Sabaroche strikes back

Herbert Sabaroche

Former education minister Herbert Sabaroche has stepped up his campaign against the current education minister Peter St Jean, after suggesting that St Jean can be considered Dominica’s  worst minister of education.

The minister has dismissed that claim in a brief response, telling DNO that it was “the exact opposite”.

St Jean said it was “evident for all to see that at this time in the history of Dominica, education has never been on a high as it is at this time in the history of Dominica”.

Sabaroche has since hit back, contending that Minister St Jean “seemed not to be learning on the job even if we know that he is neither fully qualified as an educator or in management and has limited policy management, implementation and evaluation experiences”.

According to Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) official Sabaroche, the Minister continues to grapple with critical challenges that need to be addressed at almost every level.

He also claims that St Jean is not “maximizing the use of the wealth of professional and experienced human resource capacity within the ministry and elsewhere”.

Referring to his own stint as education minister, DFP’s Herbert Sabaroche told DNO that “both deceased PM Roosevelt Douglass and Pierre Charles proclaimed to the nation that the then Minister Herbert Sabaroche was one of their best Minister (Education and then Health)”.

He was responding to Minister St Jean’s suggestion that he Sabaroche should “compare the performance of the government of Dominica and the minister of education against that which he did when he served”.

J DT Drigo you left out why Sabie refused ‘because he would not accept a ministry and money under the table’ He always cherishes his integrity under all circumstances and he cannot be purchased. Many of us know that Sabie continues to make his contribution to education and Training from which the ministry benefits financially and otherwise every time he is called upon to assist.

What are the qualifications of the Minister of Education? Education Ministers should be Master’s or Phd holders in fields related to education and management or even HRM! What has the present minister done that to be campaigning left right and center! Dominicans are maybe asleeeep for a long long time , that is why they do not demand answers from those ministers, they do not demand respect from these politicians! And to add insult to the injury, they just stomach, shot up legislations from non elected party supporters who speak on behalf of the ministers of Government!
If these ministers and politicians were elsewhere in the world, they would be walking in straight jackets and do what they were elected to do. They would have even resign under pressure especially when they have not been performing to the best of their abilities!
It must reach a point that these folks who walk around in suits and drive fancy vehicles, whilst the poor people who voted for them, be elected based on merit and not partisan politics. Just going on radio and tv and say alot of words doesnot cut it this rounds. The people want action! All these folks like is honor and power! The opposite is true, the people should be given the honor and power!
For a minister to come out and defend himself by putting down a former minister is a sign that this minister is on shaky grounds! Do not try to compare but please give them people performance after performance! When will one hear, these folks say: ” I promise to do this and that for the country i love, and if i do not achieve my goals i will so resign!” These are the kind of minister one is looking for in the 21st century!
Members of parliament and leaders of the state on a whole should remember: a little self evaluation is good for the mind! Self evaluation will keep leaders humble and simple , not to go after money, fame, pleasure, and all the material things! You are in politics to give it, not to win it or take it by any means necessary! let Jah be Praised

Shouldn’t this statement read: evident for all to see that ,in the history of Dominica, education has never been on a high as it is at this time…?

All ministers have their challenges at different times and in different forms. I think they all should grow up and stop competing with each other but rather try to work together to complement the system for the sake of Dominica. If one feels he is good at something why not offer your assistance to help the other.
Most ministers go into politics with very little experience and unqualified therefore I suggest that they don’t feel too big to go back to UWI, to do a course in the related field and get qualified. Politics is not just talk on the platform.

Sabie you said to the world in another forum, that you were asked by the Prime Minister after the 2005 elections to serve in his Cabinet and you refused. Why are you now complaining about education and the minister when you could have been part of or maybe head of a team to help improve education in our country? Sabie, do not let politics get the better of you. Remember your words “country first”. Take it easy Sabie; there will always be another opportunity to serve but it willl never happen while you are wraped up with your present political buddies. Free up youself and your talent and abilities for the good of our beloved country.

