The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) community has been told to celebrate the formation of an OECS economic union as an unprecedented accomplishment in the sub-region
In remarks at the signing ceremony for the treaty establishing the economic union, Len Ishmael, Director-General of the OECS, said the venture shows courage and determination of OECS leaders.
“They say, that history is made when people with great courage and uncommon vision, are put together…to be in the same place at the same time; tonight is such a moment,” said Ishmael.
She told the gathering in Basseterre, the economic union will better position the OECS to meet head-on a changing “geopolitical environment.”
“An OECS economic union will position the region to institutionalize approaches to the rest of the world, harmonizing policy on multiple fronts, and here in our region, allow for the free movement of all OECS citizens.
“While much can be said about the work which still lies ahead, tonight is not the moment to be daunted by those future prospects. Tonight, we are deliberate, in our choice to celebrate history in the making,” she stated.
