President of Dominica His Excellency Charles Savarin has condemned recent acts of violence on the island. He was addressing the nation on Tuesday evening.
“I have seen videos of disruptive behaviour in Marigot,” he said. “I have also seen videos of the Bishop of Roseau being harassed and verbally abused in the most shameful manner by the protesters in Marigot.”
He continued, “The is reprehensible behaviour which I condemn without reservation.”
The President is calling on all church leaders to condemn this lawless behaviour and in particular, to condemn the verbal assault on the Bishop of Roseau.
He further called on the professionals and community-based organizations to similarly add their voices of condemnation and to call for peace and respect for the rights of all to go about their legitimate business.
“In this regard, I command the police high commend and rank and file for their restraint,” Savarin stated.
Meantime, Savarin said all systems are in place for the General Election carded for Friday 6th, December 2019.
He also mentioned that he met with a number of community-based organizations, the church and political parties over the past two weeks to discuss developments ahead of Friday’s poll.
“At these fora the representatives of the various institutions were given the opportunity to express their concerns regarding electoral reform, the current heightened temperature in the period leading up to the general elections and the provision of subsection 19(1)(D) of the House of Assembly Election Act regarding the power assigned to the President to adjourn the holding of the poll to a later date,” he indicated.
He went on to say that that subsection, however, requires the President to be satisfied that the electoral list for all constituencies or for any particular constituency will not be printed before the day appointed under Section 12.
Savarin was referring to the law which clearly indicates the range of dates for when the General Election shall be held. In section 12, it states that the poll shall not be taken less than 15 days or more than 21 days after the day appointed for nomination of candidates.
He went on to urge all Dominicans to conduct themselves in a responsible and respectful manner.
“We all have a responsibility to abide by the provisions of the law and to promote the upkeep of law and order throughout this land that God has blessed us with,” Savarin noted.
Mr. President, a note of caution to you. If the current regime returns to power, you should expect to be “sick” 2 and a 1/2 years into the their next cycle. Obviously, once you are found to be sick by the good dr. dr., you will be escorted out of your grand palace and sent into a rest home somewhere to make room for the good dr.dr. You may think you are important, but they will show you that you are just chaff in the wind.
I hope the acts of violence you are condemning are not the legal protest actions taking place now. Because the things that are taking place is much more calm that the one you participated in. These are just calm protests where roads have been blocked and no one has been injured.
What you should be condemning is the fact that labour supporters have been stating that they are waiting for the go ahead to start killing people, Kenny G threatening to kill people and Jaisiah Benoit and crew attacking Joshua Francis with a gingerwine bottle in Kingshill.
It is within the people democratic right to protest and to stand up and fight for their right. You mr charles angelo savarin and roosevelt skerrit are blatantly and directly responsible for agitating the public to this extent. The dominican people want to be responsible for whatever happens in the next 5 years. give the people free and fair elections. GIVE ELECTORAL REFORM AND LET THE PEOPLE CHOOSE THEIR PRIME MINISTER.

Your Excellency Sir, who are the professionals that you speak about? did you not read from one of the top “psychiatrists” condoning that “despicable” behavior of the people of Marigot? He said that their conduct was not “violence” but “resistance”. For him, the Law of the Nation mattered not.
And yet, according to his profession, should be one looking into the protesters’ mentality, to send them a message of soundness, but he hates the Prime Minister of the Nation; so he is taking their side and exalting them.

Mr. Savarin, did you equally condemn the acts of criminality and lawlessness perpetrated by the Prime Minister recently exposed bt Al Jazeera?

There are two other reasons the president would be required to adjourn the election according to section 19 (a) in the case of war… and (b) in the case of a state of emergency. The latter is what it appears the opposition leadership and supporters have been trying to accomplish. Since no state of emergency has been declared the president cannot grant the request/demands of the opposition leader and other persons in this regard. People please read the Act and leave the president alone!!!!

As a result of the violence, strike and demonstrations you instigated, the Patrick John administration was dismissed. In light of what you did in 1979, if you need to make a statement, you should advise the entire skerrit government to resign. If there’s any honor or dignity left in your word.
