Roosevelt Skerrit’s general election victory speech

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. *Photo credit: Sean DouglasFellow Dominicans, friends and well wishers…To God be the glory…Great things he hath done!

We have come to the end of a necessary, but arduous process of electing a new administration, to manage the affairs of government for the next five years. I am grateful, but humbled, that you have once again reposed your confidence in the Dominica Labour Party. On behalf of the candidates of the Dominica Labour Party, and also on behalf of the officers and members of that great institution, I would like to thank you, most sincerely, for your vote of confidence and endorsement.

I wish, first, to congratulate the first time Parliamentary Representatives-in-Waiting; those who ran as candidates of the Dominica Labour Party, as well as those elected on the ticket of the United Workers Party. I look forward to your able contributions in Parliament, and also to your servicing the needs of your respective constituencies. At the end of the last Parliament, we bid farewell to several retiring Parl Reps. I am satisfied this evening that their places in Parliament will be aptly taken and filled by the new members.

I also congratulate the returning Members of Parliament, to whom the first timers will look for support and guidance.

My commiserations are extended also to those who did not quite make it on this occasion. I hope they will be gracious in defeat and will accept the will and verdict of voters.

I believe that Dominica is the ultimate winner this evening; for we have successfully demonstrated to the region and the world, our capacity to conduct a peaceful and democratic election, in which the will of the majority of voters has been respected and granted.

Fellow Dominicans, when I set the date of December 18th as General Elections Day, I was fully conscious and cognizant of the fact that it was seven days to Christmas, and that an immediate transition would have to be made for us to foster and reflect the true and intended spirit of the season. I had confidence in the Dominica Labour Party to win this election. I also had confidence in the voters and other residents of Dominica to make the necessary transition, in a rather short period of time, so that the spirit and atmosphere of the season could be harnessed and reflected in our actions and attitudes one to the other.

Tonight, the victors will, I am sure, celebrate their success…and we must make provision for that! This has been a long and sometimes bruising general elections campaign, and celebration of victory is definitely in order. Members and supporters of the Dominica Labour Party are by now heading to Portsmouth, where our party’s celebrations will take place. I want for these celebrations to be lively, but in good taste. There is no room for acrimony or gloating. We accept our victory, with humility.

It being seven days to Christmas, I do not want for Dominica to remain divided. I want for us to close ranks and embrace the triumph of our democracy. I therefore will be advising my party to suspend formal celebrations after tonight, until a designated period in the New Year, when I look forward to expressing our thanks and appreciation to the voters of Dominica, in grand and traditional style. It is my intention therefore, after consultation with the private sector, to declare a public holiday in the month of January, so that the country can truly celebrate and savor the achievement of our having conducted a peaceful and conclusive process of electing a new government.

This campaign, Ladies and Gentlemen, has had its unfortunate moments. The quality and level of public, media and platform debate has not always been what it should be, and there will be scars. My wish is for us to sign on to the goal and spirit of moving this country forward…indeed, to the next level. I appeal to the victors, to temper jubilation with dignity, humility and respect.

The voters are the ultimate arbiters and they have passed judgment on issues of relevance in the campaign. Let us reach out and seek to close ranks as soon as possible. To those who wanted change and did not succeed, I say to you ‘the people have spoken’ The will of the voters has been determined! Please be gracious in defeat and let us move on with the building of our nation.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the margins of victory in most constituencies have been relatively large. It rules out any ambiguity as to the intention of voters. Dominicans today voted for a return of the Dominica Labour Party to office. That is a reality that cannot be denied and is not worthy of challenge! It therefore behooves us all to accept the result, as the will and wish of the country, and to curtail partisan, abusive and empty rhetoric.

As Prime Minister Designate, I resume normal work tomorrow. I hope to be in a position to name my new-look Cabinet of ministers by Monday, the 28th day of December, so we can start the New Year with a sense of direction and purpose. Accordingly, I urge citizens to embrace the results of this election. Also, to make the necessary transition to the Christmas and yuletide season, so we can welcome relatives and friends to our shores in the spirit of peace, love and harmony.

I therefore take this opportunity to thank you once again for returning the Dominica Labour Party to office. We take your new mandate seriously, and shall endeavor not to disappoint. It is therefore not too early for me to wish one and all, God’s richest blessings in the season ahead; as we look forward to a bright and prosperous 2010.

May God bless us all! May God bless our nature isle Dominica. Once again, Dominica, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Good night!! Regards

I would like to give a big congratulations to Prime Minister Skerrit. I have met Prim Minister Skerrit and could quickly tell he is a good man with a good heart in support of his fellow Dominicans. I’m back him all the way. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” -Proverbs 3:5-6

I hope Mr. Skerrit is very happy now that he got the mandate from Dominicans. Apparently the majority wasn’t enough for him so he needs a clear mandate. Mr. Skerrit seems to be a very different person from how he was when he first came into office. I hope Dominicans do not regret making the choice they made cuz there is no turning back the hands of time.

