UWP defends position to boycott Parliament

UWP President, Edison James

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The main Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) Tuesday defended its decision to boycott the first sitting of Parliament since the December 18 general election, insisting that persons in the three constituencies it won would not be neglected.

UWP president Edison James told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that while the duly elected members will not “give legitimacy” to what it deems an “illegitimate parliament”, his party’s work would continue in several key constituencies.

James was among the three successful UWP candidates, but both the party leader, Ron Green and the deputy leader, Claudius Sanford, were among the causalities of the 18-3 rout by the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP).

In protest of what it called fraudulent election practices, the UWP announced it would not send its three elected members to the House and demanded fresh general elections within 18 months.

“We will be representing our constituencies and we will be doing the work that as constituency members we have to do. I might add that when you look at the practicality of it, Parliament meets at least three maybe four times a year for three to four days. The real work in representing your constituency is done outside of Parliament and we intend to do that,” James said.

He said all three parliamentarians had held extensive consultations with their constituents and were confident they had their blessing to snub the Parliament when it convenes for the first time since the December polls.

“Those very people have endorsed the decision that we have taken in conjunction with the party not to go to Parliament. I think the people you will hear suggesting that what we are doing is wrong are the people who didn’t vote for us,” James said.

“We have had public meetings, one-on-one meetings and I can tell you there is no one who I am aware has voted for me who did not endorse the decision,” he added.

James contends that the absence of an opposition in the Dominica parliament should not seriously affect the functioning of the legislative chamber, claiming that there had been a bias against opposition legislators over the past five years.

“We have been in the parliament for the last several years which has been essentially hijacked by the government and the speaker so that I do not know that our absence with three seats as opposed to 18 will have any significant impact,” he suggested,

The former prime minister also added his voice to condemnation of Prime Minister Skerrit’s decision to fill key civil service positions without the necessary consultation with the Opposition Leader.

“They will be in the Parliament talking to themselves. They have done everything that they could do outside of the law to have a one party state so they will enjoy themselves,” James said.

The UWP said it will participate in an alternative “People’s Parliament” being organised by the recently formed Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD) that is also scheduled for Thursday.

A MRD statement says the ‘People’s Parliament’ will serve as an alternative forum to ensure the survival of vibrant debate “during this period of political crisis”.

I voted for the UWP and i dont want them in parliment with those wolves in sheep clothing! We need not be clsoe to those type of people! Those who will do anything, legal or illegal to get what they want.

We are going to have our People parliament where people can speak freely without anyone shouting ‘sit down”.

Let the dogs bark at each other in the so-called house of parliment!

This Peoples Parliament will be a gathering of people discussing politics, with people voicing their opinions, ideas and hopefully creating policies. This is a good thing for Dominican politics. Dominica needs to find its own political style. Who knows this may be effective in forming a new opposition party. Both the United Kingdom and the United States of America have two chambers.

The U.WP, Freedom and the rest of the political opposition parties have no where else to go. Each party has tried by itself to be heard, but it looks like they must come together some how to achieve this. Again this is very good for Dominican politics, it is a good thing to have differences of opinion, but this new group must be effective in putting forward their ideas, forming policies and becoming valid, effective opposition. They must have intelligent people that are capable of winning an argument of ideas and facts. Not just in the rum shop, but in amongst sober people. These people will be needed to hold the government accountable in Parliament.

Misa, you are a babbling uwp.

I know the inside working of your party. Your uwp plan is to boycott the two parliament meeting and then attend the last meeting, create a fracas with the speaker of the house in order to get kicked out of parliament.

Then you will repeat this again.

Aren’t you guys tired of this nonsense?

Now Missa if you are so inclined not to be part of DA’s development, I challenge you and your party to vacate your seats and let’s call a by- election for the three seats.

These are good talking point you can bring to your MRD.

