Public urged to participate in ‘one million tree campaign’

Minister for Environment, Rural Modernization and Kalinago Upliftment, Cozier Frederick, has appealed to the general public to join the “one million tree campaign”.

At the official reopening of Peebles Park in Roseau last week, Fredrick said it is expected that by 2020, a number of trees will be planted across the island.

He said the government has already received support from the United Nations Environment Program for this campaign.

“We are encouraging every Dominican to join in the movement to plant trees at your homes, at your schools, close to your places of worship, your workplace and within your communities.”

He said various agencies and communities across the island are also part of this initiative.

Frederick said that in addition to the tree-planting work undertaken at Peebles Park, the Ministry of the Environment has installed over sixty planters in the Roseau/Portsmouth area as part of the national reforestation project and a beautification campaign.

The newly reopened Peebles Park

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Karen Prevost, has said the reopening of Peebles Park will enhance the city of Roseau and hopes that more of these “green spaces” will open throughout the city.

The park was severely damaged after Hurricane Maria in 2017 and since then, renovations to the site has been undertaken by the government of Dominica at a cost of over $EC500,000.

“We are very happy for the patience of the public while the park was closed. There are still some things that are ongoing such as the construction of the lovely park benches but we are just very happy, the Ministry of Environment, to have the general public back in the Peebles Park,” Prevost said.

Prevost added that the park is a historical site and an area of significance and said more work will be done to the site in due time.

Meantime Frederick, a first-time minister in the nearly twenty-year-old DLP administration, said his ministry is also on a campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags in 2020 and has partnered with major supermarkets in Roseau to distribute free reusable bags to customers.

“Over the next few weeks, the ministry will continue to distribute over forty thousand of these reusable bags within the communities around the island. “

He said it is also the government’s intention to ensure that every Dominican owns a reusable bag to reduce the impact of plastics on the environment.

Planting trees en. There is a major problem brewing in Dominica and you guys worrying about planting trees?

Is there any Chinese community in the world in which you do not find the triads?

    Google triads.

Whether you like it or not, they are already in Dominica, and it is there to stay. A Christian country en? A praying country en? Innocent did not travel fools! All hell will breakout when these triads begin to show their true colors.

I want to see if Manson will possess the testicular fortitude to call the Dominica saving nice RSS to eliminate the menace that has already infested Dominica’s societies.

I live in the City of Toronto, and apart from “trees” the city’s sidewalks are flourished with beautiful thick hedges; with their roots entwined deep in the ground, there is no wind and rain that can uproot them.

There are trees all over the place causing the city to look beautiful; imagine the rural areas with the same design of hedges and other trees.

People, we do not have to live in the forest to have beautiful trees planted around us. We have so many flowering trees in Dominica, why not make good use of them?

The only problem is that some trees shed their leaves during the autumn months, we also have to be prepared to keep that in control. All of these initiatives can also provide jobs for the unemployed.

In fact, the Ministry should not just be telling people to plant trees. They should make this their priority, to see that trees and hedges are planted in all necessary areas, hence providing jobs for those who are unemployed

Please please please find out what trees are local to your area and will thrive before you go planting. Some trees, once abundant in some areas are almost gone. Work with forestry before getting saplings.

JI the crook, made a commitment that in one year he and whoever else would have planted 1 000 000 tress..
You first needed to ask him how many were actually planted..
Now Mr Cozier, it seem like once someone joins this corrupted DLP his senses fly to brutish beast..
It is not just telling people to plant trees brother. You will now find people listening to this “”commess” and plant trees in areas where they will soon be requires to cut them. What types of trees should be planted?
Where? Even the HOW to plant is important!!
I am not surprised you are now part of a group whose forte is stealing elections, other than that you all are a colony of mottenheads, devoid of any vestige of thought..
I will do my share, but won’t listen to you all garble.

Over the years, I have noticed something that is consistent with this government. They make statements, asking people to do this, that and the other. What I don’t see is a clear strategy to implement these initiatives. Just saying “plant trees in your yard, place of worship etc” will not get people to plant trees. Instead, there should be a plan developed by the professional to determine where the trees should be planted, what types of tree we need, how many tree we want planted, a scheme to distribute seedlings to people who are willing to make it happen. Also, as part of the NEP program, they should demonstrate to people that they are taking the lead on the program.
In addition they should do very targeted promotions of the program instead of these almost benign statements I read in the article. That statement would not spur me to plant anything.

Zandoli you are right on hear! I pray that someone will read this contribution of yours, and to seriously consider.

I really believe that talking does nothing, the ideas which are implanted in our minds –of course the good ones–should be nurtured to bring forth good fruits.

And that principle is for everything we plan to do for ours and the sake of the people around us–especially from the Government, for our Nation.
