Prime Minister Skerrit Welcomes New British High Commissioner

British_High_Commissioner_1Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, has welcomed H.E. Victoria Glynis Dean new British High Commissioner to Dominica. Prime Minister Skerrit welcomed High Commissioner Dean to Dominica, highlighting the cordial relations between Dominica and Britain.

“The United Kingdom has been a steadfast partner in many areas of our development. We have several of our families, relatives resident in the United Kingdom all of whom are making a positive contribution to the economic and social development of the United Kingdom. Notwithstanding the fact that we have relations with the EU the bilateral relations between the UK and Dominica has remained very active. We have cooperation in a number of areas but more particularly in the area of security. I have had the occasion to write to your Prime Minister thanking the Government of the UK for the assistance on the security front. Records will show that we have excellent cooperation in that area and also we have been able to do quite a bit in curbing the prevalence and presence of the trafficking of drugs throughout the Caribbean waters.”

The new British High Commissioner expressed her delight in being accredited to Dominica. She pledged her country’s continued support to strengthening “important bilateral cooperation”.

“As you say alongside and in partnership with the European Union as well and again to hear you … the security sectors as well, a real important area for work. I am delighted that we have been able to offer assistance. I hope that that has been of the really kind of pragmatic hands-on capacity building operational type. I think that is where we have some expertise and where perhaps it would be most useful. I think there is more to do so I suspect we will have to talk about this area of work over my
four years here. I know that we all want to continue that support but, again, really making sure that it is targeted to your needs.”

H.E. Victoria Glynis Dean presented her credential to H.E. Charles A Savarin, President of Dominica on
Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at a short ceremony at the President’s Office.

Those who want to return to being a colony are just demonstrating their ignorance of the state of things under Britain, we were not better off. Harriet Tubman said it, she could have freed thousands more, if they realized they were slaves, sadly I realized that there are still the worst type of slaves in Dominica the mental slaves, the blacks who are crabs in a box. those who would sell their mothers into slavery once again for the white man trinkets. Bermuda nd Bahamas remain racist towards the black African negroid person to this day. England did not want Dominica she wanted and offered the independence. Dominica was too expensive and difficult to develope, white could not live and prosper on Dominica as they needed slaves labour, and the mountains allowed the slaves to run away. Sadly Dominicans are so brain-washed, they will never achieve full independence, as they do not know what that is, the ability to run your own ship, make your own mistakes, and correct that. Skerrit wasted a opportunity.Maybe the workers will do better, time will tell. The British High Commissioner is here to see what is going on. So many rumours and counter rumours.

Dominica is no worst off than it was when the British were here, oh please! We were far better off, we had agriculture, how many Dominicans went to England bettered themselves and their families, and you want to say we weren’t better off. Agriculture is dead now, young people cannot get jobs unless you know somebody in government, crime is on the rise, drugs, etc. My friends many of us dont want to hear the truth, but as they say the truth always hurts we were better off under them.

Castle Comfort and others should be aware that the British High Commissioner called officially on the President to present her Credentials and on the Acting Prime Minister, as the PM was out of state at the time. That is the proper protocol. In receiving the High Commissioner the PM was extending a courtesy which he was not required to. The informality of that meeting is entirely appropriate.

Dominicans and Skerritt don’t be fooled , The whole world knows about DLP criminal enterprise and as such is coming closer to them to make sure that an international eye is kept closer on them.
Elections are close and I they will be in land to expose Skerritt for who he is.
There are many ways to skin a cat and I know that this administration in under scrutiny by many people.

You lack intelligence. Are you not aware that the world has, to a certain extent integrated? All democratic countries cooperate in many respects, in trading, in the fight against terrorism and drug-trafficking to mention a few. Those countries are not as distant as they appeared to be in former years.

I totally agree it was a big mistake to go independent we were better off under the British and that is a fact. Look at the island like Bermuda and the BVI who remained with Britain they are much better off than all those that went independent.

You appear to have forgotten the Americans. Others as the British, Spanish and French wanted a piece of the pie, to own slaves and be slave masters. Do not forget them.
Some of us our fore-great grands and uncles were slave masters. We are products of both nationalities and heritage. There is nothing we can do about it. It is now all history. May this part of it not repeat itself.

