Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party and candidate for the Salybia constituency, Claudius Sanford, has described as humorous, some statements made by political leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, at a meeting in Bataca on Thursday night.
Skerrit said Sanford was rejected for leadership in the UWP because of his “selfish ways” and that he was not interested in the Kalinago people.
“It’s just so funny,” Sanford told DNO between chuckles. “This is the darkest lie coming from the deepest pit of hell.”
According to Skerrit, Sanford was involved in a leadership struggle with leader UWP, Lennox Linton, in 2013 and Sanford was interested in meeting him.
“You know his leadership struggles with Lennox Linton in 2013 and he send somebody to say he want to talk to me. I told him personally I am not interested in talking to Claudius Sanford because Claudius Sanford is not interested in the Kalinago People,” Skerrit said. “He is not interested in you the Kalinago people, he is not interested in it. He is a selfish person and you know that and that is why we will reject him again on December 8th.”
According to Skerrit, Sanford, who is a lecturer at the Dominica State College (DSC), has not provided any assistance to his fellow Kalinago brothers or sisters either financially or with their school work.
But Sanford said he was never in a leadership struggle with Linton.
He stated that both he and Linton were nominated to lead the UWP and Linton won.
“It was a democratic process,” he said. “That’s how we do it in the UWP, open and democratic.”
On the matter of him being “selfish,” Sanford said that he has played his part in the Kalinago Territory.
“My record is clear,” he said. “My work is well known in the Kalinago Territory. I have given all my life to the education and the upliftment of the Kalinago people at the primary, secondary and at the college level. I have spent several of my years doing extra lessons in mathematics especially to the high school students.”
He stated that he has been part of several groups, has been a sports coach, has sponsored several cricket leagues and coached several national players.
“So it seems that is every five years I become the topic of discussion for Roosevelt Skerrit and I am saying to him today that he must stop his lies and try to redeem himself from all this devilish works that he is attempting to do in the Kalinago Territory,” he noted.
Sanford is also challenging the DLP candidate for the Salybia Constituency, Casius Darroux, to make known his accomplishments before he went away to study.
