UWP not backing down amid bi-election threats

(L-R) UWP President Edison James, Elected member for the Salisbury constituency Hector John and Green at the 3rd People's Parliament

United Workers Party (UWP) Leader Ron Green has made it clear that his party’s elected members will continue to boycott the Parliament, despite threats of a bi-election by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

Green reiterated at the third session of the Peoples Parliament in Salisbury on Tuesday that the UWP is not satisfied with the general elections results and will continue to boycott the proceedings.

“We are saying that we must clean the electoral list and [ensure] that there are no dead people on the list, there are no repetition of names and that there is a clean list. We are saying that we must have free and fair access to the state-owned media, and there must be a formula derived so that the access can be brought about,” he said.

Green also called for adherence to the bribery laws that we have in Dominica.

When will u.w.p leaders and activists stop their propoganda circus in the media? Now, they are openly encouraging citizens ro break the law by blocking roads. Do these people really think that they have what it takes to lead Dominica in 2010 and beyond? Their decision not to go to the parliament has nothing to do with the reason that they have put forward. The real reason is that they do not have a leader among the three who won their seats who is able to take the party into the next general election.
Their laziness and inefficiency is a factor here. They want Ron Green to take up the burden and so they are using dirty gimmicks asusual to see if he can be back in an election race(in their dreams). Why was there no petition from the grandfond and wesley seats? These are seats one would expect them to attempt to take back. They are using other seats as decoys to try to impress on people that all over DOminica the election was fraudelent.
Dominicans were surprised when these desparades came up with this. They are now caught up in their mess. Their supporters did not tell them to stay away from parliament, but they claim that their supporters directed them to do so. Now with by-elections looming ahead sources say that they want to return to parliament but their supporters direct them not to go.
Good for them!!! Labour will not be a victim of any by-election. U.W.P must pay for their sins!!!
    ALLO FOR ROSEAU!!!!

The point is being missed. This forum is not just for hysterics. The fact is there is a voters list of 67,000 in a population of 69000. Since only 18year olds and upwards can vote, something is wrong. Also 37000 people voted in the last elections which means 30000 voters did not vote so something is wrong. If this continues by next elections there will be more voters than the population. The list cannot just be cleaned up, the list has to be completely redone with ID cards. If people in the diaspora want to register then they can as long as they do so within our laws. What is so difficult to understand about that? The laws pertaining to bribery in elections simply state that no one should give or promise a gift incentive whether in cash or kind to anyone to get his or her vote. A plane ticket to cross the border of one country to come across the border of another to vote for the donor of the ticket or the donor’s favourite candidate is classified as a gift incentive and bribery

Excuse my ignorance, but Is it possible for the UWP to gather teams from various constituencies, obtain copies of lists and begin the cleansing process themselves? The names of dead persons etc. can be made public and submitted to the electoral office….?

Is the voter’s list private or public? Wills are public documents, is an election list private?

Can they obtain copies of bribery laws both local and international and have them published on their website or on DNO ? At least some of the pertinent clauses?

This will have us much better informed, better able to make political decisions and will start the ball rolling for election reform. If after all this, nothing is achieved, I think they have a strong case with the people of Dca.

So why do these people just sit on their buttocks and just talk, complain, cause trouble and do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but parlay parlay parlay?

After all, this is not about party, this is about us Dominicans and regardless of which party we support, we all want fair and clean elections. So when will these people stop lashing their tongues against their teeth and just get to work?

Wouldn’t that be better in the public interest than the type of action undertaken right now?

No one had the services of the state-owned media Mr green so no one had any advantage there. I agree with one thing there though that the electoral list should be gone through to ensure that there isn’t any dead people on that list.. If we have money hell yea lets get voter ID cards with picture, address and voter registeration number on there so that will solve the problem of repetition of names or differentiate between people with same names.

Do you also want to do something about Dominicans living overseas coming back to vote Mr.Green? The are Dominicans, people who carry our passports, some of them love this country or have more love for this country than some of us living on the island it self. They are also the ones sending money and other items home for the relatives, so i think that one out of it. They have just as much right to vote in this country as anyone of us..

I am disappointed that you all will continue to boycott the Parliament Of The Commonwealth Of Dominica. That’s the place the opposition fight to make Dominica better.

