LIAT advises of new St. Lucia tax for travellers

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, May – LIAT wishes to advise its customers and the public in general that, effective May 1, 2011, the St. Lucia Air and Seaports Authority has introduced a new tax of US$35.00 known as “Airport Development Charge” which is to be collected by all airlines.

All customers departing St. Lucia, including those making connections in St. Lucia will see the new US$35 tax reflected in the cost of their ticket.

With the addition of the new US$35 “Airport Development Tax” by the St. Lucia Air and Seaports Authority, taxes and charges paid on LIAT tickets may in some instances represent more than 50 per cent of the ticket price.

One step forward and two steps backwards. Now the regional airports will do the same for any development to their ports of entry.

We can all send a message to them. Avoid St.Lucia at all costs.

I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MR ALLAN CHASTENET COME ON AIR AND CLARIFY THAT ONE…..THANKS FOR THE INFO LIAT..PUT IT OUT THERE THAT PEOPLE KNOW ITS NOT YOU THAT JUST INCREASING YOU FARES RATHER ITS THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE CARIBBEAN THAT SLIP IN DIFFERENT TAXES HERE AND THERE THAT CAUSES AIRFARES TO BE SO HIGH..

I cannot blame LIAT high fares, A freien showed e the LIAT base fare to some destinations nd it’s very cheap but all dem government taxes makes it sky rocket. Governments need to lighten up.

Thisis a good opportunity for Dominica to start promoting itslf as the premier caribbean destinaion spot by lowering our taxes to attract business and tourists alike and we should start adverising.

But what the A***** is wrong with these caribbean governments!!!! They make it difficult to travel because they harass ur a*** at the airports………… They make it difficult to do business bacause they do not create the enabling environment …………… It is already expensive to travel on Live Island Any Time…………….. and then is tax in ur a*** again ……………. Then they run their clappers about CSME and regional integration, free movement of people and single economic space!!!! I think they should all just shut up!! If you dont want people to come to St Lucia just say so because caribbean people dont have the disposable income to give you an additional $35 US. What i going to drink piton and bounty with ? So just in case im not hungry or i dont drink rum while i stop over in St Lucia you finding a way to take my money!!!!…………….. but wait there is one way to avoid all of this just dont go to or connect in St Lucia !!!!

Can’t believe this is the same St. Lucia, whose Minister for tourism met with U.K. ministers in London last Sept., as part of a Caribbean delegation, to protest against the Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax introduced by the U.K. …because of the detrimental effect it would have on their tourism business!! How is the introduction of their own tax, on top of all this, going to help that situation? What has caused this 180degree turn between then and now?

But why they imposing that tax on people who are just connecting in St. Lucia and have no intention of even stepping out of the airport?

LIAT needs to take a look at their schedule to make sure as few flights as possible connect in that island. This is crazy considering all the take that has been going on regarding the cost of travel within the Caribbean.

Seems like the government of these islands is hell bent on crippling the countries rather than helping and encouraging growth.

Anyone ever really looked into the actual cost of importing an item? Vat is added ontop of everything else.
Teh government needs to review and revise the method of calculation for imports : example: I can get abox here for $10, but I prefer to pay for express freight at $60. Why should I pay duties on freight that does not reflect a fixed value????? Why should I pay import taxes based on the freight. A $10 item sent to me, by my auntie who paid for fed ex one day, i end up paying duty on a $78us because she chose to pay $68 to get it here, plus environmental levy, and this and that and THEN you adding a so called 15% VAT,
which is much HIGHER THAN 15% WHEN YOU WORK IT OUT. yOU NOT FOOLING MY BLACK SELF ANYMORE….

People importing for retail should pay on CIF, good for personal use should be charged on the COST only……

This place is full of cr*p. And it only hurts teh country.

You do pay duty on the CIF value (= Cost, Insurance & Freight). Freight is a cost and increases the value (=cost) of an item. My advice, express freight high-value items only, avoid courier service wherever you can and for small packets use the postal service.

What is up with these people? Nothing but greed and crass stupidity. Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. Fleecing customers that come to your shores to spend their hard-earned money and the poor natives that are obliged to travel and have little option. Well, tourists do have options as you will find out when your visitor numbers decrease as package tour operators will promote alternative, cheaper destinations.

Then the will come crying that “LIAT” is to blame for the high cost of intra-regional travel. They cannot see past their noses. Sometime charging more does not equate to higher revenue. Except by the time they find out, they may have done damage to their economy.
