St. Lucia calls for help; death toll rises

Miami, Florida (CNN) — Tropical Storm Tomas — which killed at least 12 people on St. Lucia — “could pose a significant threat” to Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic later this week, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday.

The death toll on St. Lucia, meanwhile, may rise, as two other people were missing, said Kirby Allain, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Organization on the island. Tomas hit St. Lucia as a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday morning and caused major damage by the time its winds subsided Monday night, he said.

Five people died in a landslide when part of a mountain crashed down, crossed a hill and smashed into the Livity Arts Studio, crushing the family that was inside, Allain said. Tourists often stopped by the studio when visiting the island, he said.

Several landslides isolated the community of Soufriere, a spot popular with tourists on the island’s southwest coast, he said.

An aerial tour of the island on Monday revealed widespread damage, he said. Roads into one community were blocked, leaving the area accessible only by boat.

“It’s not a pretty sight,” Allain said.

I am sorry to hear that St. Lucia was so badly hit by the hurricane. I have a few friends who are from St. Lucia and who are obviously saddened.
My heartfelt sympathy to the family of those who died in the hurricane.
When a hurricane/storm is known to be approaching, the first thing to do is to pray to God for protection as homes and businesses are being secured.
The government should inform those who may be residing below a mountain/hill to vacate that area. Of course, everyone hopes that they will be secure. It is just too sad that so many people died and a few are missing.
I pray that God had mercy on the souls of those who passed on. May their souls rest in peace. Amen!
May God assist St. Lucia in recovering from this disaster. All will be well in time. May God bless St. Lucia and it’s nationals and give them strength.
St. Lucia will receive help as is done to any country in times of disasters as hurricanes and others.

I was looking at an Ariel video and observed that most of the damage was caused by mudslides. I was in a conference 5 years ago and there was a forestry official from St Lucia she had warned that St Lucia was having a serious problem of deforestration in developing the country. Now we see the effects of what she was saying. Development comes at a cost, development without planing spells disaster. Its sad when lives a lost. Sometimes the choices we make in life will destroy us, moral spiritual physical etc.
We have to pray for strength but most of all wisdom to make the right choices. St Lucia i am sorry and my heart goes out to all the people of Lucia. As the Reggea artist Peter Tosh said we have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves up and start all over again because life goes on.

There are at least 12 people dead in St.Lucia according to the island’s PM and you still have a story saying that 5 are dead. Every other media in the region has 12 dead. Please update your story and get the facts.

    ADMIN
The story said AT LEAST five…. it never said five… at least give means, it’s not less than five and it is probably higher on five… the first official figure was five dead… then there were unofficial reports about more than five…
