PSS holds Math Fun Day

PSS band

The student body of the Portsmouth Secondary School got an opportunity to experience a more fun side of Math on Friday when the school held its second Math Fun Day.

According to the Head of the Mathematics  Department, one of the objectives of the day was to foster more interest in the subject especially in light of the declining performance of Mathematics at CXC both regionally and locally. She added that the day was meant to accomplish that by linking maths to fun.

The variety of games offered allowed students to explore simple concepts from counting and estimations to more difficult concepts such as Linear Equations. These games included bingo, card games, dominoes, ball games, quizzes and Math Jeopardy.

The activities catered to all levels and abilities of students. According to reports from the school, some students said they that really enjoyed the day and saw it as  activity that positively affects the entire school.

The school also used the day to raise much needed funds for the Math department which will be used to purchase materials and resources.

Here are some highlights of the day in photos.

As I see the photos I remember the good old days at PSS. The tennis board- there were several tennis locations in those days. There was a room set up for tennis adjacent to the physics lab but then we would have our makeshift set up in auditorium after school hours when the dedicated location was occupied by the advance players – Alcid guys, Pee Pee, Anthony Joseph and other. Remember getting sheets of plywood just to play.
Then I see the band – back in day we had our own band backing up PSS calypsonians like Rhumba, Derrick, mighty young, Sonia. The band mediators came from PSS.
The concept of Math day reminds me of Events like French day , Spanish day. Those were big events organized by Juliana Magloire. The events were so successful that we started sharing the events with the secondary schools. So one year French day would be done at convent , the next year Wesley High. The same with Spanish – the event was always supported by the Venezuelans through the peace corp volunteers – Miss Diaz I remember. There was hiking clubs, geography society and debating club. The end of term parties were always great- there was no violence, drugs , light rum punch ( no strong alchol) and some good old zouke and soukous music.

The PSS band is mainly made up of Penville students. To contact them you would have to come to the school and ask for the head of the music department or for the students within the Bible club whom play. Keep it up boys!!!! :) :) :)

By the way majority of games used on those two days are related to probability.

    Way to go!
I live in the U.S. and my daughter’s 5th grade class has what they call ‘fun friday’ which is held on the first friday of every month and it has to do with reading where the kids have to write a summary on a book that they’ve read that previous month. On that 1st friday they get to read their summary to the class. They have snacks to make it even more of a fun event. I think any teacher or school that takes such initiative to make learning fun like what PSS is doing needs to be commended and other schools can take example.
The future of our youth is bright if we invest in them. Keep it up PSS!

Great idea. We need make math problems more applicable I.e. Relate the math concepts to everyday life. Not teach math in isolation but show students the link between math and the other sciences.
