UWP brushes off Chronicle claim as ‘outright lie’

Prevost said The Chronicle was informed that the UWP received invitation to the cocktail late
Prevost said The Chronicle was informed that the UWP received invitation to the cocktail late

The United Workers Party (UWP) has described parts of a front page story by the The Chronicle newspaper as a blatant lie and an attempt to score cheap political points.

The story, “UWP snubs China,” quoted unnamed guests as giving the UWP a “severe tongue lashing” for its no-show at a recent cocktail reception at the new State House commemorating the 10th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Dominica.

The paper went on to say there was “universal condemnation of the apparent immature act by the leadership of the UWP.”

It reported that attempts were made “to contact leaders of the UWP but none was willing to go on record as to why the entire parliamentary group and other leading UWP officials boycotted the state function.”

But addressing a press conference on Tuesday morning, MP for Roseau, Norris Prevost, dismissed the claim as untrue.

“That is an outright lie,” he said.

According to Prevost, he was contacted on Monday, March 24 by a Chronicle reporter who informed him that there were comments at the cocktail, which took place on Saturday, March 22, about the UWP’s non appearance at the event.

He said he informed the reporter that he would investigate the matter by contacting his UWP colleagues. He went on to say he contacted the reporter on Tuesday, March 25 and said the UWP was unable to attend the function because of late invitations.

“This information was availabe to The Chronicle before they went to print,” he insisted.

The UWP is of the opinion the matter was not treated with importance by the government.

“Our understanding is that Mr. Skerrit and his government did not treat this event with the importance it deserved, and as a result, all the invitations were sent out embarrassingly late,” the party’s political leader said during Tuesday’s press conference.

The UWP also claimed that while invitations to the cocktail carried a ministry of foreign affairs stamp dated February 19 2014, it was delivered to the party’s office one month later.

“As a result most of the invitees from the UWP team in parliament actually received their invitations after the event,” the party said. “The others received theirs on the day before the event.”

The UWP added that it was public knowledge that members were committed to a “heavily advertised” national sporting engagement in Trafalgar on March 22, the very evening of the reception.

The UWP is now calling for an apology and explanation from the ministry of foreign affairs to the People’s Republic Of China “outlining the truths and facts of the matter.”

“The evidence therefore suggests that the late delivery of invitations was deliberate and calculated to embarrass the UWP with precisely the the kind of ridicule and criticism that has surfaced so far from the advocates and media operatives of the DLP,” the party said.

The party also noted that there will be no drastic change in foreign policy if elected to office but focus will be on trade, rather “than an obsession with aid.”

Meanwhile when DNO contacted The Chronicle on its story, editor Schyler Esprit said she had no comment.

Like I have mentioned before I am neither Blue Green nor Red; but I am Dominican to the bone and even though I now reside in the US it does not make me less Dominican. I do not know if Mr. Prevost got his invitation late; but these things do happen and while I am not saying that the DLP or whoever was responsible should have made sure that he got it on time, if as he said he got it the day before he could have made an attempt to attend. The problem I am having in believing anything the UWP says is because of what they have stated before “we (UWP) will boycott just about any and everything they (DLP) does”. Hector John did not mince words when the President Hon. Charles Saverin was sworn in, in fact he also had a problem when the last president took office..he and Eddo spewed a lot of trash and now they are saying they were invited late…scan and publish the date and time that you received the invitation and just maybe we can tell who is speaking the truth..just last week Prevost showed up at a function uninvited. Even if you got the invitation late you could have made an attempt to attend, and if you couldn’t attend you as the pal rep could have sent a representative. Until then stop spewing so much trash….

I don’t have any political affiliation and I think Dominica would probably do well with some change. But I am just tired of UWP boycotting events. I don’t get it. Members of the party attend functions not invited to, but refuse to attend functions of late invitation. I give up. Late invitation or not send a representative. What’s at stake? What exactly do you get from boycotting events? Very petty.