And to all those who keep saying the election was free and fair and that people voted for who they wanted, that is so not true and everybody knows it. Everybody knows that DLP bought nearly all the votes. If they didn’t, they know Dominicans will not vote for them. If the DLP worked so hard in the 9 1/2 years they were in office there would be no need to buy votes. So let’s wait and see what happens in the 5 years they have been given. I guess he will do nothing and then come and ask the electorate for another 5 years.

SOUFRIERE CONSTITUENCY DOES NOT REPRESENT THE SOUFRIERE PEOPLE IN IT’S ENTIRETY.

CONGRATS TO THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE DLP.
CHANGE IS NOT SEEN OVERNIGHT BUT INSTEAD OVERTIME. I AM REALLY THRILLED THAT THE DLP WAS GIVEN ANOTHER TERM IN OFFICE I THINK THEY CAN REALLY HELP THE D/CA PEOPLE.
THERE IS ALREADY EVIDENCE OF IMPROVEMENT (HOWEVER SMALL) FROM THEIR LAST TERM, SO YES I STRONGLY BELIEVE THERE IS GREAT THINGS TO COME BUT THEY WILL NEED THE CONTINUE SUPPORT AND CONFIDENCE OF THE PEOPLE.
NOT T TO THE UWPites, ‘ HAVE U EVER HEARD OF A TOTALLY HONEST POLITICIAN? EVEN THE GREAT NELSON MANADELA WAS FLAWED.’ SO STOP PICKING ON THE FLAWS OF THE DLP BECAUSE THE UWP HAS FLAWS AS WELL.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, NO MATTER THE FLAW OF THE POLITICIAN U HAVE TO ASK URSELF ‘ IS THAT POLITICIAN DOING RIGHT BY THE COUNTRY?’ IN THE DLP CASE THE ANSWER IS YES.
    AGAIN CONGRATS

  11. December 21, 2009

What? You UWPites still havent learnt? Dominicans are fed up with this maypwe business. That’s what brought about the UWP’s poor performance at the polls. You all kept shouting and screaming while the DLP was working hard and minding their business to see how to win the elections. So stay screaming, shouting, cursing and jetaying pawol, and see where it will take you.

Also, you need to do something about the Custom. Its a shame that the customs officers are robbing the poor people at the port. Please let this be your first agenda in January.

    Again Congrats.

Well done Dominicans. That was the best and only choice presented to the people, the parties never had a plan for nation building, the only plan they had was hate, bitterness, greed and jealousy, just to get at one person. That is why the people rejected that type of old time politics and emabraced a new change to move DA forward.

God is the only power that put and remove political leaders by the will of the people Daniel 2 and 4, Romans 13:1-5. The 80’s belonged to freedom, part of the 90’s uwp, now God has put labour in 2000 until, and that might be a long time to stay in until God is ready to remove labour, and it does not appear that UWP will ever return to power. They need to appoint the young man from salisbury as leader, and allow him to select a gorup of young people to start rebuilding the party, without that, labour will be in power for the next 20 years. It does not look possible to slide from 18 seats to opposition in 5 years, they are more likely to take all in 2015, if UWP do no regroup and change their old politics of hate and jealousy. Dominicans for 10 years have rejected it, and they will continue to do so. Eddie only has 8% popularity support in the country, so he is a total waste of time to reclaim his party and expect to win at age 90 years, 2020 when uwp might have a chance.

I’m sorry to see a stolen election in Dominica…. I guess if more people like me could make a decsion things could have been different. Wake up UWP and Freedom. Give us a better alternative cause we are desperatly looking for one.

U knows, I am very disappointed in the Skerrit administration. There is this saying that those who are in the fire will feel the heat. Well Dominicans living abroad are not in the fire, they are not feelin the heat. Y in God’s name did they bring down fellow domincan’s abroad to vote? Isn”t there enough projects in Dominica for that money to be used on? Imagine 2 flights from NY. Dat must have cost a fortune. 1 from Miami. many from the other islands. Boats. Come on. There is this guy from my constituency who came down after 19 years. This guy doesnt care about our country. After 19 yrs? After all, these are the persons who gave those votes to the Labor party. NOT the real Dominicans who actually live there and knkow exactly what’s going on. I am extremely disappointed indeed. This win was not won fairly. But u know wat? WAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND. GOD DOESN’T LIKE UGLY. Hon. Skerrit loves power. He has it. I wish him well inspite of all of this. By the way, if he really believed in having a peaceful christmas, he should have left elections for after the christmas season. not immediately before. I am very worried about my dear Dominica
