LIAT pilots safely land with one engine in St. Maarten

Pandemonium reportedly broke out on a LIAT flight from St. Kitts to St. Maarten when one of the engines stopped functioning.

The incident occurred on Monday evening and press reports coming out of St. Maarten indicate that passengers had to be restrained by the stewardess because they thought that the aircraft was going down in the Caribbean Sea.

According to reports the Dash 8 plane landed safely with the one functioning engine at the Princess Juliana International Airport at about 8:30 p.m. Several passengers kissed the ground in happiness after the landing.

“I thought that we were all dead, when I saw the engine stop in mid air, and many of the passengers were crying,” one passenger told The St Maarten Today.

There has been no information coming from LIAT on the matter and as of Thursday reports from St. Maarten said the plane in question was still at the airport.

LIAT is simply the best! Whether they r forever late, their tickets are expensive I don’t think no other airline can compare. We have to give them their respect. The pilot and crew need a well deserve clap and we should really appreciate them for their calmness and skills to come out of a terrible situation. I don’t see the need for any negative comments. Just thank the lord that they were able to land safely and everyone was ok.

With God all things are possible. And it was indeed God’s hand that guided the pilots to safely land that plane. Without him they couldn’t have done anything that was done . To God be the glory.

We appreciate the action of the liat pilots in bringing the plane to a safe landing. But seriously people, even though such an event do not happen every day with Liat, they happen every day elsewhere and do not make the news.Pilots are trained specifically for that scenario. airplanes are also designed to temporarily fly with one engine. Indeed they are specific emergency procedures for such a situation! If a large loaded bus on the Portsmouth highway blew a tire but the driver was able to bring the vehicle under control should that make news? No,I don’t think so either. There are serious and potentially deadly and missed catastrophic situations everywhere, but not all need make news.

As an airline service you need to give good service, and always ensure that the passengers lives are not endangered. After LIAT already giving poor service they still have poor engines.

    nothing new…
It happens relatively often, just doesn’t make the news.

Good thing is that airplane can actually be flown with one engine.

The decision to continue the flight depends on the distance to the nearest airport where they can get clearance and drop the passengers safely then the crew flies with one engine to the nearest hub where they can get repairs.

Oh God, this news now when I’m flying out on Sunday? I’m already such a nervous flyer. This surely won’t make me feel any better.

LIAT does have some of the best pilots. Let’s hope the standards will be maintained. The fire a few weeks ago may have impacted on their quality of repairs/maintenance. In almost 60 years of flying, I can only recall 2 crashes. One fatal in 1986. Their customer service stinks and need serious improvement, but I guess better a good pilot than a courteous customer rep. :)) LIAT claims that it flys to 25 Caribbean destinations with more than 700,000 passengers per year. They have a good safety record so far, so let’s hope that continues and give praise to God that we do not have many accidents.

    • July 6, 2012

LIAT has the best Pilots, the Customer Service is better than that of many carriers that comes to our region and i’m thankfull for them.

If, God forbid, the aircraft had crashed, for some it would be like witnessing a UWP victory at the Polls. How sadist we are.We are finding verything negative to say about a most heroic act by the pilots. yes, they are professionals but they are human too. They rose above the human weakness and did not panick. Hats off to LIAT, the First Officer and his assistant on that flight.

People Please! What is wrong with Mr. Piper? Say what you wish about not giving credits to the Pilots.. Liat have some of the Best Pilots in the reigon. Have you ever had to fly one full people on a single engine? do you know what it means when a plane goes “off BALANCE”? Are you even aware of “what could have been” what can I say? hmmm. God is always in control.. These things happen all the time. If we are to compare liat with all the other stuff going on with other airlines, take off verses crashes, I would give them an “A”. please I have no shares in Liat, but sometimes we need to appreciate and support our own. Thumbs up to the Captain and crew. they remained focused on the task at hand.

Most airline crashes are pilot error, usually because of his/her inability to apply the training they received. Better know as “panic”. It may be all in a day’s work, but in situations like this is where one displays how well he comprehended his training. Thank God these pilots did it well.

Why didn’t you blame God for shutting down the engine? Why do you attibute the fact that the plane landed safely to God. The plane landed safely because it was engineered to fly on one engine and proper pilot training.

God had no hand in this either way.

But the aircraft is designed to fly on one engine. Furthermore, the pilots are trained for such an evantuality. Although that was not a routine landing, there was nothing heroic about that. That is all in a days work. These guys are professionals.