If I was a member of the UWP I would show up at every single function; once I was supposed to be there . Then, I would introduce myself to all the Dominicans, Chinese, Venezulans,Americans, who ever they are at those functions and tell them to Look out for me in the Next Government because we will be in Power after the next election. I would not avoid the Presence of the PM and his Government. In other words the UWP are throwing away oppertunities if they keep boycuttiing functions. They must learn to use every oppertunity to their advantage turn every Negative to positives >>>> UWP need some youth to help them in there Campaign if the really want to come back in power.

I spent several years abroad before returning to DA 7 years ago. When I was away I had the opportunity to live and work in several countries around the world. As much as I love my place of birth I must confess that I am very appalled at the passivity of my countrymen when it comes to wrong/right. I am not for or against any political party because politics has ruined our beloved country.
Let me give you a few examples of what I think is grossly wrong. Why is it that the Chinese retailers do not pay any VAT, I say that because they never give you a receipt. I once insisted on getting a receipt, the proprietor wrote the details on a slip of paper, no VAT registered on the receipt. Why is the rest of the country who are obligated to pay VAT do not protest vociferously and withhold VAT payments.
The PM has a Cabinet who are supposedly there to help govern the country yet everything of major importance is about the PM. A few days ago, he was on the news talking about the Intensive Care Unit at PMH. He stated that “I was the one who initiated improvements the unit” so what the hell do we need a Minister of Health for? Recently a mother called the PM late at night seeking financial help for a new born baby who needed to be flown off island for medical care, again I ask where is the Minister of Health or Social Services in this matter. A few months ago in Grand Bay there we have the PM resenting a check for some road building in the area, again I ask where is the Public Works Minister and the Para Rep for the area? The point I am trying to make is that it is always about the PM so why do we have a Cabinet, dispense with that farce as they have no role/power, no say and save the country the cost of their expensive salaries. This is a constant and I see no mention of this in the news media, its a one man show reminiscent of the countries we have closest ties to: China, Cuba, Venezuela, Morocco check the political makeup of these countries. I remember the PM saying in parliament that Dominicans have too much freedom, this statement has received with the usual timidity, again, compared to the countries I listed above, yes we have too much freedom

It’s called leadership. Until you get proof that the Chinese are not paying the vat you should stop talking. In the New York everybody pays a sales tax yet if you go to some Chinese establishments it appears that no tax is added onto the price of your purchase. I simply refuse to believe that they do not pay the sales tax to the government. If you have proof they don’t please let me know?

      • April 5, 2014

Leadership? clearly you have no clue about leadership as one of the main pillars of leadership is the art of DELEGATING. that means assigning tasks to individuals and holding them accountable for the fulfillment of said tasks.
The PM knows that by always being in the spotlight adds to the notion that people don’t vote for a para rep, instead they vote for Skerritt

Prevost and that “BOYCOTT UWP”, do you think that we the people believe your story?! You have made it very clear that the UWP will not participate in any event with the President, you have criticized the Dominica State House in the worse manner so we all know that you did not want to be there.. So why come now with your lies, is it because you realize that it definitely showed the world that you had snubbed the Chinese government.

A couple weeks ago, Prevost was not invited to a function that the government had in reference to Geothermal Energy. He knew so in advance and yet he bullied his way to that event. Here now he was given an invitation to attend at the Stare House and he and his Boycott UWP did not attend claiming it was a late invitation! Come on. Stop playi those childish tricks

It appears that UWP always boycott ceremonies. They should be named, “The Party that loves to boycott important functions.” It would make a good calypso song without mentioning names and not having to fear being sued. They are projecting their true colors. Can you all not cooperate and unite for once?
Hector stated that he received information about the workshop late. Provost stated that he got the invitation late. It appears to be a habitual excuse. Your actions are conspicuous that you do not care and do not support the PM and the State House.
Think of this also, Dominican residents. What if you were to win the election what would you do with the State House? Your attitude is showing and childish. They are acting more than children than children. Even children would not refuse an invitation. They would be too eager to attend celebrations and to be in the midst of it.
You are digging your grave and your demise. Voting for such a Party will be disastrous to also the unity and peace of Dominica and among nationals. They are not interested in unity and peace. If this is what they are aiming for and want, vote for them at your own peril.

