Sanctions on countries that support Venezuela regime possible says US

Ambassador George presenting his credentials to President Maduro

The United States is not ruling out sanctions against countries, individuals or legal entities that cooperate with those already on Washington’s black list on Venezuela, US Special Representative for the South American country, Elliott Abrams has said.

Abrams was asked by journalists earlier this week that if the US intends to impose, so-called ‘secondary sanctions’ against individuals, companies and foreign governments that do business with companies “dependent on the regime of [Venezuelan leader Nicolas] Maduro and his government.”
“We have not yet introduced them, secondary sanctions. Undoubtedly, this is possible,” he responded.
He explained that the appropriate decision “will depend on the behavior of the regime for a certain period of time, depends on the behavior of organizations, many of which have slightly deviated from the Maduro regime.”
“We have not yet made this decision,” said Abrams. “It is always possible, but we have not reached it yet.”
Dominica has been a very vocal supporter of Venezuela over the years and has been open in its support of Maduro even as a political and economic crisis has enveloped the South American country.
At a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), Dominica was among those that rejected a resolution not to recognize Maduro’s second term in office.
The resolution, which was presented by Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, the United States, Paraguay and Peru, was approved by 19 votes in favour.
In February, Dominica appointed Ambrose George, as Dominica’s non-resident ambassador to Venezuela, even when Maduro was becoming increasingly isolated and was being recognized by only a handful but powerful group of nations such as China, Russia and Turkey, while at same time, the United States, the EU, Canada, and other countries had thrown their support behind self-appointed interim president Juan Guaido.
In diplomatic and legal terms, secondary sanctions, such as secondary trade boycotts and foreign company  investment, involve additional economic restrictions  designed to inhibit non-US citizens and companies abroad  from doing business with a target of primary U.S. sanctions.

    “…self-appointed interim president Juan Guaido”

Guaido is not self-appointed. He won a democratic election which has not been recognized by the dictatorship of the Maduro regime. Regardless of these secondary sanctions, we should take heed of a country that refuses to recognize the outcome of a popular election lest we too fall prey to the same tactics.

ADMIN: Point of clarification: Guaido was only elected president of the National Assembly (a position akin to speaker) he was declared interim president of Venezuela by the opposition lead National Assembly citing their interpretation of article 233 of the Venezuelan constitution.

Guido was not elected president, therefore he is self appointed. It is the people who elects a president. What you reference is the position of the opposition which is just political propaganda.

May I suggest you do some research before making statements that are not based on facts.
(1). Venezuela, through its PDVSA subsidiary Citgo owns three refineries in the U.S.A. In Corpus Cristina (Texas), Lake Charles (Louisiana) Lemont (Illinois). I am not aware that the U.S.A. owns any refineries in Venezuela.
(2). According to the Sunda Times today, last Dec.the U. S.A. Overtook Russia and Saudi Arabia to become the largest producer of crude oil in the world (source EID).
I don’t believe that the U.S.A. is particularly desperate for Venezuelan crude, especially since its own is of a superior quality .
Of more concern to me is the fate of our own National Bank, should the U.S.A. bar their institutions from dealing with them in monetary traffic.

DNO, i understand this is your new site. The ball is in your court. So you can choose and decide to publish the blogs of your choice. One thing we all know, men will always continue to hide the truth and massage their shollowness with darkness to prevent other from knowing the reality of some countries wrong doing. But remember God will bring down and crush everything which encourages darkness. Be a new site to everyone before it is to late.

America is preparing for the next presidential elections and issues related to the last one are yet to be resolved. Through it all I am yet to hear Trump or his rubberatamps say that he was not legitimately elected and Hillary is the president. Est he wants to sit in his office or golf source abed determine who should be the president in a sovereign state. How could a man who didn’t take part in an election claim to be the winner? If that was to happen in America he would have been trued, convicted and executed for treason. Now they have further and want to dictate for other countries who their friends should be. Government to government America contributes less than two million annually to each of the OECS countries. If they want to dictate who our friends should we they should step up to the plate and fill the void left when we cut ties with Venezuela, Cuba, Russia or any other power. The time has come for us to open our back yard to Russia and instill fear in America so we are seen

I will repeat for the umpteenth time. There should be a peaceful negotiated settlement to the upheavals in Venezuela. Period! No country, no matter how economically and militarily powerful should threaten another country for exercising their sovereign rights. This is setting a dangerous precedent. Who give America and Donald Trump the right to dictate the foreign policies of a sovereign country? Saudi Arabia is one of the most oppressive, repressive and brutal countries on the planet. Incredibly, the United States has very close diplomatic relations with this ignoble State. Can any country on the planet tell America to cut diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia or else? Those of you who laud and support this overt threat from the US are much too naïve and myopic.

Too much struggle for the people in Venezuela, because of this Dictator Maduro.
3 millions people had to flee their own country seeking for a better life, food and medication.
Countries calling themselves “democracies” should not support the dictatorship.

We know for sure that Skerrit says nothing about the Venezuela crisis in public since last year. Can DNO or anyone, including inspector Mills tell us why? My next question is, can anyone tell us when last Skerrit and or Melissa visited the US for holidays? No, I am not referring to an interview or as a witness of anything they may have observed. If anyone has that information please or answers to our questions please come forward and come clean to.

Venezuelan less fortunate people are desperate for help and it would be of great interest to the prime minister to put aside all the small thinking of receiving hangouts instead of supporting pure communism. Think of the people within Venezuela that don’t have a meat to eat while Maduro and his regime are properly fed. The hand out is over pm, you don’t want to mess up the US ties to Dominica for your personal interest. A lot of Dominica’s businesses are replenished with US goods and services. We cannot afford any secondary sanctions as a result of Maduro’s support or strong ties. They need help and we need too. Skerritt get your head off your … and think of the people of Dominica’s welfare, cut your ties to this dictator’s regime immediately.

