REDjet tickets go on sale today

The Caribbean’s newest airline, REDjet, which has branded itself as the region’s first low-cost carrier, has announced plans to begin selling tickets today.

In a statement, the airline said that “our first flights will launch from the 8th May and will feature frequent trips to our first destinations, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad”.

“We know that so many you have all been eagerly awaiting our launch and the feedback has been massive. We promised not to disappoint and not only are we launching with fares from US$9.99 one-way excluding Government Taxes and Charges, but we are also launching 250,000 seats for US$49.99 or under,” the airline said.

The New Winair website, instituted 7 April, does show Dominica as one of their destinations and their booking system does accept flight bookings during May. Maybe you know more than Winair put into the public domain and if so we would all like to share that.

competition is GOOD! They need to add D/ca to one of their destinations! We are being taken advantage of by our sole airline provider because we don’t have a choice!

Which airline can stay in business on $9.99 fares? What is the bus fare from Roseau to Marigot?

Allan Stanford tried the low cost approach. He was losing money hands over fists. Ask Air Jamaica about the cost of running an airline. Talk to CAL which is heavily subsidized by the Trini government. Even with subsidized cost of fuel, they are still losing money.

I hope they have a direct connection to Fort Knox. With rising fuel prices and low fares, they will need to tap into that vault.

No need to be that pessimistic. Both Easy jet and Ryan air in Europe are highly successful medium-range discount carriers, which co-exist alongside regular airlines such as B.A., Lufthansa, Air France-KLM etc. and I’m sure Redjet will have studied their business models very closely.
First of all the rates quoted are in U.S.$ (not E.C.$ ). Secondly, not all seats will be available at U.S.$9.99. This is merely a come-on, an “enticer”, which whilst true will not be extended to all passengers on any given flight. One would have to study the offer very closely to determine conditions and any possible add-ons. After all that, remember you still have an option to fly to Trinidad, Jamaica or Guiana by either LIAT and/or CAL but these will have to offer a superior, all-in service to justify their higher fares. And yes, it is possible to fly by Ryanair from London to a destination in Europe for less than the taxi fare to the airport!

Europe is not the Caribbean. Look at the economies of scale.

Let’s talk in 2 years. If they are still around I will eat my words.

Piper, you are right. That’s why Redjet concentrate on high volume routes, just like the budget airlines do in Europe. There is one other important factor, which we must not overlook. Carriers like Redjet tap into a market that hitherto would not have travelled by air and would not have been customers of regular carriers like LIAT because of because of cost constraints. In other words, their business model expands the overall market for air travel. I wish them luck.

Boy I hope dca get some flights from redjet. We really need it. Even if it is once a week via Bdos. People will go for that connection instead of liat, trust me. On e the service is good. And it will make a change to those little cramp up seats too. Jah know my knees take enough pain on those little planes already.
