An “extremely important” meeting planned for Wednesday between religious and political leaders on island to chart a way forward following disturbances in the community of Salisbury was postponed to Monday.
The meeting, which was organized by Bishop of the Diocese of Roseau, His Lordship Gabriel Malzaire and was expected to take place at his office in Roseau, did not materialize because Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, schedule could not be cleared for him to attend. DNO was reliably informed that a call was received from a government official relaying such information.
Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) and Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, who was also part of the meeting, said time was given for the Prime Minister to clear his schedule.
“The Prime Minister, I gather, is a busy man and I understood that some efforts were made for him to clear his schedule to be available for the meeting yesterday morning that did not happen and so the persons who had assembled for the meeting yesterday felt it was in the best public interest to allow for some time for the Prime Minister to clear his schedule so he could be available,” he said on privately owned Q95 on Thursday morning.
The viewing and funeral of the late former President Dr. Nicholas Liverpool were also taken into consideration in setting up the new date. The former President will be buried on Friday.
“So the new date that is being set in the hope that we can have that engagement is on Monday next week and those of us who were assembled yesterday have made ourselves available for that meeting on Monday,” Linton said.
He said the meeting was of extreme importance.
“I think it is extremely important because so far not much attention has been given to the very important matter of the civil liberties of the people of Salisbury and the people of Dominica by extension,” he noted.
He said somehow the focus has been on what is legal and what is not.
“But at the end of the day, more important than all of that, is that people have a right to protest in the context of their participation in this democracy,” he said, adding that all the people were asking for was that attention be given to their farm access roads.
“And instead of responding to that concern in a humane and caring manner, the government decided that a military response to put the people under manners and let them know who is the boss, before anybody from the government can come and speak to them,” Linton stated.
Parliamentary representative for Salisbury, Hector John and Linton were some of those who had assembled for the meeting.
Meantime the UWP leader is also shooting down claims that his party is responsible for the protest action in Salisbury.
“Is that the nonsense that we have been reduced to in Dominica? So all of a sudden, people no longer feel anything if they are not directed by a political party?” he noted.
On May 11 residents of the community blocked the main highway protesting poor feeder road conditions. The road was eventually cleared by the police using tear gas. On June 11 there was another round of confrontation between the police and residents when the police swooped into the community and arrested six for allegedly taking part in the first protest. They appeared in court earlier this week.
The events have been described as a “breakdown of law and order” by the Police Chief, Daniel Carbon.
Let me see if I understand properly. The LOP planned a meeting not knowing the PM schedule although this week everyone in the world knew the government was planning the State Funeral for an exceptional and distinguished man, the Late President Dr. Liverpool; they really expected the Prime Minister to drop everything and come to a meeting planned by the LOP? Why that week?
If I recall when the PM called for a meeting with the rioters the MP said they were not coming but wanted the PM team to come to Salisbury in the middle of a riot. SMH.
The LOP wants to be PM but he has no idea the responsibility of that office or protocol. Did he expect that a problem the UWP caused that the PM should drop everything and rush to a meeting with him? No matter what his schedule is?
I hope a solution can be reached but when I hear the UWP take on the protest at the UN, I am not sure. Were there any farmers at the meeting, after all it is a farmer’s protest, the want us to believe.

Parry, I would remind Dominicans, where as the Freedom Party was responsible for the alleged downfall of the DLP, the UWP, because one of its members is the parliamentary representative of Salisbury, does not mean the Party is responsible for the protest actions by the people who have been begging for years for the repair of their roads. These protests have been a people thing. Parry should also remind Dominicans, the Freedom Party led by Miss Charles, who later replaced Mr. John of the DLP as Prime Minister, was born after a protest action at the parliament house on high street. It started as Freedom Fighters, then changed to Freedom Party. However, the UWP support of the people of Salisbury is not political, just a case for good governance.
I fail to see Mr Malzaire’s claim-to-fame or expertise on the subject matter, to make me hopeful that something meaningful may come out of the meeting. The organisation over which Mr Malzaire presides is seriously lacking in conflict resolution and participatory leadership. The church’s hands are filled with behavioural challenges among the flock, to make it ineffective as a leader in civil matters.
Our blessed and most precious Supreme Leader has no need to meet with those who planned, organized, orchestrated and attempted to overthrow his Government. It was quite enough to show these power-hungry losers in opposition that any attempt to disrupt the lives of Labourites and other law-abiding Citizens in their unlawful quest for power will be dealt with swiftly and effectively. Are these the only feeder roads in Dominica? I am certain there are others in D/ca which also need attention and those people are not protesting. I would think that all villages have feeder roads and are in dire need of repairs.

Some people in Dominica will never complain, because they are the ones who prefer accept some free food, like flour, rice and sugar. The Commissioner of Police and Minister Austrie recently talked about congratulating the police, because people could have died, during the unrest in Salisbury, had they not used a level of restrain. As far as I am concerned, the person who deserves to be complemented for his restrain is Hon Lennox Linton. He is the leader of the opposition, he has strong support in two major constituencies, namely, Marigot, in the north where the main airport is located and Salisbury in the west, one of the main thoroughfare to the city of Roseau. He is accused of lacking leadership qualities and hot headed. If Mr. Linton was to call on his supporters in those constituencies to block roads and create civil unrest, do we have sufficient police to counter attack. Skeritt, Blackmoore, Regie and the Commissioner can talk as much as they want, if Mr. Linton wants to bring down the Government to its knees, as leader of the opposition, he has the power.

If I had the opportunity to advise Spags, and Lennox, I would suggest that they do not sit in any forum which includes any so called religious leader, especially, the likes of a Malzaire, because Malzaire is a puppet of Skerrit, bought and paid for with five ($500,000.00) hundred thousand dollars of the poor bleeding hungry, and sick people of the country!

There isn’t much to talk about, since all of the existing problems in the village are know to everyone; Skerrit of all persons knows the problem.

Without all of that apparent attitude of hatred and the vague negativity, I would agree with you in a small way; in that I do not understand why the Bishop must be involved in this social conflict–which definitely has a lot to do with the political functions in Dominica.
I am thinking that both–leaders of Government and that of the Opposite–should be able to meet through a discrete manner to talk about the “malfunctions” of our society in Dominica, pertain to Rules and Laws–which is the responsibility of Government– why do they need the interference of the Bishop?
I mean that if Government and Opposition cannot deals with things and to settle the conflicts of things–are we not in deep water here?
The Bishop’s work belong in the church–where he and his priedts have all the privilege to counsel the people, pertaining to Love and its attitude and conducts–their Life from God.

The Bishop has compromised his credibility. He has publicly shown bias. He should not be mediating anything. Secondly the opposition leader and Skeritt have enough time to meet in parliament. Skeritt needs to meet with the people of Salisbury and work things out. Meeting with the opposition leader gives it the impression that the opposition was instigating the DEMONSTRATION which is contrary to what Mr. Linton is saying. If they were, then UWP should own it. There is nothing wrong in fightinng for you rights. When no one listen to yiur plea you have to take extreme measures to be heard. PM ego and insecurities are too large and I do not expect that kind of humility. The last time there was such meeting to have clean campaign we all know what happened the very next day. I have no respect for Bishop of Roseau. After 15 years the only healing that Dominica needs is the departure of Skeritt. His actions have largely caused such deep divisions.
