Cautious optimism among some as OECS readies for ‘free movement’

Nationals in the six independent member states of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are expecting to be able to move freely in search of jobs armed with only an identification card and an immigration entry/departure form come Monday, as the sub-region presses ahead with forging an economic union.

In reaction to the move, some online readers appeared to sound notes of cautious optimism and thinly veiled suspicion.

Nationals of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Kitts and Nevis will no longer be granted limited entry visas to each other’s countries.

i fully support this incentive, our histories and cultures are rather similar, and as individual small states it’ll be nice for us to act as one.

I say this, but i am strongly against the CARICOM crap which will only allow big countries like Jamaica, T&T, Guyana and Barbados to take advantage of us just like they do us when they selecting the WI cricket team. Leave them in their mess and let us rasie as one.

integration will never happen, each country for itself, my child and i were treated as refugees from out of space in antigua, when went there on holidays, they held his passport each time, place us to sit on a chair, on our return i had to follow an immigration office all over the airport i was given the passport only after we cleared security

It is not six OECS countries it is five. I say so because I live in antigua and is still expected to go for time come August 1st. I still have to continue going for a work permit because Antigua did not put that in their domestic laws. Antigua wants all the benefits but at the same time do not want to stand by what they voted for.

I don’t think the co -operation between the the Police Forces are strong enough. We need something like a Regional Bereau of Investigations.

I read the first report about this and also the comment that we Dominican had. When we think the things that we say are not being noticed think again. We seat here and comment and say that Dominicans are not interested in this crap when it comes to free movement but i can guarantee that the person that said that will be the first to try and enter some one else country. If their is no other reason for us as Dominicans to ahve a national ID its now.Am not talking about a voter ID card cause this is not about politics. I am talking about an ID the represent prove that we are Dominican and in a wider sense Cari-com citizens. Social Security cars wont do and no one want to be walking every where they go with a passport in their pocket. Sense we want to do so much things we see coming from the US, why don’t we take a page from their book. Why no make a passport Card.

Im only Hoping that Dominicans can keep up with the number of highly qualified caricom nationals that will be flooding our shores in search of jobs. Many other caribbean countries have ensured that their people are well educated but Dominica has failed in this regard. we need to put measures in place to ensure our people have an edge over the others in our own country.
