Panama Papers: the Caribbean connection

panama papers

The publication of an online database has led to more information being revealed on Caribbean havens.

The Panama Papers scandal has made headlines across the globe and on Monday the publication of a searchable online database for the papers by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists revealed in greater detail the connection to the Caribbean.

Statistics in the database reveal that the majority of the companies that appear in the Panama Papers are incorporated in the British Virgin Islands. Panama has the second largest number of companies, followed by the Bahamas.

The information was released Monday in a searchable, downloadable database that includes the registered names and addresses of over 320,000 offshore companies. It also includes the names of those listed as shareholders or directors of these companies.

The Bahamas, which depends on its financial services industry for survival, is now indelibly tied to the Panama Papers and will have a hard time shaking off its international reputation as a ‘tax haven.’

Even with clear evidence from international arenas, the brain-washed Dominicans are still resolute in their support ……….. Why is the Government of Dominica named as a shareholder in one of those companies? What is the value of this company and where is the money lodged?
I’m waiting for Tony the Good Prophet to start suing left, right and center. Every concerned Dominican should sound their trumpet loudly and give Tony some more work to do. Let’s see how he will explain that one.

You never mentioned the name of the company that The Government is a share shareholder of,but I’m assuming it to be Shanghai-La International Development holding. The company was incorporated in Dominica in 1991 to be the investment holding company for the Caribbean Shangri La Project pursuant to an agreement between the Government of Dominica(Freedom Party Government at the time) with Project plans to build an international airport and to set up an economic citizenship programme.

We all know about the fiasco regarding the Layou River Hotel,The PM went to court in the BVI on behalf of Dominica to claim the land back during a liquidation process and the Government won the case, the court said The Government was unconditionally entitled to 51% of the share equity in Shangri La so that is how The Government become a shareholder, there is nothing illegal, shares were not bought in secret, this has nothing to do with laundering money. To be continued

As to your question. What is the value of this company and where is the money lodged. At the time the court awarded The Government 51% share equity, the company was in bankruptcy and liquidation proceedings, so what millions are you talking about.Your comment regarding brain washed Dominicans are still resolute in their support for the Government is somewhat foolish on your part If anyone is brainwashed is you, with your partisan political beliefs.

For many, many years, consistently, the true patriots of Dominica have been advocating against such criminal activities money-laundering, corruption of all sorts, the links with foreign criminals, the plethora of companies being formed, cashing on the secret deals involving millions upon millions of dollars. the involvement of “Big Wigs” that network of those here and abroad, who have sallied the NAME of DOMINICA.

Dominica now international for all the wrong reasons. Panama Papers. 500 companies? secret lodgings in Panama? millions? maybe billions?

Remember that lose? Up to now we do not know the name/s of those debtors and exactly what happened.
    https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/business/nbd-reports-net-loss-of-4-4-million-in-2015/

Impact of PANAMA PAPERS damning to Dominica. Big Time. The culprits must pay. No turning back. No letting off. The pressure must continue every day.

Remember the $1 million plus lodged in the NBD by…..No…

Why do you make such ludicrous statements in you opening paragraph. Here is something you must know most of the companies named in The Panama Papers are not laundering money nor carrying out carrying out criminal activities. You statement quote “Up to now we do not know the name/s of those debtors and exactly what happened, referring to the National Bank. Do you know when you open an account with a Bank there are confidentiality clauses, so how do you want the Bank to disclose such information. Where did you come up with the idea that the reported loss in profit reported by the National Bank was due to the secret deals linked to The Panama Papers, wow.

Do you know that the Offshore Banking act in Dominica was passed by the UWP Government when they were in office. In those days Dominica was a major international financial center with large offshore Banking, payment processing companies, very lucrative business for the Government and lawyers. To be continued.

This is to compare what –ATestimonyofLoveby(HtebazileAnilReivax(4Jesus)– wrote on May 12, 2016 under the DNO title: “Attorney surprised his name……”

—- “Every time i go on my knees I always receive a message from the Devine one that the government of Dominica is as clean as the Jesus would want to. There is no corruption and as I have continuously stated Roosevelt Skerrit is the chosen one. Even Jesus had crooked followers. So the crooked lawyers and senior counsels are just being sent by the devil.Praise be to my PM.”

As I speak I am listening to a UWP political meeting in the Soufriere Constituency and the more I listen the more I get upset. I am saying with the information seen on the Panama Papers Lennox and them could continue their meeting but somehow the people should be matching on the streets of Roseau, to the point that the people of Soufriere find themselves in Roseau as well.

The Panama papers revealed that their are 34 companies in Bdos, 280 in Antigua, Grenada has 3, JA has 4,St. Lucia 8, STV with 6, T&T – 6, and Dominica – 68. However what hurts me is, we don’t see the Government of any of the islands listed, except that of the corrupt Skerrit Government.

As a former laborite I am upset because I know if Rosie Douglas, my hero were alive he would be on the streets of Roseau, where these good for nothing ministers have their offices and he would not live until they all resign. Now is the time to take back Dominica. The world is watching and as we act, they will help us. Action…

While a man is made to pay thousands for asking questions about Shangila and the corruption that surrounds it, and Dominicans in certain quarters are rejoicing over that man’s payment of an accountant of that company, look the Panama Papers are exposing the ugliness of the company…..who laughs last always laughs the best…the more they try to turn Mr. Linton as a lunatic who just say what he wants and brays hot air, is the more God does something to vindicate the man..