Does it really make sense to join Skerrit and the DLP in celebrate the so called 10th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Dominica, when NO ONE knows what is on that MOU? What if later we get to know that part of the MOU is for China to legally take possession of parts of Roseau and Portsmouth and have us fenced out? What if part of the MOU requires a Chinese to be the president or PM of Dominica within the next 10 years?
UWP should demand that the MOU be made available to the public before they celebrate anything. Can we trust Skerrit? Do we know what became of the much talked about ‘Bird Island” which was the dream of Rosie Douglas? Is that not the same administration that hired and signed a very controversial contract of $96,000.00 with Charles Wong?
Skerrit is not a transparent leader and therefore to be part of any celebration organized by Skerrit, all should know what he signed on our behalf. Forget about the late invitation UWP received. UWP should just flat out demand a copy of the MOU as a condition to celebrate anything Skerrit is involved in.

Parry, I would tell the Management of the New Chronicle that in resent times, it appears to be on a partisan role. The Chronicle was known to be a paper which was unbiased and news trustworthy. In my opinion, their has been a significant shift to the DLP. Case in point, the replacement of Jos Shaw with Vigilante. According to Mr. Lennox Linton, there was no consultation with the UWP, the caption,”UWP snubs China,” in blue, speaks for itself.

Lest we forget. Where was the function held? People get smart. Where was he function held? At the brand new spanking state house complex. The first official function there with President Charles as resident host. Now have we forgotten the UWP’s position on the State House? Have they changed their position? If they have, have that fact been made public? So here I am reading some very politically, lame duck, weak dribbles fronting as excuses trying to fend off negative public criticisms. No matter how well packaged the media briefing is on the matter, the fact is the UWP is on the public record as being totally against the State House Project and the President of Dominica. Al they had to do was to remind us of their position to boycott every function where the President is present. The truthis the only time I expect to see the UWP in an official capacity at the State House is for the commissioning of Dominica’s brand new home for the Dominican arts. “Under a UWP government, no President will ever live in that building” Dominicans we have not forgotten that famous quote, have we? By the way, the UWP is very good at explaining itself away whenever it gets mud on its face. They know how to use words. But I am reminded of a gentleman who once said “the biggest crooks in he world know how to spin issues. They speak well, able to convince many and wander off in gest knowing fully well that the results of their actions was not earned decently.

    • For Richer Or Poorer
      April 2, 2014

Very well said Ronald. The function was indeed held at our sparkling brand new State House. I mean the people wanted to play their ball game that they say was wildly publicized and was not interested in Diplomatic Ties between Dominica and China.

We know that and they know we know that. They want our brand new State House to be a home for the Arts? Their words are coming and bite them where the sun does not shine.

It would be interesting to know when they planned their game whether they already knew when the event was taking place even if invitations were not yet out. I mean they as the government in waiting must have surely known about the approaching 10th Anniversary even not the day the event would take place. They could have found out If they were interested, what would Dominica be doing to mark this important milestone in our history.

What they didn’t expect is the backlash from Dominicans and maybe from members of their own party. We are smart people and we know what is best for our country, Our relationship with China is good or us.

They told us over and over and over and over that Dominica does not need a State House; they even had a special derogatory name for it; with posters around the country; we remember; they have showed us how they feel about our relationship with China; so why now having a press conference to say what? Even to complain that you wanted to be invited so you would say that even when invited you would not go?

Well by all reports the Opposition Members in Parliament were invited and they did not go, so live with it. Be proud of your actions if you believe you were doing the right thing and we Dominicans will be your judge to see if you are fit to represent us, We the public seems to understands you better than you understand yourselves.

We are very proud of our State House where our President lives and where some other government offices will be housed; we are proud of Our Government, we are proud of our friendship and diplomatic ties with China.

We are proud of our country and our caring government and the good job they are doing and we want them in office for at least another term. The UWP Team not ready yet.

