The Team Unity election promise of term limits for the office of prime minister is going to parliament this week.

The government has confirmed that it is about to introduce in the House, The Tenure of Office of Prime Minister Bill, 2015.

The proposed legislation will stipulate two five year terms for office of the prime minister.

The move is being welcomed by Dwyer Astaphan of watchdog body Operation Rescue.

“It is part of the process of bringing some sanity to the constitutional dictatorships that we have in these countries,” he said.

Wiil the pm of st kitts be stepping down as leader of his party to make way for another party leader.if he says that there should a two term majority for the pm,i believe he should also propose a two term limit on his party leadership.it makes no sense that after two terms he can no longer contest as pm,yet he remains the leader of the party.

I have been saying that for a while on DNO, was just waiting for the next related story. Again, if UWP/Lennox takes that up as part of their winning strategy they will score major points, but ….. it has to be a constitutional amendment so politicians don’t keep changing it. Two terms are enough. We see what happens when they are there for 15 years, like Mamo they get lazy manipulating all those around them at will by the fingers. 2 terms!

  9. November 17, 2015

If the party is doing good they should stay as long as the people vote them in.For this DLP party they really need to go because in 15 yrs they have done very little for Dominica, All I see is the PM and his peeps are getting richer while the people are begging. Am so sick of the begging it drives me crazy that’s one of the reasons I don’t like to visit to much beggars.Mr.Pm please create more jobs so that we who decide to visit can to that without the fear of being disturbed by all this beggars.

Wow.nice move I support you Mr pm it is also refreshing to hear this Astaphan gentleman he is so unlike the one we have in Dominica who is responsible for defending the pm . This is the kind of legislation we we should be pwaysay to pass in Dominica than that old draconian banking non sense they pass to further their greedy selfish corrupt political machinations .i hope El supremo takes a lfrom the government and people of St.KitSt . Kitts& Nevis.

That should be a constitutional provision, not a law that can be easily overturned by any party if they have a strong majority.

With population sizes of less than 150,000 in many territories in the Caribbean and the reluctance of many persons to get involved in electoral politics, I wonder if two consecutive term limits is sufficient. I am for term limit, but I would limit it to no more than three consecutive terms.

I am almost sure you’re not going to hear of corruption in St.Kitts for a long time if that happen… watch and see. remember I said almost. Good move by St.Kitts. let me know what I have to do to move up there. I am proud on my beautiful Dominica, the most beautiful island in the Caribbean but I am seeing we are going down the drain and relly do not want to stay to see it happen.

Sad Times In Dominica… sad times

NOT in Dominica! Our dear and precious Supreme Leader is here for LIFE!!!! Let the non-supporters comment now on how Dominica needs to follow suit and learn from this example etc.. The fact is Labourites will ALWAYS have a majority of the votes in Parliament and in the Country. The decision to change Leaders rests solely in the hands of Labourites. Thank God!

Not in Dominica the idiot cried, that is why Dominica is destine to be backward for as long as people like you and Skerrit is alive.

Skerrit said he want to run Dominica for fifty years, I believe idiots like you will keep him there. But there is something that is inevitable for all of us, that might be Skerrit\’s exit!

Rosie wanted it badly, he said at least five years, with his reputation he made an untimely exit, due to natural causes: His successor Pierre Charles took over and vowed for the \”long hall\” political immortality he claimed. He also made his exist, by natural physiological causes, they are not remembered by many Dominicans, they now exist in oblivion!

How long will it take before your god takes his exist into oblivion never to be remembered by the nation?

The late Dame Eugenia said it best when she famously told a reporter ” I do not believe that people should rule for more than ten years, they get lazy, things don’t get done “. Term limits fir Caribbean Prime Ministers is an idea whose time had come. Bravo St Kitts!

I recommend three(3) terms of five(5) years each as the limit in all OECS member-states. This is more or less consistent wth good governance norms.

      November 17, 2015

I want less of it Negre, not more. Two terms are quite adequate. The P.M. in his election campaign used the President of the U.S.A. as his role model for leadership. He would do well in following him in term limitations also.

  19. what prevents
    November 17, 2015

what prevents the opposition when it holds office from reversing the move? I believe a change of this magnitude should be made by referendum. In so doing the general public will decide by majority of let us say 75% majority so no government can simply reverse such decision when they get in.

We definitely need prime ministerial term limits here in DA
