High levels of crime and insecurity, fuelled by organised gangsters, are threatening to undermine social and economic growth in the Caribbean and Latin America, the United Nations development chief has warned, even as the organisation praised the region for making “steady improvements” in governance.
“Trans-national criminal organizations pose a huge threat to state security institutions whose mandate is limited to the national context,” the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark said while on a visit Wednesday to Mexico, torn by bloody struggles between drug smuggling gangs and Mexican authorities.”
oh please if the un wants to see a difference in crime maybe people in countries like the us britain france etc should stop passing laws that prevent real development in the caribbean, maybe stop their stupid war on drugs that do nothing but make it the only profitable way for people in the caribbean and latin america to acquire wealth. I think we need to accept that there is a serious violent crime problems among blacks – especially black. We can’t deny the statistics. We always like to compare, rather than accept the problem exists.
River Rain. In the US, Latino is not a race, but an ethnic group. So you can be White or Black Latino — of Hispanic origin they call it.
Drugs need to be legalized to help solve the problem. Then treat it as a public health issue rather than a criminal one…
there will be no peace unless everybody get a peice. all them things is a direct result of leaders, imperialists and nations. You took away from some to give some now they are taking it back
this is something that the caribbean and its leaders needs to address head on because we caribbean people love our PEACE. right now a life of crime is looking very attractive from the outside, so a word of advise, provide more oppourtunities for all becuase we all want to live comfortably
There are two sets of violent people, they just wanna steal and kill.(afro descendents and latins)..Afro descendents are the worst…what do you guys think?
@Feel it.
You started off as if you were making a very controversal statement then, I am happy to note, you asked the question: “what do you guys think?”
On matters like that, I dont trust popular impressions because in this day and age everybody has an agenda and we are fed information accordingly.
This is why I went to the source, and here is what I found at http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/homicide/race.cfm:
Bureau of Justice Statistics Homicide trends in the U.S.: Trends by race
Homicide Type by Race, 1976-2005 Offenders
All homicides:
Whites-45.8%; Blacks-52.2%; Other-2.0%
In accepting these figures one must note the low percentage of “Other” and wonder what “Other” means – Orientals? American Indians? Latinos? All of them?
I think it is hardly likely that the small percentage of “Other” could include Latinos? And since it is unlikely that they would be placed with the “Whites”, I am left to assume that they have been placed among the Blacks. This would inflate the percentage of “Black” Offenders shown. I cannot be positive about this, but we know that when latinos are bad they are generally lumped with the Blacks.
Finally, I Could not find figures for a later period than 2005.
Never assume anything! The U.S. Bureau of Justice clearly categorizes its statistics by race and “latinos” are neither included in “whites” or “blacks” but are listed under their own category.
Out of a total U.S. prison population of 2.1 million in 2009 the three main racial groups are represented as follows (male & female prisoners combined, rounded to the nearest ‘000):
white: 786,000
black: 906,000
hispanic: 474,000
Out of a total U.S. population of some 308.75 million in 2010 “whites” represented 72.4% and “black or African” 12.6%. Whichever way one looks at the figures, as a group “blacks” are over-represented as “persons under correctional control” as the U.S. authorities so euphemistically put it.