Wow. let us be honest whether you support UWP or Labour, that is one beautiful State House, when driving on Victoria Street. It certainly makes almost all Dominicans proud.

Thanks to the Government and People of China and our own Government. Well Done!! Congratulations on the 10th Anniversary of Diplomatic Ties.

    (1) those who want the election very soon because according to them”They are losing grounds too rapidly”
    (2) Those who are telling their master Skerrit “Master let us complete a few projects first, because it will most likely inveigle the electorate, and this may redound to our advantage”
    (3) The THIRD SIDE IS ME (% himself) who is telling Skerrit My PRIME MINISTER, whether you call the election now or next year you WILL LOSE. I think the people’s minds are made up, and they want to extricate themselves from the brutal clutches of a tyrannical gang posing as a government.

“Our understanding is that Mr. Skerrit and his government did not treat this event with the importance it deserved, and as a result, all the invitations were sent out embarrassingly late,” the party said during Tuesday’s press conference.

So if Prevost said that ALL the invitatiosn were sent out “embarassingly late” why did they take it personally as an affront to them?

Then again, it is kinda of common practice, island time business that they are always late- so that excuse is LAME, especialy since they knew about the event and its importance.

UWP too like to pass blame!

That is sufficient time to have some to be attend the function and others continue with their other activity. UWP are false pretenders they are clearly in opposition of diplomatic relations with China and their past actions are evident of that. To now claim that there will be no drastic change in diplomatic relations with China is nothing but a farce!

are you for real – he just made them look bad.

he said that all the invites went out late – so it wasnt a “let’s get the UWP” business. it was just lateness and poor organising on their parts.

furthermore, that’s a weak excuse by the UWP especially since they knew about the event in advance..to pretend to not know wouldnt serve any purpose.

so yes, they deliberately SNUBBED China. not 1 representative?

and you guys talk about havign the interest of Dominica at hand, yet they never show up where they are paid to go, nor invited to.

but when they are not invited – they show up and show their bad manners and make a stink

Make up your frigging minds already!

what the hell change when they keep running around in the same curcle?

@hmm, Is it that you deliberately pretended to have no understanding or you just want to mislead people? Take another look at what you said: “he said that all the invites went out late – so it wasnt a “let’s get the UWP” business. it was just lateness and poor organising on their parts.” However, you deliberately left out this part which shows the malice of the DLP:
“The UWP also claimed that while invitations to the cocktail carried a ministry of foreign affairs stamp dated February 19 2014, it was delivered to the party’s office one month later.”
How could you stamp invitations on Feb. 19 2014, using your ministry stamp and forgot to deliver it for a month? Does that even make sense to a fool let alone wise educated men? It is Skerrit and his DLP cheap way of trying to score political points especially when all Dominicans knew team UWP was going to be involved in a sporting event on that same night. Tell Skerrit to stop winning by default and come clean.

      April 1, 2014

No one is making the opposition look bad. They do that all by themselves time and time again.

Who among us would not believe they would have boycotted the event? What they should have done would be to surprise us. But again, why would they want to go to the State House? What conversion would they really have?

Would they be able to thank the Chinese Government Representatives? Would they be able to admire the State House? Praise the Government? I mean it would have been very uncomfortable. So they decided to play ball instead and plan a response which they know we would not buy, but they would say it anyway. I bet some wanted to go but they had to boycott the way they boycotted parliament.

After all they have had plenty to say, it would be very hard to eat crow and go and rob shoulders at such a Special Occasion. We already heard them tell us when Team Dominica wins the election the State House will be turned into something else?

Their words are simply coming back to haunt them. We will accept no excuses. They must realize the error they have made and wanting to make some lame excuse. Too late is the cry.

I mean when they past by they must be cursing themselves under their breath and too ashamed to use the State House as a photo background. Too bad they cannot show us that they are proud Dominicans and happy we have our own World Class State House.