You like stereotyping, don’t you. Thats the easiest way for you, close people inside a box or rather fit a dummy into a can??? lol True Domini-can

I agree with you, I believe that by the sweat of a man’s brow he should eat bread. They cannot accept a salary as long as THEY ARE NOT Parliamentary Representatives. Going into a Parliament where a speaker shouts down at you does not make you a Parliamentary Representative. Looking and attending to the needs of your constituents, thats what makes you a Parl. Rep.

Now will you agree that the Ministers in Cabinet should be given a Terms of Reference and be paid a salary based on their qualifications and the work they produce. I also believe that they should be presenting quarterly reports. Lets have our money’s worth and take it to the NEXT LEVEL.

The Government have programmes lol. According to Skerrit: When, Where, What, How. Oh you mean the 20% decrease on PORT CHARGES, that one take allu labourites, allu do not like to read and inform yourselves, thats why Skerrit will always fool allu.

Or you mean the appointment of Civil Servants including the Nurses, an Administrative function under the Chief Personnel Officer, I guess only the ones in the dark who have little knowledge can be fooled, like the labourites who hate to read and gain knowledge.

In addition, we know where all the lazy people are we saw them at the red clinics, riding on the backs of hardworking (workers – 12,000+) Dominicans. We know where all the lazy people are when the Ministers cannot stay and do the work they are being paid to do, they always flying. But then again, they cannot do the work because they have little knowledge like their supporters and no qualifications.

Like those lazy labourite ..officers that driving labour vans all over the place and now prisoners escaping. Go and look allu will see lazy.

Dominica is democratic and everyone has a right to excercise their rights within the ambits of the law. The UWP is a party with those rights. Live with it.

Why should the anti-MRD people bother and stress themselves out over decision taken by opposition to boycott the house sittings.
They have lost their sheep so Just leave them alone and they will come home carrying thier tales behind them.

In the mean time the government is on target with the programs that it is pushing. If they suceed or fail then the people will speak five years later.

Give politics a rest because the campaign is over and the people have spoken. Most people writing on this forum are lazy. They have too much free time on their hands. They should get into something productive.

EXCUSES, EXCUSES – To hide from the truth.

Representing its own? Some people are trying to believe their own lies now. But then again, they are just practicing what they were taught by the labour party leaders.

    1. UWP dictators?? This is a laugh. Was it UWP who said Dominica is too free, Madam Speaker.

    2. Mr. James ruled for only the people who voted for him??? You cannot be or know anything about Dominica. Don’t you see the Secondary Schools in Grandbay and Castle Bruce? What about the Portsmouth Fisheries Complex which was secured under the UWP for a vote for Whaling, but guess what, who could not bring it into fruition until after 10 years oh, yes, the same Labour Government who you all said is working. Only now can it give Portsmouth who voted for them all the time what UWP gave it 10 years ago.

Like I said, its just about dishonesty. Thats the only tea labourites have drinking from their leaders and thats the only fruits labourites have to bear. DISHONESTY. Lead with it, Rule with it, Vote for it and Live it.

PS. Do not forget the roads either, especially the Warner road which is now fully utilised by everyone. Ask your PM where he passes to go to Melville Hall Airport every week like clockwork like he governing by remote control. I thought Rosie was travelling too much. But then again, English and Phyc Degree to do Finance work, the technical persons in the Ministry can take better care of that, I will just sign the papers.

    This is UWP problem.

Mr James, said “those who voted for me” are in agreement.

Mr James, you are there to represent your constituency that includes those who (DID NOT) vote for you.

If want I answer of why UWP won only 3 seats, there you have it.

UWP is all about Party and not Dominica or Dominicans as a whole

    That statement is a disgrace.

