SEVERAL residents and business owners this afternoon gathered at a plot of land in Gregory Park, St Catherine, watching helplessly as Portmore Municipal Council officials and the police carried out an operation to evict them from land they have been squatting on.

Mayor of Portmore Keith Hinds said the people were informed several months ago that the lands would be needed for development.

What a strong message to the squatters at Melville Hall; the everyone’s doing it philosophy, if Jamaica’s doing it, then we can do it in Dominica

Though DNO’s responsibility is to report the facts and they do their best, I applaud them; this message will remove public sympathy for squatters in my humble opinion.

As I’ve mentioned before, when one squatts land, they risk being evicted from the property. Of course, they are human beings, naturally many have attachments to that land, thus let us find an amicable solution to deal with our situation in Dominica. There needs communication and a just proposal to resolve this problem with regards to housing replacements.

I ALWAYS MAINTAIN SQUATTERS SHOULD BE STOPPED AS SOON AS THEY TRY TO SET UP
THESE BUILDINGS…I GUESS IN DA THE PHYSICAL PLANNING DEPT DOES NOT HAVE THE
RESOURCES AND STAFF TO POLICE THE ENTIRE COUNTRY…GUESS THE AUTHORITIES
HAVE TO GIVE LOCAL AUTHORITIES SOME KIND OF POWERS IN THIS REGARD. SOME OF THESE SHACKS ARE JUST TOO UNSIGHTLY ALL OVER THE COUNTRY

Somebody ask why it cannot be done in D’ca as well? Bcos those Ministers of Government busy trying to buy those squatters’ votes, so they cannot take decisive action on squatting.