Many Dominican’s treat the recent disrespect of the Opposition UWP by the DLP as ok. They make up lame excuses about why a late invitation is acceptable in the cases of Hector’s absence at a recent signing ceremony and the above story. They make light of the incident with Honorable Norris Prevost. If they spend a little time looking at the glaring truth then I think that they would be able to be empathetic to these men. It is utter disrespect the way the opposition is treated in this country and if the men in power can dismiss men who seek to bring change in a meaningful way to this country what would they do to you? How do they view the average Joe? In cases like invitation Everyone should be informed early enough to ensure that they are properly prepared and the opposition is no exception. We are starting to lose our humanity in the face of politics. In a democratic country; dictatorship looms

        April 1, 2014

It is clear that these events are planned way in advance. I know this is Caribbean and people are usually tardy, but you want to tell me an invitation of that nature being given to representative literally 1 day before the event is sufficient time? Seriously, put the politics aside and think of this. I was disgusted with UWP for staying out of the House of Assembly for an extended time even if they were treated unfairly, but this late invitation definitely justify them not attending. Furthermore, you think some of the ministers and senators were waiting at the UWP office for the invitation? Forget some of them don’t live in Roseau? Come on people be reasonable for once. Is either incompetent planning or a deliberate attempt to keep UWP out, and I believe it’s both.

So this is all about DLP and UWP and not the People of Dominica? WOW!
What is this ??? it sounds like Someone (a Kid) is either mad they did not get to go to a birthday party or someone Justifying why they did not invite the other to the birthday party, or why they did not want someone to attend the birthday party and it is making Major news in Dominica … Also In recent news with Mr. provost, I read where he was turned away from attending the “Thermal energy conference” It’s a bunch of BS …The problem with this is that the Dominican people get sucked into this mess over and over instead of these two parties attending to the Citizens of Dominica Business highlighting what each think they will do a better job to lead Dominica for the next five years, they fight over “Spilled Milk” they really are not addressing real issues when they engage in this. I call it ” chit chat news”. It’s not important and we do not want any more of it DNO.
This is why the Dominican people need to demand having Debates between the parties or else that’s all we will get till election day beside the campaign speeches which has now come to their limits. Now we should turn to and new forum engaging the Parties in debates . It’s close to elections and the Youth of Dominica want real answers of how they are going to survive the fast pace changes that will affect us in our future . We want to hear about Education, Jobs for the improvement of the economy (our lively hood ) They should be talking about things like the International Airport, Health Care in Dominica ,Elderly Care for our people Agriculture and much more. Instead it’s a bunch of talk about things that do not even matter; none of which really makes either side really score political points. What points ??

Another Example of distraction is about the DLP construction /Building the New State House. It is there for any government. Do they want to break it down now ??? It looks so good and Dominica deserve it DLP did not do everything wrong. Let us not dismiss everything DLP did but highlight some good and build on it ((a word for UWP and the other parties) What The UWP should be thinking about is how they are going to pay back the $27,mil which they cannot avoid inheriting. With Great minds like My Thompson Fontaine this should be a breeze. This is not a Building of Lego blocks you can just pull out of the ground and say “Good buy Mr. Chinese) If UWP has to be the next Government they/it has to embrace all opportunity even now that they are not yet in office, to dealing with and interaction with all people Dominica does business with (our allies) namely Venezuela, china United States. England, France, everyone on the planet, even if they have to condemn some of those (for whatever reason) they do not want to do business with; yes they have to face the music.
Dominica deserve to have strong Leadership. We are fed up of little Lies, Big Lies, and those in between and all who tell them. Deception is even worse all this stuff needs to be uprooted from our leaders and Governments that lead us. The UWP should now concentrate on raising money to campaign for the upcoming elections if they want to lead Dominica again. The UWP should be spending time reaching out to the people of Dominica especially at home in Dominica those who are actually there on the ground to vote.. Yes those who are really feeling the pressure of the times. Every situation that comes up like this one is simply a distraction by both parties once they engage in this sort of interaction .