Some time ago when Mr. green attempted to clean up the La Plaine elections list he only managed to remove the names of certain individuals who were alive and well walking the streets of La Plaine. Byhis own admission he said it was a typographical error. Mr. Green, with the help of your party machinery, can you show the names of the dead people who are on the list of five constituencies who “presented themselves” to vote and actually voted? Beyond mere speculation, show how the “thousands” who were brought here to vote actually voted. Mr. green can you tell the people of Dominica that your party – acting as a collective or through others acting indiviually on your party’s behalf, did not bring anybody to vote in the last general elections? Do you have the courage or decency to deny that?

Mr. Green what is your obsession with power? Did any of the dead people on the list come to vote? If they did it says that even the dead don'[t trust you. How sad. Put your thumb in your mouth cry baby, grow up, start being a man and not a child whose mother took something away from him that was harmful to him.

Represent us at parliament which is what we voted for you to do or I think you should bow out and allow the PM to call by-elections in all three constituencies and get it over with. You want there to be a one party state just say so. Stop dancing around the bush and cut what is in your way. I’m sick and tired of all of you politicians. Selfish!!!!!!!! All about Ron nothing to do with Dominica and it’s people.

The ballot spoke why can’t we just accept that we lost and move on. Five years we try again.

Mr Green could produce a list of dead people that are on the voters lists.

    • shame
      April 23, 2010

well if he can then produce that list and then with that list show us how these dead people voted in the last elections, fools wow this is so crazy.

    • P!!!!
      April 23, 2010

He must take the names to the electoral office with evidence that the persons are really dead, a death certificate is appropriate in that case.

But no he won’t do that because it is in his interest for obvious voting reasons….lol …… Skerrit ketch him!!!!! LMAO lol lol lol .

  20. April 23, 2010

    Whateverrrr!

    • In the event that there were suspicions of ” dead people ” on the registration list, it was the responsibility of the opposition to ensure that these names were removed prior to election day.

To cry foul at this point and time is just a waste of time, and to suggest the list must be cleaned up now is sort of suspicious.

My suspicions lead me to believe, that if Ron Green, Edison James, and et, al., knew that the list was riddled with the names of dead people, and did nothing to remove the names from the list, one may assume that they hope to benefit from the contaminated list also.

In my opinion, the opposition is disgruntled at the moment, nonetheless, they should blame Ron Green for their defeat. The man had absolutely no programme; a party cannot win an election by simply suggesting that the party in power is a corrupted party, or government.

People heard that before, that’s the slogan which took the UWP down more than ten years ago, and they try to reversethe corruption theory on the Labor Party without success.

If they are hoping that the election will be overturned, I don’t think that there is a probability that will happen, and even if two or three seats won by the Labor Party were to be declared in the UWP favor, they still will remain on the outside looking in.

In any event they will not form the Government.

They said they are not worried about an Bi-election; but, I think they should be, assuming that people have to return to the poles, chances are they may loose the two seats they retained.

Now I know that it would be difficult for an outsider, or even an native of Marigot, coming close to defeating Edison James, however, it is likely that Norris Prevost could well loose his seat.

In any event, that would make matters worst!

As for Ron Green, I think his days for winning an election in Dominica, is all over, his chances of sitting in the nations parliament in the twenty-first century, will only happen if he is brought in the way in which Skerrit involved Timothy in his government about five years ago.

People need to know when to cool it; the results in numbers are just too vast to argue.

They lost period: and they should accept that fact.

First they claimed that bribery, and the flying in of expatiates from North America, and Europe, caused them to loose, now they are blaming dead people on the list, nonetheless, it appears they are ignoring the result in the number of votes cast, and in who’s favor the votes were cast.

Ron Green, is blaming everything, and everyone else, except himself!

Man, your incompetence cost your party the election.

      Face that fact!

        April 24, 2010

bravo, bravo, bravo,Francisco, the UWP incompetence and the lack to provide knowlege to the people is what cost them the elections, you guys had nothing to fill the voters with, people are tired of mapee politics, people wanted to hear what you could do and is going to do for their children and future, but you guys were busy blaming every one while the winning party were busy showing the voters what they were going to do for dominican, if you guys had stop and think a bit and stop blaming every one for your own mistakes, maybe then, just maybe you would have gotten a few more sits.

Ron wake up Dominicans dont need a spoiled man as a leader they need a strong man.
