Religious fraternity rejoices

Tommy Lee Sparta at the Melville Hall Airport on Sunday afternoon

The religious fraternity here believes that God has answered its prayers in light of the detention of dancehall artiste, Tommy Lee Sparta, after he was denied entry into Dominica on Sunday.

“All I have to say is we praise God greatly … he has shown to us that when his people come together and begin to pray with a united heart that God responds to the prayer of his people,” Chairman of the Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches (DAEC), Pastor Joseph Benjamin, told DNO on Monday. “I think God has said to Dominica that he has not forgotten Dominica, and he loves this nation and he wants to protect this country.”

DAEC has been one of the groups to openly oppose the appearance of Tommy Lee in a concert slated for last Sunday night.

The organization made its opinion known some weeks aback in a release which said it expresses “deep concerns with the decision by a local business entity/promoter to invite entertainer Tommy Lee Sparta to feature at a planned concert.”

It called for a boycott of the concert on the basis that “the lyrics of the music by Sparta promotes violence, a phenomenon that we are currently grappling with in our nation…”

Tommy Lee was denied entry and detained in Dominica on Sunday.

When asked whether or not the religious fraternity has the right dictate what type of music the general public listens to, Benjamin said no, but DAEC took a position on the matter and prayed.

“We do not have the right to do that, we took a position, we prayed, we believe God and we believe that whatever happens it will just be for the honour and glory of God,” he stated. “We do not have a right to decide for people what they want to listen to, who they want to listen to. We do not have that power, we do not have that right.”

He, however, noted that the religious community has a responsibility to do whatever is possible to protect Dominica, “from the inflow of any negative information that will affect this country in a negative way … we will speak against it.”

Authorities are yet to disclose to the public why Sparta who was to perform at a concert in Portsmouth on Sunday night, has been refused entry into Dominica.

What do we want? Most of the times it is hard to figure us out? Or have we already figured us out?

For a very long time the opposition has been blasting the Religious Fraternity for not taking a stance of things that they figure are important to Dominica, only because they say so; and also of course, only what they want them to take a stance on whether it makes sense to the Religious Fraternity or not, but only on opposition’s say so.

Now the same Religious Fraternity has taken a stance on something they believe is wrong; once again the opposition is not happy. Why? Go figure this one out. The phrase “darned if you do, darned if you don’t” comes to mind. It screams to us loudly as to what or whom is dictatorial in Dominica; because once again, the same people are taking cheap potshots at these same body of people.

It would seem only one set of people are always correct in Dominica and only they, it would seem. know what is right no matter how wrong they are.

The US has a part of its constitution something called the separation of ‘Church and State’ because the founders did not want religion to infiltrate or run the country .Unfortunately It is beginning to do this in DA. Instead of progressing we are going backwards. If you dislike the man’s music so much do not patronize it. Unless the man has a criminal record he has every right to be heard. It is a matter of time before other country’s reciprocate against us. I guess we are competing with Russia and Uganda for numero uno! by our actions we will soon get there.

This is more political than religeous. Here you have a self confessed god prime minister responding to the so called prayers of some christians. This is deliberat to buy votes…make no mistake about it.these guys are desperate, they will do any thing coming up to election. The opposition must handle this carefully and stick to the issue of Human Rights, which the govt has no regards for, as this case demonstrates. This had Nothing to do with security. Wise up Dominicans, you christians are fools to believe the heavenly God has answered your prayers because your actions have made this young man gain a stronger following with no souls won. What is your purpose on Earth? I have been tought that it is to win souls and to further Gods Kingdom in short. You have lost the opportunity to win one soul and with him goes many.you have failed. Dominicans will deal the earthly god at the polls. Change must come!!!!

the religious community has a responsibility to do whatever is possible to protect Dominica, “from the inflow of any negative information that will affect this country in a negative way … we will speak against it.” Why them are you not speaking about the wrong doings by Dominicans everyday, the drug abuse, rapes, killings, stealing and everything else. Why is there not a protest against marpin and sat for airing movies/tv shows that encourage crime??? The degradation of our society started way before TLS sang his 1st tune…why don’t we get that reaction for EVERYTHING that affects this country in a negative way….Sparta will not perform and i am sure society will not improve as a result

There was a time when religion ruled the world. It is known as the dark ages.It is very disturbing to hear Pastor Joseph Benjamin say quote “however, noted that the religious community has a responsibility to do whatever is possible to protect Dominica,” How absurd it is for Pastor Joseph Benjamin to believe such thing. This is the same attitude the religious leaders had in the time of the dark ages. The sad thing about this is, religious beliefs teaches people to be satisfied with not understanding other people and world they live in.

What a joy that “our God” could take the time out to decide what secular music and which secular artist will be part of our carnival, while hundreds of thousands of our African brothers and sisters kill each other daily with machetes, not to mention Syria, Kosovo or Ukraine. But Tommy Lee, coming to the second city, no, I won’t let that be.

God is like the hub of a great wheel, with all the spokes representing different religions coming together at the hub. There is so much more than Christianity in our world, and all of them teach morality, kindness and love for your neighbors (even if you disagree with them). Dominica needs to get off the wheel of FEAR and begin to really live as one with joy, kindness and caring for one another. Dominica will then be a real Paradise on Earth.

