Caricom blocked from landing in Haiti

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados — The Caribbean Community’s emergency aid mission to Haiti, comprising heads of government and leading technical officials, failed to secure permission Friday to land at that devastated country’s airport, now under the control of the USA.

Consequently, the Caricom “assessment mission” that was to determine priority humanitarian needs resulting from the mind-boggling earthquake disaster last Tuesday had to travel back from Jamaica to their respective home destinations.

On Friday afternoon, the US State Department confirmed signing two Memoranda of Understanding with the Government of Haiti that made “official that the United States is in charge of all inbound and outbound flights and aid offloading”.

Further, according to the agreements signed, US medical personnel “now have the authority to operate on Haitian citizens and otherwise render medical assistance without having to wait for licences from Haiti’s Government”.

Uh, the problem here is not whether or not Caricom goes to Haiti to “see” whatever they went to see, the complaint is ” supposedly” that the USA is not letting in the planes with help and supplies from other Help organizations ( or governments) land at the Touissant Louverture Airport, incidentally that causes DELAY in help getting to the Haitians. The actions that where taken by president Obama where fast and more or less efficient, but diplomatically speaking wrong, he should’ve sent his marines as an integral group of the ONU’s already proclaimed authority: MINUSTAH…

  2. January 18, 2010

they should have blown the plane out of the skies what the hell could they be going to see death and destruction , the people needed food and water not “politricans” coming for a photo-op, they should have been the first people in Haiti where were they, now they can all talk about what is not going right ,shut up and get out .

why so much resentment for the u.s? When they’ve been the country that has come to the aide of so many other countries both big and small. In war time and peace time they have. I’m not saying they don’t have their faults and I’m not saying no one else is helping but without the U.S the world would be a much much different place. But I can see where we can be ungrateful… Another thing to those on Obamas back about promises not fulfilled, he isn’t a dictator, he doesn’t have the only say when it comes to decision making. Please understand the U.S Legislative system before you come to such misinformed conclusion.. Majority of decision has to go before congress.. and with the amount of challenge and opposition he faces in congress.. I think he is doing the best he can.. Politics is a balances act and its not as simple as dominican politics….

good to see we got some perceptive dominicans who can analyze situations and come to sensible conclusions. I was the biggest Obama supporter leading up to the elections, but to be honest since he took office he has been a major failure. His approval rating has declined drastically bcuz he looks unable to to deliver on any of his major promises.

Plus he is freakin soft on terrorism and believed that playing nice would make the terrorist want to stop America. Well Obama is a black man with African roots but look just a few weeks ago A BLACK MAN FROM AFRICA was tryin to blow up on airline.

No i’m not goin off on a tangent my point is that Obama needed something to make him look freaking good and Haiti presented that opportunity. Obama u breaking my heart lol i expected more

I believe the americans just want all the attention pointed to them. They are not in the least interested in the Haitians. There were so many other countries that arrived in Haiti before the americans did yet all you see in the news is that an american group did this that and the other. nothing really to give and explosion of help. I think those americans are just downright out for the attention to be placed on them as if they are the only ones out in haiti trying to help those unfortunate victims

@WTF, I think you completely misunderstood my post. Read carefully please. The US really don’t care. They are desperately trying to repair their international image after Iraq and they are exploiting the Haitian tragedy to do so. That is what I meant.

@Just a Thought, I guess Hillary Clinton could have watched CNN or BBC and not make that trip to Haiti. I said in another blog that whatever foreigners do, we have no problems with that but whenever our own try to take some initiative, it is so wrong. Go figure.

If this is true how dear, the US turn back CARICOM Leaders from intering Haiti , a member of caricom. Haiti is part of CARICOM and is in the Caribbean. We accept your help but we need our caribbean leaders to make an imput too. we want an explantion for this humiliating act, the media need to have that in the news. THEIR ARE LAWS GOVERNING CARICOM MEMBER S,PART OF IS TO COME TO MEMBERS SATES IN TIMES OF DISASTER.

to every one that thinks like jayson, remenber the term to many cooks spoil the brorth.what ever dominica and the carribbean has to do for haiti .we will have time, some body had to take charge or if not it would be more problem in haiti.america saw that if they didnot move in ,they would have to deal with 1.5 millon haiti landing on american soil.and this would much more costly.remember that america has been the commaned center from bay one.

First of all CARICOM leaders were not the only leaders blocked by the US.

France has raised the issue of US’s over-dominance in the relief effort, thereby raising a mini diplomatic storm.

Secretary of States Hillary Clinton quickly flew to Haiti and promised that U.S. quake relief efforts would be closely coordinated with local officials. This was seen as designed to counter any notion of a too-intrusive American involvement in the aftermath of the quake.

America is trying desperately to show its good standing in the world after the debacles of Iraq and Afghanistan. This is even more after the US’s unilateral action in Iraq which sees its rating around the globe plummet to all time lows.

By the way the matter of blocking the CARICOM team will be discussed with Hillary Clinton when she meets with the Jamaican PM on a brief stop in Jamaica from Haiti. No word from that yet. We will have to wait and see.

I wonder if Gordon Brown was flying in if they would have denied him entry?

It’s almost like you going to check on your brother at his home after an incident has been reported and when you arrive a strange face appears at the door and tells you to go home because you’re brother put them in charge and that they don’t want you comming here to screw anything up. And you there thinking, ‘why couldn’t my ‘brother’ have told me that himself?’

We’re very grateful for the assistance that the U.S is giving to our brothers in Haiti but It would be nice if the U.S. could at least show a little respect to our regional leaders.
