultures, beliefs and general way of life. it’s the western powers trying to impose their ideologies on the rest of the world that has instigated so much misery everywhere else. it’s the disrespect and total disregard for the sovereignty of foreign nations that has caused such degradation and the current situation in the middle east.

And let’s face it, the interventions and so called changes make no better the situations in these so called rogue nations. look at Iraq, the situation there is far worst now than it was under Saddam, more atrocities and human rights violations are being committed now by foreign troops than under Saddam’s regime. The war against weapons of mass destruction was based on a lie and the man who lied and sold hos story to the US confessed to the world last week that he had lied about it and that they knew he was lying.

Now, are the reports that we receive on the Libya situation genuine? Who’s media is doing the reporting? Amazing that after Gaddafi reportedly shut down all lines of communication and foreign correspondence they still manage to get so much information out and so quickly, so we must ask ourselves, is this information accurate or is it modified such that the wrong signals are received by the rest of the world, further fueling a diplomatic war and justify more sanctions against Libya?

International politics is based on dishonesty and a desire for one nation to control of the whole world and all it’s resources, divide and conquer and divide and rule. who is the real dictator?

So while UWP trying to court America and invite them to intervene in our politics they must understand that they only inviting in the very threat to our democracy, the threat to our political independence and the democracy that we so highly value. they inviting the very threat to our existence and the way of life which identifies us as a nation, as a truly free people.

so if UWP wants the PM to lash out against Libya and condemn Gaddafi in order to favor US opinion then I say to the PM, leave it alone don’t meddle with Libya’s internal affairs our business is here at home.

    February 22, 2011

I agree that the government should ensure that the well beings fo Dominicans in Libya and that of those who are planning of going near the region be taken into consideration.

having said that – i would think that this is a matter or protocol for any government and no special need or request should have to be made to the government to try its utmost to safeguard it’s citizens in any other country which is in distress.

The Dominican people should at least be informed that all is being done to ensure the safety of Dominicans who are protected under Dominica.

    • KAISO : 'That old Speaker'
      February 22, 2011

Have you listened to the calypso ‘The Speaker?’ Pros, The Calypsonian rightly reminded Dominicans that the old Speaker cannot be fixed. Questions put to Govt. are being BLOCKED. Where have you been? What about the questions put to Govt. about Susan Olde and the $400,000.00? What about questions dealing with other corrupt practices or others that the people need clarification and responses to. The people MUST KNOW, MUST BE INFORMED about the issues affecting their lives. Govt has a duty to do just that. Things cannot be done in SECRET and kept away from the Dominica people who put politicians in Public Office. They are supposed to be our SERVANTS not our MASTERS.

Remember the opposition was charged thousands of dollars in court for asking a question in parliament? The question was genuine. Let me remind you that presently in Dominica’s Parliament there are two Parliamentarians who are there ILLEGALLY, because they lied about their DUAL CITIZENSHIP status on the Nomination form. Didn’t they know that their actions were AGAINST THE LAWS of the land? How often our LAWS are DISRESPECTED.

Dominicans exercised their HUMAN RIGHTS to ASSEMBLE PEACEFULLY to express their concerns about issues affecting their lives. What happened? Charges are laid on people two months after. Police did not prevent the Assembly and never reported that there was any fighting, or trouble as a result.

Today, the people of Libya are expressing their rights to assemble and are protesting peacefully, but they are being massacred. Many Leaders in this world refuse to LISTEN to the people. Dictators rule with an iron hand not wanting the people to express their concerns or to vent their feelings even in a peaceful manner. They RAPE their country by enriching themselves. They OPPRESS and muzzle the people. They shun any democratic process. Usually massive fraud and irregularities take place in Elections. In many countries those Elections are not FREE and FAIR. They do anything illegal to get into and stay in POWER.

At one time or the other, when the people can take no more expect them to protest, to rise up against such dictatorial rule. We are witnessing a TSUNAMI of peaceful demonstrations in the ARAB countries and determined protests against injustices done to the people over a number of years. Unfortunately, the dictators response is to attack, charge, imprison and even kill their own country men and women fighting for their RIGHTS and FREEDOMS. That is what should concern us in Dominica, because the present TRENDS in our country, SWEET DOMINICA, are disturbing and frightening. NEVER AGAIN SLAVERY. NEVER AGAIN DICTATORIAL RULE.

That’s how they control Americans to make them believe that they are loved all across the world no matter their actions. However he has hit the nail right on the head with this one. No crappy slander and right to the point. Very well done. I’m impressed. He should be leading the opposition, definitely. I think the PM already knew that though. But well done and keep that up. That’s what we need to hear. But remember Britain was in business with Libya so let’s not jump too far

    • Fuke-CHillot!
      February 22, 2011

I wouldn’t quite say that news in the USA reports what it wants its people to believe. There are things happening that are covered in order to protect certain vital information from the public, But in news report regardless if its from the USA or other countries, They must be proven before they are given to the public. I think you should think about what you say before you say it.

In contrast, what you said about Mr. James statement i support. We sometimes knock people out with illicit and indecent comments before we think, but he is making a point and I HOPE (well although it will happen) that some idiots do not take this and make it a political confusion. Good work Mr. James. Skerr-Skerr you should take that into consideration wi friend. This is a very serious matter, this is the lives of our own roots and soil we talking about here. Maybe even transferring them. I just hope that whatever course of action you choose will not leave any sour taste in the mouth of anyone and that peace and happiness shall be the fruits we bear from it.

The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica does not meddle in the internal affairs of Countries that it has Diplomatic Relationships with.

The Dominican Government is on record at the UN , the OAS, and other International forum as respecting basic and fundamental Human Rights, the right to freedom of association, religion, and respect for the media.

Oh Patat, I can only shake my head! You really believe we are that mighty and have the wherewithal to interfere in another country’s affairs, even if we wanted to?Let’s keep our feet firmly on the ground.
As for the ideals, which we support in different forums, whether it be the U.N., O.A.S. etc., this is only to be expected from the democratic nationj we claim to be. Yet, our sincerety and trustworthiness are questioned when at the same time we sign away the recognition of Polisario, a legitimate U.N. organisasation, whose right to selfdetermination for the people of the W.Sahara is upheld by the African Union, for a pottage of mess from Morocco.

Oh cerebrus! our domestic agenda is what determines our foreign policy. When last did you hear about Polisario Front doing anything for Dominica – good or bad? Even if the UN recognises that organisation, does that mean anything to us. The UN recognizes so many organizatiosn and countries that have raised hells against our economic survival. literallyu dragging us to the dogs. Remmeber when Eddy went to the US and cried foul over the “Economic Terrorists” who were bent on driving our banana industry to the drains. Aren’t these economic terrorists recognized by the UN?

We should cultivate friends with those countries and organizations that are trully our friends. The fight to preserve certain poitical philiosphies and geopolitical agendas has not brought and good to Dominica. Any ordinary thirty year old person in Dominica cannot tell you anything about the Polisario Front. Well send them to ask Rosie. Athie has no currency in popular poitics in Dominica, so do not send anybody to ask him.

Prime Minister Skerrit is on the right track. Callit begging if you will, but when the time comes they all Skerrit haters ask to go to China for international airport, Alba for development assistance. They quickly fogot that because Skerrit was driven by a no nonesense approach to the country’s development agenda they would have had their way against diplomatic relations with China or Dominica becoming a member of ALBA.

By the way you can dismiss me as a resident of Monkey Hill. Your attitude says alot about what you think of people from up there. We are no less thasn you anyway.
