Grenada to revive program selling citizenship

passportGrenada announced Wednesday that it intends to revive a program that will essentially allow investors from across the globe to buy citizenship on the sparsely-populated Caribbean island known for its beaches and spice-scented forests.

The strategy is part of a growing trend in the Caribbean to drum up much-needed revenue on tiny islands struggling with massive public debt. The nearby islands of Dominica and St. Kitts & Nevis allow investors to secure local citizenship in return for a healthy contribution or real estate investment. Cash-strapped Antigua & Barbuda is planning on launching its own program this year.

Is this not sad that selling citizenship and passports as a condition for drumming up investments? I am not enthused by this. It is like selling your country to strangers.
I hope those investors will be properly investigated prior to accepting them as legitimate, rich investors and that they are not involved in any shady lifestyle deals and transactions.

A very dangerous practice…It really have not contibuted meaningfully to the nations and its nationals at all.
It has only brought about more hardship and punitive red tape, from the advance nations,Canada, the U.S,Great Britain,on these nations ordinary citizens.
The politicians are never the ones in the direct line of fire;they are deplomats,so they don’t really care
Thumbs up,do away with it,try something else..

Investor? How many genuine investors have every bought into that program and created jobs for Caribbean people?

Just admit that things are bad and you need to raise revenue by any means necessary. Don’t try to sugar-coat it by using the word “investors”. At least be honest with yourself and the people.
