$35-million loss for LIAT

The hangar after the fire

Regional airline LIAT has confirmed that the recent fire at its hangar at the VC Bird International Airport in Antigua caused millions of dollars in damage.

“Based on currently available information, LIAT estimates that insured losses from the June 10, 2012 fire at its hangar … will be approximately EC$35-million,” the company said in a just released statement.

According to the release, LIAT continues to maintain normal operations throughout its network.

Two office blocks, an aircraft hangar and an aircraft were gutted by the massive fire that swept through LIAT’s section of the VC Bird International Airport on Sunday (June 10) night.

According to a series of advisories issued by the company, the large fire started around 10:15 pm Sunday, and was only brought under control about 12 hours later.

There were no reports of injury or loss of life.

Might have been a better deal then if we had trumped up and bailed out REDjet at a cost of $30 Million?

I see small-mindedness is roaming among comments again. Think of it people, whether allegedly set-up or not, LIAT well need the money, and if there were to not get it then all they doing is cutting off the least profitable destinations, like us here in Dominica. Already American Eagle closing their operations, is now LIAT have a monopoly.

On what facts you basing your statement that we are least profitable destinations? Did you know that every passenger that lands in Antigua from British Airways on their way to Dominica takes a LIAT flight and for your info the last few times I came from the UK the LIAT plane to Dominica was packed and if there isn’t profit in that then they might as well just start giving the tickets for free!!!

It’s really difficult to know how to process this kind of news. One the one hand, instinct is to feel sorry that one of our own took such blow but…and it’s a big BUT…Anyone who travels with LIAT regularly knows the crap they put their passengers through. Headaches with LIAT is not the exception – it’s the norm. When you tell someone that you traveled on LIAT with no issues whatsoever, they almost wanna ask you who you slept with to make that happen.

As difficult as it is to admit, on some level, you almost feel like this was well-deserved. True, it will ultimately still be us shouldering the cost, but still…are we treated like “one of their own” when they keep us holed up in a little waiting room for 8 hours with no news other than “flight delayed”? Or when our luggage ends up vacationing three islands away from us? Or when while flying over Guadeloupe they announce “by the way, we not stopping in Antigua anymore”? Karma doesn’t joke people.

… or when you buy your ticket online and they give you hells to board the plane
… or when you miss a flight because of their inefficiency and then they tell you that you have to pay to have your flight changed and that costs almost the price of a new ticket.

It’s really difficult to know how to feel about this news.

While I am interested in all of this, DNO I need your help! Where is Roosevelt Skerrit? The Prime Minister of Dominica has been missing in action for two weeks now and no one says a thing.
Is he on vacation celebrating his 40th B Day?
As a tax payer and citizen of Dominica I have a right to know.

Is it a 35 Million Dollor loss or a 35 Million Dollar claim?

      June 15, 2012

And what is the difference? They have loss $35 million, they have claimed $35 million in losses what the hell is the difference?

What if one claims to suffer a loss $35M but the actual loss when assessed is $20M or perhaps $50M? Is the claim and the actual loss the same? Isn’t the $35M an estimated loss on the basis of which a claim may be made but this may or may not be the actual loss suffered by the company? Claimed loss may not necessarily = actual loss.

People of the Caribbean, the reason why LIAT is going through these punishment from Allah is because of what their hands have earned. When Caribbean Star was up and running their prices were very reasonable and competitive. As soon as Caribbean Star went out of business and LIAT had some monopoly their increased their rates dramatically.

It is due to LIAT’s greed that Allah has severely punished them. It is sad that such an airline which has served the Caribbean for over half a century but this is the end of the unrepentant transgressors. This is naturally going to affect many jobs but when you build your foundation on evil and unfairness this is the end result. Will the Caribbean people learn lessons and take heed?

Did you take into consideration that the increase was possibly because the price of fuel increased as well? Sigh!