I am sad for Iran–oh, wait, sorry, Dominica. I confused one theocratic government with religious zealots in it for another. My bad.

Dominica, you need to grow up and realise that there are many different faiths and stances on religion out there, and the only free and fair way to practice any religion is to allow for diversity, including in entertainment. You cannot prevent things from entering the island and then act surprised when everyone wants to listen to TLS’ music (for example). And unless you can scientifically prove this thing about “evil” entering the island through people like TLS, don’t say it like it’s a fact.

      February 24, 2014

Sorry to inform you but we have moral standards… if you’re idea of entertainment is spewing hate and murder to children and adults alike then you need an exorcism yourself! religion is not the issue… this is about the moral high-ground and we have it.

FYI the problem with Iran is not religion. Iran issue is they let their religion control the government as a matter of fact the religion is the government. i doubt you could say the same for Dominica. The issue at hand is not a religious one.

      • Gary
        February 25, 2014

        To UDOHREADYET

There is something you need to understand about moral standards.Morals should not be legislated and people must not impose their morals on others period.Everyone is entitled to have their own set of morals for themselves and not enforce their morals on others or set some kind of standard to as to what is acceptable or not acceptable morals. and this is what religious people just do not understand, thinking they can impose their morals on a Nation. It is one of the reason why we have all these wars, intolerance and hatred in the world, religious people imposing their morals and beliefs on people in the name of God.

To say that religion is not the problem causing this controversy is somewhat arrogant and sound like someone with a tunnel vision who does not want to see religion for what it is, very destructive. You second comment regarding Iran is contradicting and full of jargon.

pastor I thin we need to take a Jesus approach to these things. we need to evangelize. why didn’t you set up a meeting with him while on island and speak to him. Bring Jesus to him. show him that Jesus is love and compassionate and no matter who we are Jesus loves us and will forgive us. This will create a greater impact. As Christians we need to stop preaching to the choir but instead go into the highways and by ways and speak to those among us who are yet to fully understand the magnitude of God’s love. who knows probably we could have turned his life around by we taking a different approach to his coming on island and help convert him to Christianity.

@…. I told my self that I was not going to make any comment on this fiasco that’s going on about this dude Tommy Lee. But your comment is so true that I am forced to comment. The so called ”Evangelicals” so read their bibles and then really evangelize the nation instead of worring about this guy. So many of them have in their homes lyrics of several calypsonians and I do not hear them complai about them coming to DA to perform. Their are so many other artists who sing song with subliminal messages, and we allow our children to listen to them, yet we make such a big fuss about TLS. Now for those of you who plan to give thumbs down that won’t bother me. Unless you read the “ENTIRE BIBLE” that is the old and New Testament you are just wasitng your time to give me thumbs down. re-read the Commandments of God as found in Exodus 20, and then make your comments to my blog. And lastly if we raise our children according to the bible we would not have to worry about these artiste coming to perform in our beloved country. Do you all plan to take part in the up-coming carnival? Something to think about!

    I am not surprised. February 24, 2014

Another show between the religious body and politicians. “when his people come together and begin to pray with a united heart that God responds to the prayer of his people,” President of the Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches.” Pastor Joseph Benjamin himself has been labeled by the Christian church here as a cult and he is not even allowed to preach in several churches on the island. So I hope they can come together to pray against dis-unity of the church. While what he said sounds religiously correct, the question is, where were they all along when wrong dominated our island for so long? Or are they performing their religiuos show based who does what? Their show is sure not based on spiritual conviction. Where were when:
    1. Hon. Matthew Walters, a devout Catholic referred to Skerrit as Jesus and Edison James as Barabas? Similar sentiments were also made by Hon. Peter St. Jean who was at that time a pastor / preacher. None of them condemned that? At a time when he was not even married and you know….? Exo. 20:7. They were comfortable with that I guess.

    2. Evangelist Peter performed the spiritual blessing when Savarin was controversially made president? They knew many Dominicans in all walks of life, be it DLP, UWP,DFP, Christians and non Christians did not support the manner in which it was done and when people planned to protest. skerro sent police all over. Where was pastor Joseph Benjamin and others? Why did they not pray against that? PA was the one that performed the blessing. How hypocrite! Read 1 Cor. 8: 10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?

12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

As a young man that spent all his young life in Antigua during the reign od the ALP, pastor Joseph Benjamin came to Dominica as a laborite and he supports everything done by the DLP and says nothing. Strange he talking now and I am left to wonder if it is a religious stance or political especially knowing how the organizers who are laborites, but do not support the nonsense of Skerrit.