Brothers and sisters now is not the time to be pointing fingers at each other. It has been established that there is something seriously wrong with the education system in Dominica. You all as good and concern citizens of this great nation have the opportunity to arrest that problem and bring back education to the level it once was. The students of today need positive role models in their lives. Giving gifts and other material things is not enough. If you as parents and teachers fail to play that role, then you have failed them and yourselves. I urge the members government, law enforcement officials, fire officers, officials in the medical field, business leaders, the clergy, to name a few to support the parents and teachers in their challenging task of raising and educating the young kids. These kids given the opportunity will be the leaders of tomorrow. Why? Because you laid the foundation on which they built their success.

Crazy. Sabaroche was minister what?.12, 15 years ago? Were drugs, divorce, pornography, homosexuality, internet, technology as rampant then?
Petter’s competence could be inadequate, make believe of whatever, but the challenges are far worse today than then.
Can anyone really come up with the perfect solution?
Rather than fight over who is better or worse why don’t we come together for the sake of our youth? ‘Cuz it’s not about public policy management skills alone, it’s about lack of role models, disappearing moral values, broken homes, teen parents, poverty in a materialistic consumer driven world and the list goes on…

Ever sat and wondered why now with computers and technology our children are struggling to learn, read, excel at maths, unlike we who had to got the library and write notes and had no printers?

Tell these politicians to cut the crap.

Herbert Saborouche just cannot compare his performance with that of Mr. St. Jean. Sabarouche cannot show any new development that he initiated while he was Minister of Education.

I can say categorically Mr St. Jean is a much better Minister than Saborouche. I am in a position to state clearly that Saborouche while he was Minister of Education made absolutely no meaningful contribution in Cabinet he always sat as a Moo Moo he could not even present a Cabinet paper.

It is really true that failed persons speak the loudest and make the most noise. Check Athie failied individual. Sabie, failed individual.

    July 19, 2012

….but if you Mr.Sabaroche is so qualified, you would know the personnel in the Ministry, esp. the Permanent Sec and education officers, are the ones running the Ministry. The Minister is merely an overseer, he depends on the advice of those whom her met and leaves in the Minister, after his five years is over. Granted he may have some ideas to share as well, but the acceptance of these ideas would lie with the “implementors”.

One cannot argue that sabbie was a good min. of ed., after all, he is an education professional, i do agree with the fact where he said that st.jean dosnt grab the skills of professionals and human resource capabilities within his ministry and elsewhere, but i believe with the little resources that peter has and with expertise he has, staff wise, he is doing a good job, as a matter of fact he is more of a people person than sabbie, he is more gentlemanly than sabbie can ever be, but i still believe in the interest of education and country, both gentlemen should stop the quarrel, sabbie must be missing the big chair…. relax sabbie

There is no doubt that Sabaroche was a very competent Minister both in education and in Health. Minister Petter St Jean, while he is trying, has to accept the fact that under his charge(the Dominican Secondary Schools) especially the GOVERNMENT OWNED SECONDARY SCHOOLS are graduating illiterates. It is not TOTALLY St Jean’s fault, but to get involved in a war of words with Sabaroche,Petter will be humiliated, since as i posted a few days ago, presently drug abuse at the secondary schools in particular is on the increase, weapons use,xxx obscene languages are use with panache, bullying, the insult at principals, teachers, students, the disturbance of teachers classes.Out of a 50 minutes period 20 or sometimes 25minutes have to be used to get students to settle, and the list goes on.Talk about not reading? OMG!
POOR PETTER and his incompetent team of non performers has to understand and acceptthat under their charge everything has been destroyed. ALL INSTITUTIONS,and the Schools (Government Owned) are no exception!
DREAM PETTER DREAM! In the meantime we are heading down the valley.
My advise to you is to review this Education Act, and dismiss or demote those Principals who cannot take charge of their Schools. Too many of them are able to fool you all with a lot of “Par wol”,and they are afraid of showing that they are leaders.THEY HIDE WITHIN the confines of their offices from 8-1.00pm,like chickens while ‘rogues’ are wrecking havoc with the system, and polluting other well manned people’s children.
MANY SENIOR TEACHERS DO A BETTER JOB THAN SOME of these weak principals. SHAME ON THEM!