    • May 13, 2016

Well put this time Mr. Linton was on the right track and look at the mess we are in today and some people are so clueless they just don’t know where to turn, well they should all go to their PM and stop protecting him he has all the money we don’t have any.. Dominicans ask yourselves why all of a sudden PM was signing contracts all over the place and spending money for By- Election, he knows what is coming Dominica is in a hell of a lot of shit so he is trying to cover his behind but it’s to late, justice must be done and Dominicans should call on Pinard Burns to return all of Dominicans money because Mr. Linton was correct, Now Tony A senior council cannot go and bribe any person in high place to help his Boss it’s not going to work. And the judges in the Court systems have to be careful how they handle the cases that will come before them because the eyes of the world will be on them.
This is very serious so I wonder what Levi Peters was thinking when he made that statement.

Let’s forget for now about the people from Dominica named. Let’s even forget about the companies mentioned and instead, let’s focus on “THE GOVERNMENT OF DOMINICA” that is listed as a shareholder, the one and only government mentioned in this scandal. If this one does not get us upset and demand the resignation of the entire government, nothing again will.

I know UWP has scheduled some meetings this week in the Soufriere Constituency as they prepare for the by-election, but I believe they need to use this momentum and carry it to the capital, until change comes. From Soufriere, they need to motorcade to Roseau and stay there protesting, like we did in May of 1979, until we get these rascals out!

if you are a shareholder in a company, does that give you inside track of what the company is doing?stop being a political jackass the government being a shareholder, only makes them a shareholder, not the owners, therefor they can not be held responsible for the companies actions, unless you have proven facts of their involvement in such schemes as money laundering, and you know how that goes with linton and his stupid accusations, right now you have to wonder if he have a billion dollars on his account,so let he go ahead

      • Jonathan St Jean
        May 13, 2016

“forreal” when you have 51% of the shares of a company, you call the shots. Even if the other shareholders want to do anything else they can’t and will never have enough votes to deny you your way. That being said a good shareholder with 51% of the shares must have the inside scope of what goes on because he can have his people running things if he wants to.”forreal” talk about things you know and don’t let it be so obvious that you don’t know much. You sound so dumb

My people from Soufruere will not comply as they are bamboozled with their bits of plywood and cents which they receive from the Red clinic.

I felt so humiliated and totally embarrassed watching my people lining up waiting to beg from the PM when he visited Soufriere recently.

When did my fellow constituents become so moribund and pathetically gullible?

Our ancestors are turning in their graves as they watch Soufriere people adopt a mentality of subservience and apathy!

    • Jeam Simpson
      May 13, 2016

Your concern was settled in the BVI matter. WE know the government of Dominica is the majority shareholder of the Layou River Hotel property. Your leader spent an entire week in the a court in the BVI listening to the court case in which he himself, through his daily reports to Q-95, admitted that PM Skerrit was unwavering in his evidence. That was settled and is public knowledge. Where are you going with that?

      • May 13, 2016

Jeam it’s not Linton that’s investigating this scandal it’s USA, England and others, it’s FBI, CIA and a lot more federal Agencies so take your head out of the sand and go on the Net and read for yourself, other countries their PM’s and President are falling like fly so if you want to blame any one take it to the PM ask his to come out speak to the Nation, but he has to wait for someone of his writers to put something together for him to read

  10. May 12, 2016

This is outrageous!!! It’s bad enough to hear that Dominica has 66 companies but to see the government of Dominica listed as a shareholder really has me mad and thinking it’s time for action.

I was listening to Q95 this AM and heard Mr. Linton saying how the UWP will be in the Soufriere Constituency
with the message. That’s good but we need to take it to w streets of Roseau and demand the resignation of this corrupt enterprise called the government of Dominica. Now is time for action as the world is looking

The frightening thing about information in the Panama Papers is, where as Antigua seems to have the most companies in the Caribbean, three the amount seen in Dominica, Dominica is the ONLY country where the GOVERNMENT is mentioned as a company or stockholder. That to me is the most disturbing thing because the government of Dominica speaks of all of us and all of us should demand answers from Skerrit .

  13. Winston
    May 12, 2016

It also includes a number of people in Dominica!

    • AAGabriel
      May 12, 2016

But who are these people? Some of them are even dead! Others are lawyers working as passport agents and others are confidants of certain people in government. Ask yourself another question, Dominica doesn’t have many wealthy people apart from the big business guys and of course some Government Ministers. Any connection to this big business guys? No! Any potential connections to these Ministers. Yes! All of this and much more will be revealed soon. My guess, it’s about hidden proceeds of passport money and in my opinion it is only the tip of the iceberg.

  14. May 12, 2016

My fellow Dominicans, I would like each of you to take a moment and consider the fact that these damning reports are not coming from the opposition, their affiliates or supporters. These reports represents the seriousness of the Panama Papers as an international and global concern. It should now start to impress on our Citizenry that these revelations are far more than an interesting topic of conversation. It is one of the largest leaks of secret documents EVER released to the public exposing a network of shady financial dealings that has tremendous legal implications for those involved. In the case of Dominica, where there are no major corporations with millions in assets to justify the numerous offshore accounts and registered shell companies, explaining the source of these hidden funds will undoubtedly prove extremely difficult for those named. As investigations progress we will, without doubt, be stunned at the level of corruption within our midst.

Since teleSUR is the propaganda engine of the Maduro regime, people should be very wary of taking any of their articles seriously. The only reason they’re reporting negatively about Caribbean tax havens is that they want to make it as difficult as possible for Venezuelans to escape the government that is crushing them.