As a strong believer in the Almighty, I am appalled to say the least by the statements made from the Church Leader. We are all God’s creation. We should never rejoice when another suffers. We are to win souls for God, not assist in strengthening anything contradictory to the teachings of Christ. Injustice is an unrighteousness, it is wrong to violate an individual’s human rights. I totally condemn all inhumane acts against this fellow Caricom brother.

i really dont get why this communuity is so bent on blocking a jamaican dancehall artist fr coming to dominica to perform for an hr or so, get paid, n fly back to jamaica. r they really that deluded that they think that blocking a performance of one man is gonna rid the country of its evil doings?

they need to take a look at their own church. cease committing adultery and statutory rape, that will better the country. the country’s leaders need to stop the bribery and corruption, that will better the country. quit trying to take a man’s meal out of his mouth, allow pple medical assistance, that will be a better use of ur time. pray for others instead of trying to hold them down. that will help the country. i’ve so had it with these pple

“I think God has said to Dominica that he has not forgotten Dominica, and he loves this nation and he wants to protect this country.” I guess God only knows Dominica in certain respects, what about unemployment, natural disasters etc. Where is God for all of these things? While I have not listened to any music of this artist, I really don’t understand what the real issue is here. His denial of entry has nothing to do with God and prayer. It’s simply because certain religious fractions and persons were adamant about having this individual not perform here, and the relevant authorities caved into the pressure. I really think that religion dictates too much of what happens in Dominica. Not all of us subscribe to your religion, and some of us are not religious too.

allu blaming allu god once again. I guess the Dominica immigration is God when convenient. CARICOM People, the fanatically driven church is NOT speaking for Dominicans. We want our relations to grow stronger with you, not deplete. We strongly believe that you are aware that the church is responsible, not god, and certainly not Dominicans! This is a desperate, willful, and a feeling of hopelessness, on the part of the clergy to destroy what little unity is left within the regional sector. We will fight this outrageous blatant position taken by clergy members, to dismantle our love for each other. We stand in unity!

“The Religious Fraternity Rejoices”, is this true? Whoa! People of God are rejoicing the persecution of a Caribbean artist is unbelievable.
I am no fan of the artist, I do not know his songs, I tried to listen to one played on radio and did not understand a thing, but he has a right to perform to people who have a right to see him. The religious people have a right to protest but they have no right to prevent other people from listening to what they want to.
I guess Skerrit will intervene after all the damage is done, like a hero. But the government of Dominica must be held responsible for that shameful behaviour.
They knew the guy was coming they could have issued a ban long in advance.

    • February 24, 2014

Well said and I just hope the people of Dominica dont fall for his explanation. I dont like artists that sing “RAP” but I wouldnt prevent them from comming in but if their are legal reasons for preventing them then that would be another case. Why was Tommy Lee treated in that manner, we have to keep calling for the reasons who will respond is yet to to be seen. The Custom officers were told by someone higher to stop Tommy Lee so we cannot put the blame on them.
Or does this have to do with the continuous plan is bring down the ” DOUGLA FAMILY ” by those who are hidding in the dark we all know Ian is just use as a mat in his party .

It is not far fetch to assume that the Sparta situation is as a result of the work of politicians in government – no doubt and anyone who says otherwise are simply being . Yes I said it. We know that the religious leaders who don’t get involve in political matter did write a letter to the PM regarding Tommy Lee Sparta – tell them to deny it.
Well if god punish Sparta by bringing the country into dispute, definite law suits and tremendous set back on our tourism promotion then god sure have a F up way of doing things.

Get ready for another decline in church membership in Dominica. This is history repeating – Rastafari back in the 70′s, were driven to madness and the church was in the forefront of the battle, to ensure that the movement did not take ground, therefore rendering them defeat. The church membership is taking a downward slide once again, and they are not happy. They are blaming the youth now-a-days, since the youths are not in line with their tunes of bondage. This is going to hurt the church very badly

Dear pastor still don’t stop because you still have another demonstration for all the Paris and destitutes in roseau streets.

And we have pastors in churches hear having sex wit church members.stealing using god name to make money.i think this is outrageous

I believe these christians are too hypocrete… what kind of christians judge their own people. If you are true christians then only God should judge so stop the hatred and confusion. stop act like tommy Lee is the one causing these crimes and violence in dominica. we dominicans know that even if tommy lee perform or not, that some people may still listen to his music and other bad music as well either in home or public. what about the gay ship that been coming to dominica and nothing was being done about that. that is way illegal than tommy lee music because god cretaed man and woman and not man and man. remember when tripple kay sang bullet through ur head. so dont act like dominicans dont know or do anything bad. im really against them arresting someone innocently who did dominica no wrong. who wanted to go to the show can go and who didnt then keep quiet. then christians playin part and when the pastor was having sex with his own church people. so things happen everwhere especially in the church. christians not suppose to church. yall sound like yall really hate the guy when the bible say love one another. and coming together as one is not throwing out one away from u . thank you so free tommyleee!!!!!!!!~walks out pissed and hurting~

Now see why my husband didn’t want to move to jamaica. Tommy lee singing in Dominica would not have made it any worst it would still be poor.

So many ….eg pastors abusing young members, politician taking advantages of people all in the name of welfare, prominent high rankers of our educational institutions abusing males like females all in the name of seeking an education at the expense of innocent body parts. men of the law abusing their own kinds in houses, where wives has to seek other place of abord for the kids……come one Dominican. Is that the same country where carnival is accepted, with black devils on the road and women half naked, is that the same country where the gay boat bring in the most income.
