Not so friendly skies for drug runners

More famously known for their targeted assassination techniques in the Middle East, the United States “Predator drone” technology is now being brought into the drug-trafficking fight in the Caribbean.

Reports coming out of the US are that the Department of Homeland Security has been testing its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the Bahamas for more than a year and is ready to go operational over areas used by smuggling boats in the sea lanes of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

I believe that the u.s. should take care of all its problems at home before trying to police the world. I know that there is a drug problem in the Caribbean but the Caribbean leaders should address the problems and come up with ways to solve them. The u.s. just think they should be the ones to interfere in other nations’ affairs.

“Justice and Truth” makes a lot of great comments, no doubt. That does not mean all his comments are right for us, especially on this topic. I would like to know who is monitoring the import of deadly pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, guns and ammunition into our region, coming from empire. Those drones are going to make certain more of these illegal activities are carried out in our basin and mess up our young people, then blame the parents and our governments. You people need to get your tails from between your legs and wake the heck up befor it’s too late!

No matter what sort of equipments are invented and used, the drug trade is never going to end. Not in the Caribbean or the US or anywhere else. Too many ‘big boys’ involved and one covering up for the next.

It’s a bit troubling to me how the US can dictate and decide they can fly over Caribbean waters. I admit there is a drug trafficking problem but it’s just troubles me that Caribbean nations seems to be in the shadows of the US dealing.

I agree with you whole heartedly but sorry to say, NWO is pissed off because the little guys are cutting in on their profit. They created the drug trade and the little guys are finding the loop holes, taking advantage of it and some not so-pleased-money-laundering, drug trafficking king-pin is not so happy about that. They keep us (man kind) in economic slavery by denying us free enterprise and trade, while they spend big drug money to enslave us (mankind) even more and ensure that we never, ever have access to happiness, freedom, justice and free speech.

This is the beginning of the U.S. surveillance. The authorities are aware of the amount of drug trafficking which takes place in those countries. Illegal drugs are exported to the U.S. on a great scale and frequently. It is in the interest of the U.S. to help curb the flow of drugs from those islands to other parts of the world as the U.S.
Remember the man ‘Coke’? He got 25 years in prison. You do know that drugs were shipped to the U.S. and elsewhere in exchange for guns, the latter specifically in the U.S.
The U.S. is doing those islands, the government of the islands a great favor in helping to combat illegal drugs. Someday, there may be more planes flying over the Caribbean. The U.S. is to be thanked.

    • namich2008
      June 26, 2012

You are a damn fool if you believe that this surveillance is for monitoring drug activities alone. Saying there is a drug problem that warrants this level of surveillance is just a strategic move by the US to get these drones flying over our back yards in the Caribbean.

No one is letting me believe that these drones are not capable of providing data to the US authorities, that allow them to actively map out our terrain so they can use at their discretion.

In light of this, I want to ask a few questions. Are flight plans for these aerial vehicles disclosed to the relevant countries? Secondly, are there any local representative on hand to see first hand what is being monitored.

As Caribbean people we have to understand what we are getting into. The United States have helped the Caribbean tremendously….no one is disputing this fact. However granting them complete, uncontrolled authority to our air space, so they can carryout these drones surveillance is a dangerous policy.
Last year was Bahamas…sightings in Jamaica. Soon it will be another sister island. So many innocent people are being massacred by this drone surveillance program of the US administration. This is particularly true in Pakistan and Afghanistan…where the excuse for murdering innocent people has become “he is/was a Taliban leader”

      • Michie
        June 26, 2012

Why else would the United States want to monitor Dominica or other Caribbean countries? The end of the cold war was the end of American interests in the Caribbean.

There was a summit held in Trinidad and Tobago during President Obama’s first year in office. This summit was held to address security concerns following the events of 9/11 and how these two regions could work together to combat these issues.
Drones have been flying over these islands for some time now. Don’t blame the U.S. Government. Blame the Caribbean leaders who argeed to the policies that were placed before them.

It only lasts for a while. Everything comes to an end someday.
Whoever thought that Bin Laden would be caught? The speculation for years was that he was ill and was dead. This was a lucky catch and should teach those people a lesson but they will never learn since they continue to ply their trade. The drones will catch them in time.

Like any other commodity, illegal substances get their value through the basic market dynamics of supply and demand. Whereas the US drug fighting effort has largely focused on the supply side, not sufficient effort has been or is being placed on the demand side of the equation. The only reason there is so much money to be made in drug trafficking is because the Americans are heavy consumers.

Rather than dealing with the contributing factors for the huge consumption of drugs in the US-hence the demand for the illegal drugs. the US government engage the services of private contractors to build more and larger prisons to lock up young people- the majority of whom are young black men for petty drug offences, while the big dealers, who are well protected make millions.

