[Press Release] Somerset launches 60th anniversary celebrations in grand style

Dominica’s longest surviving sports Club, Sagicor General Somerset of St. Joseph, launched its 60th-anniversary celebrations on Sunday, June 11, 2023, under the theme “Somerset, 60 not out”. The club organised a dominorama on that date for teams in the Parish and the event was held at the Somerset Club House. Four teams were slated to attend, including, St. Joseph, Layou, Somerset, and Tarreau, and although the St. Joseph team failed to show up, the event was hailed a resounding success to the extent that a number of participants as well as onlookers feel that the club should make this an annual feature.

The competition was won by the Somerset Sports Club, and it was felt that this was a positive way to start the anniversary by demonstrating the club’s competitive spirit. Somerset defeated Layou in the preliminary round, and beat Tarreau in the finals, to walk away with a trophy and two cartons of drinks, including beers, shandy, and malt. Prizes were also donated to the losing finalist Tarreau, and third Place Layou.

Although the actual anniversary date is in August, a number of activities will form part of the celebrations but these will unfold over the period and climax in August. The domino competition will be followed by a Father’s Day cricket match on Sunday 18, where fathers in general and the community at large will be entertained with some exciting cricket. Important to note that the above activities have both been endorsed and supported by the Parliamentary Representative Hon. Darron Lloyd, to whom we express our profound appreciation.

In keeping with Somerset’s motto, “Youth Development and Sports”, the 60 anniversary will focus heavily on the youth, not merely in terms of cricket development but more specifically in a holistic type of development program. At the same time, the club is also on a mobilisation drive to recruit young players.

60 years is quite an accomplishment.Well done guys. CONGRATS TO ALL who kept the club together through thick and thin!!!.
As a young boy i can remember St Joe used to be a powerhouse in cricket. Can’t remember all the names, but during the Ron Cuffy, Lloyd Brade time, i think St Joe was no “walk over” team. Later on i remember Roy Marshall, Cletus Scotland.
Can someone give me few other names of those who played with
    Ron Cuffy and
Lloyd Brade? Think Ron Cuffy was also nicknamed “Shotgun”?
I am not from St Joseph, but i am still interested!