A GROUP OF SERIOUS HARD WORKING ABLE DOMINICANS BETTER START PUTING A PARTY TOGETHER SO THAT IF THE DLP FAILS IN THERE MANDATE AND THE PEOPLE DECIDE TO CHANG AS THE DID AGAINST UWP THEY WILL BE ABLE TO STAND AND REPRESENT THE PEOPLE. ANY WAY WE BELIVE THAT THE DLP WILL CONTINUE TO WORK IN THE INTREST OF DA SO WE HAVE NO FEAR.U SEE OUR REPS ARE NOT WILLING TO HOLD ON TO THE POST FOREVER AS THOSE OF THE UWP BUT ARE WILLING TO DO LIKE HONORABLE WALTERS WHO MADE IT KNOWN THAT HE WILL NOT CONTEST AGAIN SO SOME OTHER CAPABLE YOUNG PERSON CAN BE PREPARED AND TRAINED TO CONTINUE THE WORK

    February 2, 2010

I understand that the carnival committee decided to revamp the pappy show wedding this year IN A NEW WAY and as part of the innovation decided to contact Ron, Sam, Eddo and company (MRD) to organize a ‘PAPPYSHOW PARLIAMENT” to add some spice to the carnival.
NICE GOING..This one is sure to create some amusement and nuff laughter. Can’t wait to see the cast of characters (actors) on show at the Garraway on Thursday.
One thing, ..should also get them to parade on carnival thurday on the road so that the majority of us who missed the comedy show could have a good laugh.

Edison James quote: “We have had public meetings, one-on-one meetings and I can tell you there is no one who I am aware has voted for me who did not endorse the decision,” he added.

What a shame!!! Were the three elected persons on the opposition elected only to represent those who voted for them, or were they elected to represent the entire constituency?? Is that the democracy that Eddie and Ron wants Dominicans to believe in?

Well, we know who are the real dictators, but Dominicans did not give them the chance to dictate us. They tried it in 1995, but when we see the trend they were taking we kicked them out before the end of their term. Yes, after 4 1/2 years.

I feel secure under the effective leadership of Roosevelt Skerrit. That’s where the people mandate lies. Not in no Kangaroo People’s Parliament with sore losers.

UWP too late for the Party. Eddie, Ron and the other cronies must move on with their life. Time waits for no man. We are in 2010 and not in the 1960’s.

All those business men and church leaders who voted for them and now afraid and want eddo, Prevo and the Salisbury MP to go and battle for them to ensure balance in de country let them go to parliament. The only Pappy Show we have is the so-called legitimate Cabinet of 18 and its Parliament with the Speaker, I guess they will be talking to themselves lol.

Where you ever see a person goes for a job related to finance and has an english and phyc degree: check the Dominica Parliament

Where you ever see a nurse and a teacher are now the supervisors of the persons who were supervising them without no intellectual upgrade: check the Dominica Parliament

Where you ever see a child just leave State College and now elected: check the Dominica Parliament

Man was bathing dead, is now minister, you know where to check.

and I can go on and on, just check it out and you will laugh and see where the real laugh and mockery is.

You ever listen to them speak and their pronunciations, oh my God, is a sign we do not have ear ache, oh wait most of us just switch the channel or radio stations.

The government deligitimise itself when it COULD NOT WIN an election fairly whose actions were a disgrace and an insult to the people of Dominica. I mean, if you are going to win why cheat??? It will only make you look bad as in this case.

And majority, we all know where the majority of people were in the days of Noah beacuse they were dishonest, just like we are seeing of the laborite supporters today.

These surely cannot be the words of a former Prime Minister. “Those very people have endorsed the decision that we have taken in conjunction with the party not to go to Parliament. I think the people you will hear suggesting that what we are doing is wrong are the people who didn’t vote for us,” James said.
It should be obvious that you are sent to parliament to represent a constituency not just the people who voted for you. Oh but let me guess that is how you ruled as Prime Minister…only for those who voted for you. No wonder you are now left to sit on the sidelines trying to figure out what went wrong. Take a look in the mirror.

