St. Lucia manufacturers blast VAT

President of the St. Lucia Manufacturers Association Paula Calderon has warned policymakers behind the Value Added Tax (VAT) implementation that its members may soon be out of business because of the implications of certain policies.

In a statement, Calderon said her association was outraged by the implementation of VAT policies which she claims are crushing the already struggling manufacturing sector.

She said manufacturers had brought some of these concerns to the authorities prior to the October 1 implementation, but instead of being addressed other measures not previously discussed have been introduced.

If the country your company is based in is putting in place policies that are going to stiffle your business, I think it is time to consider changing countries. There are many other countries willing to take in these companies

Yes well we need to understand the consequences of, be able to connect the dots between, our white elphants and costly infrastructure that we love so much. The government has to find a way to pay for it and that is through taxes. So are we learning yet to be careful what we demand our governments build for us?

Garçon you fool-ish, do some research and comprehend the His-Story about Taxes,,,

Taxes is not generated to repay for infrastructure, taxes is implemented so the Ones on-top can remain on-top,,,

The general rule is that Corporations don’t pay Taxes once the great hands of the Account can cook the books to make it look like there was no net Profit,,,

But the extrinsic Monetary system controlled by the ones who claim they came from Zion make the revelation that all your exchange, when doing service for public good by giving an intrinsic valuable thing in exchange for extrinsic valuable things is taxable as profits,,,

How many of these people who are in government or the public service every started or ran a business. The same thing applies in Dominca. You have a set of people who whether they work or not get a salary. Do you really believe they will even begin to understand what the business sector is saying? Government employees have a completely dofferent mindset than business people. Good luck talking to a stone wall.

If you guys take a minute or two and actually research the VAT you will realise that the Companies that are registered for VAT should NEVER be complaining.
With VAT the person who actually pays are the final consumers…so if your arguement was that the final comsumer is feeling the squeeze then i would agree with you.
Example: Company X imports products from Canada. When the product lands in Dominica upon clearing the company pays $5000 VAT. At the end of the MONTH when company X is doing his VAT return lets say he collected VAT from his customers of $10000 he removes the $5000 VAT he paid at customs and only pays the Government $5000.
The business comunity is complaining the VAT makes their electricity bill high..another lie cause the VAT they pay on electricity is a deduction to them monthly..so do not blame the VAT blame Domlec cause basically is only the Domlec portion of the bill that they pay.

      Very true.

    • ?????
      October 17, 2012

that is not entirely true. the people who make the policies were placed in positions to look after, not the government affairs but the labour party intrest, some of these people have no idea how to do their jobs, some are there just to collect a salary and its perks and the rest are just plain ‘YES MEN’. so to sum it up, the prime minister is the manager of all his hence men positions, they cannot take any decision without his OK and sometimes he forces things down their throat regardless if they like it or not.

is not that the place hard is the governments that cannot understand that with our small populations in which sometimes 40% are unemployed and most of the remaining are children u cannot implement high VAT rates that only raises prises and sends investors to other places customs already killign the poor man trying to make a dolar the cost of electricity so high so that runs up costs u have to pay ur workers a good enough salary so they can survive u have to now pay a high VAT on ur products which cuts from the companies profits so slowly but surely all u doign is crippling the poor company owners one by one small island companies just goign to die one after the other and the backbone of ur country is just goign to be broken our countries all goign to end up the way haiti ended up slowly but surely

Give us an alternative because we are the first to complain about feeder roads bad, all roads bad this bad that bad etc etc, and govt must do this and must do that blah blah blah…

We also cry down other countries assisting us saying we are a begging country and that there is a culture of mendacacy that is developing because govt is begging other countrie for grant funds to develope infrastructure that would have normally been paid by the tax payers…

Boy i tell you, you ppl need education, stop listening to Q they are not helping with your development!!

      • October 17, 2012

Joe, were feeder roads not built and maintained before VAT? Also now that we pay VAT are feeder roads in better condition now than they were before Vat.
Joe, you really need to educate yourself and start to listen to Q95 because whoever you listening to sure does not help your mental development.

nothing wrong with vat, its just that peoples salaries are not ADJUSTED to catter for those taxes that are imposed from time to time.

    October 16, 2012

Ms. Caulderon fight hard against VAT. Here in DA we got VAT which gives the government a lot of money but takes money away from the poor people. VAT on everything u buy! That is a killer for the poor man and the small business.

      October 17, 2012

Right on. The whole objective of taxes is to impoverish the population while the fat cats live it up.