      January 28, 2014

How can people like Concerned raise questions about independence at this time and even seek to make comparisons with Bermuda and BVI? If one wants to make a comparison between Dominica on the one hand and Bermuda and the BVI on the other, the appropriate point of comparison is 1978 when all 3 were British possessions. In 1978, the ports, airports, secondary schools, hospitals, roads, housing, tourism and service industries, jobs and standards of living in BVI and Bermuda were all at a higher standard than was the case in Dominica. We may not have caught up with Bermuda and the BVI, but we have made significant strides and are much better off than we would have been had we remained as a colony of Britain based on the neglect which we experienced in the 200 years of British colonial rule prior to Independence.

Diplomacy at its best! In diplomatic term the British High Commissioner (BHC) wasted no time to let Mr. Skerrit know that they are concerned about our security, and they England, want to talk more about that with Skerro. Interestingly, one would realize that all Skerro wanted to talk about with her is how Dominican citizens are contributing to the British economy but the BHC was quick to shift it from what Skerrit wanted to talk about to the real concerns of Britain, which is security.

That’s not true. You are being very selective and choose to only highlight the first part of that paragraph.

What you have quoted is her response to the comments the PM made.
And I quote,” The United Kingdom has been a steadfast partner in many areas of our development. Records will show that we have excellent cooperation in that area and also we have been able to do quite a bit in curbing the prevalence and presence of the trafficking of drugs throughout the Caribbean waters.”

You see, it is true Dominicans have cooperated with the EU, specifically our Historic connection with the British. I welcome that the PM made that connection.
He continues by highlighting the security cooperation between the EU and Dominica by saying, “We have cooperation in a number of areas but more particularly in the area of security”.

So it’s not today we have had great cooperation in security and it has nothing to do with corruption. We complained that he has cooperation with China, Venezuela, Cuba, Morrocco, etc; but we always had cooperation with the US and EU also.

Today he is re visiting areas to strengthen cooperation and calling for aid in the improvement of security, we try all types of absurd allegations to bring the work of the PM down.

The PM is humbled and shows gratitude to his female counterpart, so the meek and mild demeanor is natural to any gentleman. Look at the first picture for another minute. The PM is welcoming but the character of the handshake shows authority. Body language tells a Thousand stories.

Dominica is an independent sovereign country and has the legal and moral authority to make friends with Communist and Imperisalist nations in the best interest of Dominica and the Dominican people. We not switching from one to the other but have been in Diplomatic cooperation with all for many years now.

The PM heart is with Dominicans but he is human and makes errors too. There will always be more room for improvement but there is so much that needs to be done immediately.

Jobs, jobs, jobs in every sector is what we need. All loans we take, we must have Dominicans working to pay them back. Unemployment is way too high and solving this should be the main focus now. Agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, construction, Financal and Health should be used to grow the economy. This can cut unemployment in half in the next 5 years and It would stimulate the economy to the next level.

PM, honestly, if you win and don’t change your direction and focus to the needs of the country, this will definitely be your last term. Many laborrites would NOT support UWP nor Lennox but we too are concerned with many things ( especially secrete deals).
Shuffle and fire half of your team and get new blood. Start new but more powerful. Let this be your legacy and make this election and the next five years for the people and get them employed. Many Dominicans are ready to come back to work. We all need to work together to build Dominica.

body language tells you what you want to think! the man is twice her size physically (height and weight) and a prime minister in the country she is visiting, Dominica is independent of Britain their presence and contribution is merely a traditional role, they have as much importance in DA as France does. He is expressing such posture so as not to seem overbearing and arrogant. Allu spinners will always look for the negative… its where you live in your head! UDOHREADYET

Maybe making Dominica a British Colony again is in the works, that would be a good thing. Dominica was much better off as a British colony. The Dominica politicians at the time of seeking independence made a huge mistake.

    • Fouchette
      January 27, 2014

Dominica is no worse off now than it was under Britain. The islands that were colonized by the British all seem to have done worsen than those of the French, USA, Dutch etc. Britain’s intention here was never to give, it was always to take.

      You talking fouchette!!!!

    • Simply the Truth
      January 29, 2014

They made a grave mistake and a big mess of it. Note today where Dominica and the other islands get help from and may be forever indebted to the point, be it 50 or a hundred or more years from now, Dominica may no longer be Dominica and called Dominica. The British are not blind to this, the possibility.
So we put two and two together. It may be the reason why the British High Commissioner is now in the region. They are keeping ties with the islands as Dominica.
You want to bet that this may be a source of discussion among British politicians as also the British PM?
Little do we know, they have their eyes open, so to speak. They are sending a message that they have not given up Dominica, be it in terms of security. It could be a protection for Dominica in the future.
Dominicans will do well to give this a thought and to welcome the British High Commissioner who represents the British PM and the Queen of England. I see nothing wrong with that.