Long story short, Sam says basically, those who are against the (so-called)illegal shenanigans of the legitimate Parliament will be wholly involved and in favour of the proceedings of the Peoples Parliament. One question Sam Rafael ……has there ever, in the history of US Democracy, been a ‘Peoples Senate’ or A ‘Peoples House’?! By those who were not in favour of the running of the US Government?! Makak

Ask any dominican if they really care wether UWP is in or out of parliament, i think the answer was made very clear at the polls on december 18th. dominicans excercised their very democratic right and had it manifested that they had no real use for the failed opposition, A.K.A UWP. so go ahead and stay out, in any case it is where u truly belong.

and about the “mock parliament”, dominicans really wouldn´t mind another “pappy show” to humor ourselves with…………………..i’m laughing already.

Mr James and Ron and some other morons keep saying that the PM did not consult the Opposition leader in relation to the appointments of Commissioner and deputy commissioner but so far has failed to inform the nation who has been appointed Opposition Leader. Surely Ron Green is not the constitutionally appointed leader of the opposition since he lost his seat, so i suppose the so called ‘People’s Parliament’ as illegal and unconstitutional as it may be will do us all a favour and at least designate a leader from among the three elected individuals not belonging to the ruling party but i do hope that these jokers don’t receive a penny until they stop their foolishness and do the work which they were elected to do which include their attendance at Parliament.

Could you imagine this man was once a Prime Minister? Have you ever heard such nonesense?

The UWP has this inate belief that the only purpose to contest an election is to form the Government. They simply refuse to understand that being the Opposition is a legitimate part of the democratic machinery.

It is so puerile, so unprofessional to suggest that by abstaining from Parliament you are deligitimising the Government.

The legitimacy of the Government lies not in the action, or inaction of the Opposition but in the will of the Dominican People as stated in the December 18 general elections.

You are mistaken Sir. Your abstinence will make a difference to the Parliament, the level of debate will certainly be enhanced.

  42. Truth B Told
    February 2, 2010

So it’s not just Ron that’s …taking the political structure of our nation for joke, now Eddy joining in the pappy show too – no surprise there.

For the record, the real PEOPLE’S PARLIAMENT will be meeting in the House of Assembly as prescribed in our constitution, where the PEOPLE’S duly elected representatives will meet to conduct the PEOPLE’S business. If the losers do not choose to attend, that’s their choice.

One thing I do agree with the MP for Marigot on is that their absence will have little or no effect on the workings of the government. However, if you are elected to do a job and refuse to go to work then you are disrespecting your employers (in this case the people of your constituency). But I never believed the UWP had any respect for the people of Dominica in the first place.

Their actions are disgrace and an insult to the people of Dominica. But their “sore loser behaviour” speaks volumes as to their commitment, character and ability to lead. It is a shame they cannot behave in a civil manner, but I guess that’s their choice.

    February 2, 2010

Ebeh look it!! New Parliament in town. NEWS BULLETIN:

On Thursday February 4th Dominica’s latest political, theatrical group the MRD will be hosting its latest theatrical performance entitled: THE PEOPLES’ PARLIAMENT. This reporter understands that it is but the first of a series of comedy ‘pappy’ shows which the group will be undertaking, all of which will take place on the very day when the official sittings of the Dominican parliament will be taking place.
Among the cast of characters schedule to appear include … A number of other Ministers are expected to be sworn in by the new President of Dominica his excellency ..(who will be flown in from the diaspora just in time for the show). The Attorney General has not yet been named but we understand that there are a number of names floating around including a certain.. lawyer, who seems to be at the top of the list, although names such as the … lawyer, a lawyer who still hasn’t lost his British accent .., and a well known female lawyer .. has also surfaced. We have been reliably informed that no Leader of the Oppsition is expected to be sworn in, although rumors are circulating that a well known calypsonian/MC/Entertainer has indicated his interest in the job. IT IS EXPECTED TO BE A GRAND AFFAIR. COME ONE, COME ALL. DON’T MISS IT!!! DO PREPARE YOURSELF FOR QUITE AN ENTERTAINING EVENING FILLED WITH LAUGHTER AND AMUSEMENT. Entrance is FREE, however, Pappy will be collecting contributions at the gate for those who are not too amused and who would rather tune in to the pappy show again on Kairi FM as a form of political entertainment
