Guyana’s US$48m rice for oil deal with Venezuela

Guyana has agreed to ship US$48 million worth of rice to Venezuela to help pay for the oil it receives from its neighbour each month under preferential terms, officials said today

The government will export 50,000 tonnes of unmilled rice and 30,000 tonnes of white rice to Venezuela, said Jag Singh, director of Guyana’s Rice Development Board. The deal marks a US$10 million increase from last year’s agreement, he said.

    Article 3 of the petro caribe Energy co-operation agreemnet between the local governments and venezuela states ; ” with regards to deferred payments, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of venezuela shall willingly accept partial payments in the form of products , goods and or services agreed upon before hand by the parties based on prefrential rates propsosed by the local government. the products that the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela may purchase at Prefrential rates may include goods and services that shall be determined by the parties and that are believed to be adversely affected by trade policies of rich countries.”