    • Dominicans Wake Up
      April 1, 2014

@Tyre hit de road…If you listened closely you’d have been hearing the position that the UWP has been taking on Education, Jobs for the improvement of the economy (our lively hood) the International Airport, Health Care in Dominica ,Elderly Care for our people Agriculture and much more. We all seek meaningful change yet we stand on the sidelines and look in without helping out. As a young person I see no opportunities with the DLP. They have changed the landscape of the country more than the lives of it’s people. I look around and feel the hopelessness of many. When will we own our own homes? When will we be car owners. The DLP has the ability to raise money and spend money. They don’t know how to make money and help others to do the same.

“Dominica Wake up.” I know what you are saying is true  about UWP addressing those issues I mentioned eariler. I am not saying that either party is not doing that but from some of these pttie reports is seem like some leaders are not changing and I say “SOME” they are the ones that are going to make things fail for what ever party they represent. What I am saying also is that it is a waste of time talking about some personal issues which are generated for what ever reason which do not benifit anyone, like an invitation to a meeting or an award Party. There are more impotant Issues to talk about. Instead for example, they need to use the same topic to tall the people how that will change in the future when they are in power ; Some of our leaders do not even know how to Turn a negative into positive. Those are the kind of leaders Dominica needs. They should tell us what they will do to change their behaviors … They need to follow Mr. Lenox linton. Do you ever here Mr. linton on the Radio answering to lettle pettie talk? NO ! Why not ? because he is more focosed now on the real issues that is what the others need to be doing for our people. This is how you really find out the true qualitties of our leaders. How dies one get back at someone or even want to get back at some one? If they shame you or did not recognize you and make you feel bad ? Yes, you announce it but you do not stoop down to the other person’s level. This is a great oppertunity for the person who is the Victim or the hurt person to say “look if I was on the other side this is how I would treat my fellow Dominicans . In other words going into a battle of Tit for Tat and trying to cus out the other party or side and make it become Major news for Days is not going to Do Dominica any good. That is what we want to here to make us gravitate to the party who honestly want change that is the change we want; and the party that will lead the next five years. We are fed up of that kind of behavior and the isseus should be talked about relentlessly instead of this kind of stuff; even after elections. Change is coming and Red or Blue is not really going to make a difference . What is going to make a difference is what we the Dominican People really want and we want it now.

I see your point(s). The UWP simply should have just ignore the DLP’s childish games and not feed into DLP’s ego. Simply half of the UWP should have gone to the Cocktail gathering and half to the sporting event and just explained to the people at the sporting event the reasons why only half of their team is present. Something like we receive late invitations and we decided to be the mature ones and attend; but we also decided not to disappoint you all so we split the team in half…hope you all understand).

Trust me the readership is nothing to write home about. As a result, they put out these propaganda, so that the media, whether, it be DNO, or Q(% will pick it up thereby extending the audience they do not have.
Most readers, or persons who bother to take some time to take in information via one form or the other, is fed up of the blatant lies and misinformation been disseminated by this piece of …….., and its sister organizations. It showa a continuing disrespect for, and an insult to the intelligence of those of us who seek to get information, upon which one can make informed decisions, or objective analysis of issues that confront us daily.
It is indeed sad, that in 2014, some people are still living in the WWll days, by spewing the sort of propaganda that Hitler and his propaganda machine could have been proud of.

So, “The others received theirs on the day before the event.” However, “members were committed to a “heavily advertised” national sporting engagement in Trafalgar on March 22, the very evening of the reception”.

The UWPwee’s press conference has therefroe confirmed what the DLP claimed; that the UWPwee was too busy to care to attend an event of such significance to our development.

Lol! These guys are really classic. You would think that they would be publicly trying to exonerate themselves with a plausible explanation. Instead, they are in public telling the world that although they had enough time (a whole day) to bathe, get dressed, and make an appearance at the event as the representatives of the “people of Dominica”, they were too busy going to play .

Not too long ago, Spaggs told us that he had received an invitation “too late” (one day before) to allow him time to bathe, dress, and make a relevant speech at an important ground-breaking event for his constituents. All the guy ahd to do was show up and say something appropriate but he had no time for that. And now, this!! Am i the only one seeing something very wrong here?