But be careful with these drones in the Caribbean skies. We cannot take anything for granted, especially when dealing with the mighty US. Not because the US says these drones are used for tackling the drug trade should we be so naïve to think that the services of these drones will be limited to just surveillance for drugs. The capabilities of this advance technology is enormously powerful and in fact the value of the drone is not just its stealth but its ability to collect a wide range of sophisticated information and to process that information in quick time.

    • Justice and Truth
      June 25, 2012

      @ nature girl

One more thing, they may be unemployed. Where do they get the money to purchase those vehicles and to live such a lavish lifestyle? Of course it would raise eye brows and make others suspicious of them. The same applies overseas. Their schemes and drug trafficking will not last forever.

  25. June 25, 2012

I am not saying fighting the drug war is wrong by any means as the problem does need to be tackled. However, I would think USA should try flying these drones over their own Country FIRST. Maybe try flying over OAKSTERDAM CALIFORNIA, the USA POT Cultivation Capital according to plenty of literature on the internet. A sane suggestion would be to start by tackling the drug problem within, first, before tackling other countries drug problems. Oaksterdam also has a University. If you do a simple google search, YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE what courses this so called university teach’s, I still can’t believe it is LEGAL? SAM is utterly confused on their OWN Drug Policies, what the heck you doin Auntie Sam? legal / illegal — depends on the State?

      @ Toronto Canada

I also reside there. Maybe you should speak about Toronto. There are enough drug addicts and drug trafficking which resulted in numerous gang murders of our young black men. Can you count how many have died in the past, approximately 10 years? Probably over 40 of them, young lives snuffed out due to drug trafficking. There will be more in future. What a waste of God-given precious lives.
Canada should have such an airplane or a few flying over Canada. We could advise Prime Minister Harper about it. What do you think?

      • June 26, 2012

@ Justice and Truth — Sure, I can speak about Toronto. As for speaking to Mister Harper, there is no need to as we already have air patrol in place. For well over a Decade we have a Police division that fly helicopters all over Ontario in the search from the skies for weed cultivation operations. This weed task force has been very successful in their duties. Last I read the task force was about 30 police officers, and this is their full time job, just searching for weed growing operations. If you are ever north of Toronto and you see a black helicopter flying at low levels back and forth, then you have seen this task force too. Funny enough, when you look from the skies, weed plants stick out big time, almost like a little kid has used a highlighter overtop,.. I dont know how to explain it, but it sticks out like a sore thumb from the skies.

You need to be informed… they are implementing drone use within their boarders as-well. This has already been announced ! Further more, if there was another agenda, it would be to monitor Venezuelan and Chinese influence in the region as these are not the best friends of the USA whom are taking foot right in there back yard. This is the troubling news I’ve read for the month of June. USA can’t clean up their own back yard, what makes me think they could clean ours? NWO is the agenda and it’s all in the name of fighting drug traffickers. These should be circling the US Mexican border and the pharmaceutical companies in the USA, Canada and EU, in our waters.

      @ Rastafari

The U.S. has an obligation to assist other countries, especially the vulnerable ones. Smarten up!
The other countries can perform their own surveillance. They are big enough and have enough money. The U.S. is helping those countries that are not rich or not so rich.

      • Rastafari
        June 26, 2012

:-x @Justice and Truth (Your sybername suggests otherwise) – I agree with you, they are helping…themselves @ the expense of our ignorance and false sense of security. Let me ask you 2 very logical questions, How intense is the American surveillance effort against drug trafficking, and has it been effective? I’ve been smart enough to know what the NWO is about and people like you are their support block. For all I care you could be one of their operatives who would sell your soul and people for gain. :-D

      • Delicious
        June 26, 2012

The U.S. will not do any thing if there is no benefit to them, so the question is: what are they going to benefit from this operation? Can they conduct drone operations in the inner cities to curb the sale of illegal guns and subsequently, gun violence? Too many young black men are murdered with illegal guns on a daily basis in the U.S. The Caribbean should be concerned and afraid, be very afraid

After observing the way that the American system operates, I can conclude that this is just an initial influx of the us military in the Caribbean. It is my honest opinion that, although the drug problem needs to be curbed, the Caribbean countries should try to upgrade their coast guard equipment instead of giving the US this avenue of exploitation.

    • Justice and Truth
      June 26, 2012

      @ Vigilant Dominican

Don’t know about that. However, the U.S. is more capable and, in the long run will prove more fruitful than those islands. The U.S. should be welcomed and appreciated in its effort of drug-fighting.

      • hmm
        June 27, 2012

The problem is they are hard to trust given their known track recording of exploiting crisis as an opportunity for military invasion. You would think that this is a really good move on their part to deploy such expensive technology to make sure our waters are safe from drug trafficking but do you really think that is their only motive? If you don’t take at least a few minutes to ponder their intentions then you can just muzzle your way into the herd and be a good sheep.
