[Press Release] Contending for Dominica on nomination of Sylvanie Burton for office of President

Sylvanie Burton

The nomination by the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica of Mrs. [Sylvanie] Burton to serve as President of the Commonwealth of Dominica is a significant one, and one which I support. I send my warmest congratulations to Mrs. Burton, the first female and first Kalinago person who will serve as President of this nation.

I join thousands of Dominicans who celebrate the advancement of the status of women and girls, and who rejoice in the accomplishment of yet another female leader. Mrs. Burton’s nomination to be President is a testament to the fact that barriers are being broken, hence paving the way for our women and girls to ascend to any office.

As a Kalinago woman in public service, her nomination is a historic choice for the highest office of the land. Her rise to the presidency will be the culmination of historic efforts by women, while representing the striking progress of the Kalinago people.

It is my sincere hope that Mrs. Burton will epitomize the ability of women, particularly Indigenous women, to determine and prioritize matters of national interest, such as in the areas of health, education, climate change, gender equality to name a few. I hope that she will serve to create positive and sustainable change tailored to our distinct needs.
Contending for Dominica is a platform for bringing to the fore matters pertaining to the advancement of the Commonwealth of Dominica. For further information on Contending for Dominica, please contact Attorney-at-Law Joshua Francis at (767) 245-0704.

That is the foolishness with UWP supporters they do not read. All they do is listen to roro, gossip, fake news and lies on Q95.The constitution spells out the functions of the President.Skerrit cannot tell the President what to do and not do.Any bill that is debated in Parliament and passed by the majority,MUST be signed into law by the President. That is his/her duty.If he/she refused to sign he/she will be fired by the same parliament.Go read all you damn constitution.Jacka.

Congratulations on your nomination Mrs. Burton! A note worthy noting. Dominica never has barriers when coming to women. We had the first woman prime minister in the region and second to the UK. It has never been a real barrier for women to pursue leadership roles.

It is the constitution that makes a President.Skerrit can nominate,he cannot make.If the leader of the opposition does not agree with his nomination, that is where parliament comes in.Skerrit is RIGHT,no law,no constitution can prevent him from being. NONINATED to contest any election as a candidate in Dominica.Parrots can repeat their lies over and over again. The constitution makes it clear.UWP went to court, the constitution makes provision for dual citizens. When they realize they were aholes, they said he had aquired a french passport after that age of 17.Those aholes want the court to tell Skerrit to go get a french passport he say he does not have. For UWP the burden of proof is on the defendant.

Charlo has already brought the presidency to disrepute and made it a worthless office. Sadly, the OLD SPEAKER’ ghost will hunt that place for eternity since she died believing that the job belonged to her. I personally see no use for the presidency in today’s world.

anyone skerrit appoints for president in Dominica is going to take orders from skerrit. skerrit is the head of Dominica. I am okay with giving kalinago a chance in Dominica history but skerrit is in control in this matter.

I welcome and endorse the nomination of Sylvanie Burton for election in order to hold the Office of President of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Sylvanie is a well qualified and experienced professional lady who has served well in the Public Service of the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica. She is also an active community oriented person in Kalinago Territory and a member of Dominica’s indigenous people, the Kalinagos.

…and she is also a Skerrit worshipper and supporter. That’s the reason she is not suitable for this office. Remember the President should be political impartial!!! SHE ISN’T! Hence ineligible!

Realistically speaking what do we gain from having a “female indigenous president” over anybody else? Her gender and race doesn’t say anything about her ability and it’s only people obsessed with that kind of thing who rejoice over what is basically a meaningless “achievement”.

That aside what will she really be able to accomplish? The office of president is practically useless when it comes to executing anything in public other than signing off on bills and bestowing honors and other (IMO) useless activities that are just vestieges of old colonial rule. When was the last time you heard of anything that the president actually did themselves other than just being a public figure?

The seat is practically redundant at this point anyway because the last one just did the bidding of the prime minister considering that before president he was a member of his party. And by the looks of it this one won’t be any different

So whom do you really want to hold that office of the President of Dominica? Is it because it is not a candidate who supports the useless UWP party why you are disappointed? When will your playing politics come to an end? Just When, according to Shortshirt? I am sick of you UWP bums. Nothing pleases bums from what I can see and tell.

Mr. Francis, a practicing attorney at law, is sending affable comments on a process that appears to contravene the law as written in the constitution. As an officer of the court, shouldn’t our learned advocate be pursuing truth and fair implementation of constitutional law? The constitution of our great country applies to everyone, including those that believe “no law or constitution” can direct their actions. For once my people, Stand up for yourselves and your children.

Do women really want gender equality? Or just the benefits of assuming they are equal to men? Because really women and men are not the same. We are not equal. Why are continuing to act like women are oppressed and not allowed to do anything. These days is women that have all the jobs. Women that heading the remaining financial institutions. the FS in the min of Finance is a woman. Is a woman that calling the shots in the PM office. Tired of this attitude that women are destitute for recognition and respect. When in fact it is young boys and young men that are disenfranchised.

Jody hope you are not a woman. Women are always the one who cries down a sister. Here you ” Dominica is the state of women already, orchestrated by a horny wannabe king who has the pick of the crop.” You sound like those who cry down the sisters and you agree that all women should be house wives /bearing children only. Women are well educated and more focused so get up and educate yourself. You sound jealous too. You alone can do what no one can do for you. No matter what was said to you.

Who is disenfranchising young boys and men but themselves? Today male professions are dominated by women because these boys chose the roadside. Is this anybody’s fault? Leadership roles, free training and other options are offered to young people but the boys stay behind by choice. Stop talking rubbish stupes.
