President of Dominica, Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton stated that the Government of Dominica was able to put in place effective response strategies to mitigate against the adverse effects of global climate change.
She made the statement during a ceremony held this week when newly appointed Ambassador of the United States of America to Dominica, His Excellency Roger F. Nyhus presented his credentials to her.
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, however, it has been reported that since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels which include coal, oil, and gas that produce heat-trapping gases.
“Following the major natural disasters of Tropical Storm Erika in 2015 and Hurricane Maria in 2017, prior to the emergence of the Covid-19 Pandemic in early 2020, our government was able to put in place effective response strategies to mitigate against the adverse effects of global climate change and other disasters by adopting and embracing the build back better approach,” she said.
According to Mrs. Burton, integrated into this approach is the vision of a new dynamic Dominica.
“National resilience and focus on the many windows of opportunities to be derived from such transformative initiatives as the digital economy and green energy which is centered on our geothermal development program,” she stated.
Mrs. Burton continued, “We therefore welcome the development assistance being offered by the United States which will no doubt put Dominica in a better position to respond to the various challenges facing us as a small island state.”
This marks another chapter in the diplomatic relations between Dominica and the United States, which were formally established in 1978.

Climate change is a political issue same as the “pro-life” agenda in the US. The climate is indicative to the wind direction which is out of human control. The irony here is that, the simple things that are within our control we ignore. Things such as fixing or the reconstruction of the roads/streets of Roseau, building bridges so people and vehicles could travel safely during heavy rainfalls or hurricane; keeping our China hospital stocked with medical supplies; paying nurses, teachers, police officers etc a decent salary and helping our farmers by rebuilding their feeder roads and so on and so forth. Those are the things which are within our power to fix. But no! We are instead trying to tell the wind how strong to blow, and trying to tell the sea how high should her tides rise. I mean, this is completely a waste of time and the lack of innovation to create the things necessary for human basic needs and happiness. We are left with no choice but to accept begging from all and sundry and turn back on our words. We can see that we are not able to initiate any conversation from these people.
