DNO POLL RESULT: Readers choose Callaloo

The results of the poll
The results of the poll

Readers of Dominica News Online who participated in an online poll, have largely chosen callaloo as the next choice for Dominica’s national dish.

3,106 readers participated in the poll which presented five choices: callaloo, sancoche, broth, fig and saltfish and titiwi.

The results are as follows:

-Callaloo – 1,106 votes (36 percent)
-Sancoche – 684 votes (22 percent)
-Broth – 486 votes (16 percent)
-Fig and Saltfish – 429 votes (14 percent)
-Titiwee – 401 votes (12 percent)

The result of DNO’s poll is only a small part of the overall process of determining what the national dish is going to be.

The result of the poll will be sent to the National Emblems Committee which has been working in collaboration with the Independence Committee and the Statistical Division to come up with the dish.

Then there will be simulcasts on all the radio stations in Dominica where listeners will call in to also cast their votes. The date of the simulcast is yet to be determined.

There will be a texting feature sponsored by LIME where Dominicans will be able to text in their favourite choice for the national dish.

Hotels and restaurants around the island will also form part of the voting process.

Then all the data will combined and the dish with the highest number of votes from all the different sources will be the winner.

Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence said the national dish will be announced by late June to early July.

it can be done. as long as you add coconut milk. this is what makes it unique

Yes other meat as beef and chicken could be substituted, whatever the preference. Not everyone eats pork. I previously commented on that.
I do not think this poll is final. Who knows? Someone may come up with another type of dish.

I am beginning to wonder how many of our hotels and restaurants would offer callaloo as a dish to its customers? That sounds more like a side dish to me just as some restaurants offer a little soup before or with the main meal.

I love callaloo. My mother made delicious callaloo on Saturdays with (also) crab meat when it was in season. When I visited a friend, callaloo was especially cooked for me. The meat used was smoked turkey. What a treat! It was delicious!
I spoke to a friend over the weekend who told me his wife cooked a delicious callaloo which he enjoyed. I asked him what meat was used. He replied, “chicken”.
For color, some red, yellow and orange sweet peppers could also be cooked with the callaloo.
These peppers require very little cooking. They could be added when the callaloo is almost cooked. The peppers could be slightly roasted prior to placing them in the callaloo. A variety of meat could be used.
Smoked pork could be used which will make this dish tasty.
If callaloo is chosen as the national dish, I cannot wait to hear as well as taste in when I visit Dominica. Looking forward to this. :)

i personally think that this is a big mistake… we’re turning our backs on the Crapaud during its difficult times as an endangered species… what message are we sending as a society… that we abandon those in need? what are the authorities really thinking… if the crapaud is removed as the national dish, what next? we will remove it as a national symbol? i hate this about my country… we never support those in difficulty

Are you suggesting we eat the crapaud into extinction?

A national dish is something that has be eaten and consumed and not be in name only. With the crapaud near extinction we cannot afford to lose one for consuming.

I think the crapaud is already a national treasure and should be protected as such…the authorities should name it as something else, not as the national dish.

        June 18, 2013

As it was previously stated on DNO’s article, the crapaud is diseased. Furthermore, it is seasonal. The main ingredient for the national dish must be year-round.

I love pork. If they so wish that could be changed. They have the option to substitute beef and/or chicken, seasoned of course, whatever the preference. It is too bad the crapaud – mountain chicken is no longer edible due to disease. It could also have been used in the callaloo. You know, it would add to the variety of meats.

  17. I love sancoche
