Helmin Wiels, a lawyer and leader of the popular Pueblo Soberano political party in Curacao, was assassinated on Sunday afternoon.

Wiels, an outspoken supporter of independence and crusader against corruption in the Dutch Caribbean territory, was reportedly shot by a pair of assailants while at the beach.

In a statement, Curacao Prime Minister Daniel Hodge said the government condemned the attack, urging calm. Hodge is currently serving as Prime Minister in a provisional capacity after being appointed in late 2012.

DNO you guys seem way to comfortable in your top position and so you are conveniently stifling people’s opinion. It is obvious that DNO has intensified its censorship effort and are apparently protecting the Dominica government administration.
I say so because comments that I have made never get posted. I can also say without doubt that these comments are in no way slanderous or libelous.
    I will keep watching.
We may not be paying to utilize your web site DNO but we are customers directly or indirectly.

Whenever people speak the truth and comment about the truth there will be opposers and right on DNO as we observe. These people have wicked hearts.
There is so much wickedness and immorality in the world that it is amazing God has not yet rained down fire and brimstone on it and punish the wicked. He is patient. It will come if not in our lifetime. Those wicked people who predecease us will meet their eternal judgment for their sins. Let us console ourselves with the fair and just judgment of God.
Those who stand up for the truth and fairness will not receive God’s punishment. Therefore, wicked people, eat your heart out. Due to your wickedness, once you arrive at Hell’s Gates, to your eternal detriment, your soul will languish forever in Satan’s cauldron of everlasting fire.
May his soul rest in peace. Amen!

interesting times in the Caribbean for those brave to fight the slide to greed and public theft, all our lives will be in danger. The Dutch Government could have done more to protect him and the people owed him his safety!!!!!1

The Dutch govt. should have domne more? Of course, he did not deserve to die like that but don’t forget he wanted independence from the Dutch. Like telling your father you don’t want him in your life but insist he must protect you and pay your bills? And then he dismissed his own bodyguard? That does not make sense. Anyway, may his soul rest in peace.

She is not totally independent, but she is needy and past broke. Why? because people elected to high govt. positions are mainly interested in lining their pockets and instead of putting the interests and strong points of the island first…..just do as they please. No accountability. Sound familiar?

Dominicans make themselves broke. They keep voting for family and friends instead of who is better qualify for position of leader. This island have so much potential but people are ignorant and keep fighting progress; take some accountability man.

Sad to hear that, my birth country is not heard about; except for this kind of criminal activity. Visited once and I was very impressed, love my birth country love the people; but this is very sad. We must not allow politics to take us to that level. Oh no. My thoughts are with his family.

Very sad. Imagine that, assassinating the man because of his anti-corruption stance.

    That is evil…

I do not want to blight DOminica, but to be honest we are not very far. I am surprised at how the air in DOmiica is so Politically charged. These talkshows, both ” Heng” and “Matt in the Morning” should be used as menas to educate our people on matters such as proper care, world events, regional events. SHould not be used to bash the Government or the opposition. Imagine a lady got beaten at DOnkey Beach and that was a topic for discussion? Really how does that educate us? Dont talk about the Heng they not so much better.

Recall what occurred prior to when Dominica achieved Statehood. Consider during election and what occurs. They also do this during carnival celebrations and at other times. Some people are wicked and have bad minds.
The consolation is that the Lord has observed and knows those who kill and harm others. They will receive their just recompense in his good time. We do know that they will not escape. Therefore, what good it is for them to snuff out people’s life and the eternal repercussion that will follow even though they are caught, sentenced, imprisoned or executed.

I pray for the soul of the deceased and hope that such EVIL doesn’t visit us in Dominica. We have our deep political issues but not to the extend that we will want to assassinate any of our political leaders whether it is Green Blue Red Black Orange Colorless or Yellow etc.

We hear foolishness on MATT IN THE MORNING all of the time and quite recently we heard some aness at a DLP meeting in Town. I don’t care which party that you support but calls for the death of any politician or public figure or anyone as a matter of fact is damn well wrong and unacceptable and anyone who encourages this is evil. The statement by the lawyer on the DLP platform in Roseau is 100% wrong……calls for violence of any form is wrong. I don’t know how we call ourselves “blessings” and in the same vein ask for “blood”….I guess I have “bless sins” also.
Let us live in peace in our loving but imperfect Dominica.
Sympathies to the people of Curacao.

In fact, those who threaten people, encite hatred and violence should be immediately arrested and charged. Their movements should be under surveillance including wire-tapping their telephone lines. They also deserve imprisonment. Dominica may need better policing.
It is against the Law of the land to threaten anyone, call for their murder and encourage others to do so. Those who do will also pay the price to our God. Let this be known.
This is why we should use the Internet to spread the truth; not evil and to denounce it.
