Venezuela food shortages leave zoo animals hungry

Some 50 animals have starved to death in the last six months at one of Venezuela’s main zoos, according to a union leader, due to chronic food shortages that have plagued the crisis-stricken South American nation.

The fatalities at the Caricuao zoo in Caracas include Vietnamese pigs, tapirs, rabbits and birds – some of whom had not eaten for two weeks, according to Marlene Sifontes, 52, a union leader for employees of state parks agency Inparques which oversees zoos.

Other animals are at risk across the country.

Their troubles mirror those of Venezuelans who routinely skip meals or spend hours in supermarket lines, at times chanting “We want food!” or even looting, amid an unprecedented economic downturn in the OPEC nation.

“The story of the animals at Caricuao is a metaphor for Venezuelan suffering,” said Sifontes.

Alas ; the drama that strikes Venezuela today is no surprise ; it is the usual consequence of a leftist ( communist like ) politic.
it all started with crazy Chavez and now it continues with his “son” Maduro.
Queing in front of empty stores is very common in Cuba and was so in USSR during the communist era…
Instead of using the oil money for projects development and diversifying the economy, money was spread anyhow and now …money finished !
Instead of nationalizing the economy, the dictators should have encouraged private investments.
It is sad to remember that several small caribbean nations brought their support to the venezuelan dictatorship, joining the ALBA, with the hope of getting some crumbs from that oil money, hypnotysed by Chavez rhetoric against western democracies like EU and USA

I don’t understand a country which is supposed to to have vast amount of land space for planting any amount of fruit trees and food for both human and animal, that there should be such hunger among both human and animal :?: The illegal rogue government of Venezuela has made the people so dependent on them, just because of wanting to hold on to power, they kill their agriculture and have people depending on supermarkets and importation of food! This is the same thing the illegal rogue government of Dominica is doing, killing agriculture,so their friends and cabal can build more shops to import food, then have the people get poor where they will have to depend on them for handouts,so the people can go shop at their cabals shops! This is the rogue governance style of these dictators, just to remain in power! But it does not work, must backfire and go back to haunt them! No matter what evil man try,it’s not gonna last! The true patriots of Waitukubuli should not relent, got to keep the…