What the hell this Ambrose doing there, and what has been given and to do what? Venezuela, once a prosperous developed country is now under the waters of failure and corruption, and deceitfulness with immature bus driver Maduro. Before Chavez, Venezuela was a highly promising country with resources well managed and sold under the then highly recognised President Hugh Herrera Campins. Chavez came from prison and took over Venezuela as this big Dada who had no serious developmental plan to boost up Venezuela to some higher level. Chavez went out made company with Caribbean islands Boom Boom Fly Prime Ministers, for example that failed man called Skerrit., the worse and most useless Prime Minister Domininca has seen. His focus on the poor is to abused them politically with handouts killed our active agricultural sector, reduced this farmers to beggars with endless bobol to keep his corrupt evil scam on the go, as we deteriorate into big time poverty and now receive handouts. Well if the U.S imposed sanction against Dominica we have a lot to lose. Here are some of the following
    1. The Dominican American they want to bring down and vote will not be able because the U.S registered airline will not be able to.
    2. The international so called airport he want to build before we will not be able to get the materials.3 3. 3.The cruise ships and tourist will not the able too
    4. The barrels, packages & monies that’s being send home will not the able to also the banks will be affected
    5. Communication will be a major problem.

So at this time we have to watch it and if the U.S imposed sanction this it will be a good time to remove the government out of office.

  18. With regards to the possibility of secondary sanctions against Dominica we need to look at the bigger picture. The Dominican Government is virtually, if not literally, owned and controlled by China. China is an ally and supporter of the Maduro regime in Venezuela. Dominica has no choice but to follow suit. Many Dominicans are not ready to recognize or accept that Dominica is under Chinese rule but it’s true. If you are one who doesn’t believe, please ask your Prime Minister to disclose the full contents of any and ALL MOU’s signed with the People’s Republic of China and I guarantee you every Dominican, no matter which party he/she supports, will be crying bitter tears at what our beloved Government have agreed to for money. Dominicans deserve exactly what they will soon find out to be true…Dr. 🐸

The only thing we have to fight for us is the opposition, yet some very greedy and selfish members of the opposition left Dominica in it’s mess and went to protect Skerrit. Look at the 13 new candidates he picked to protect him? Do they have a conscience? You mean to tell me every 5 years, Skerrit going to the dentist to change all his rotten teeth in his mouth and then has a gift in finding suitable replacement teeth for another 5 years? Man Erika and Maria came upon us and warned us and we didn’t pay any heed so the US now needs to come upon us not only with sanction for helping to protect Maduro but for all the evil teeth we have been performing root canal on instead of extracting them. I know the US has some very good dentists that can up root those rotten teeth without an injection. Let’s go Trump and the USA!!! In fact stop in Dominica before you even go to Venezuela because we worse than Venezuela is just that we don’t have oil or anything so people don’t know our teeth…

    10. Senior Counsels: handpicked to protect Skerrit
    11. The AG : handpicked to protect Skerrit

Randy X, I truly appreciate and concur with your comments but on this one I beg to differ. The US and Europe have their geopolitical agendas. The US, in particular, is no bastion of democracy. We don’t need to follow them lockstep. Many of their foreign policies are questionable and mostly driven by selfish ideological considerations. I once thought that the US was the standard bearer of all that was right until I began to expand my knowledge and think objectively. I’m not anti-American but many of their foreign policies are flawed and based on coercion.

Nonsense. America’s sanctions are unfair and hypocritical. America is only good at imposing its wrath on weak countries. While they are afraid of going after Russia for meddling in their last general elections and china for taking advantage and manipulating their currency, here they are again want to tell am independent countries who they think should lead Venezuela. America went to Iraq destroyed the people’s oil industry and place theirs (Halliburton) Dick Chaney. They went Egypt and creared more chaos. Nicolas is right to stand up against America for interfering in Venezuela election. Dominica is not the only Caribbean island supporting Venezuela. The other leader are to coward to say it publicly. The entire Caribbean Islands will be affected if America dicide to impose sanctions on Venezuela supporters. Which will never happen.

Rather than Skerrit focus on Dominica’s development, he behaved like this little boy he is in short pants by searching and having people of prominence around him and it is flashed on media and that makes Skerrit look like the most pretty, beautiful fool one has never seen before. But most of us in government know that Skerrit is politically illiterate and just having fun. Go

Joe Linton, Just received a note from the White House, well sorry to tell you , but they have just flushed your message in the Toilet. Says, it did not make any sense. Sorry about that. Its, Ok, yo can try again. They recognise that Trump is a very immature Person, let alone to attempt to perform at that level as the President of the mighty USA.

Although I do not support the United States bully tactics as it relates to diplomacy and decisions by sovereign nations, there are times when people are on the wrong side of history. This might just be one of those times. We cannot ignore Venezuela’s friendship and assistance to Dominica, but we also cannot ignore what’s been transpiring lately either. Whether secondary or primary, any sanctions imposed against Dominica will be the final economic nail in the coffin. Time to “Tewey Labor in Office.” Vote them out next election.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. While I’m not a fan of the opposition either, the current gov’t has destroyed the country’s economy and reputation for too long.

      Anthony

Yes. The situation in Venezuela is bad and I don’t think Maduro should be preventing food and meds from entering the country but America security and intelligence professionals have advised that Russia meddled in the American elections and Trump defends Russia and questions his own professionals.

Kim Jung of North Korea is well known internationally for human rights abuses and for suspected killing of his own half brother yet Trumps trips off to meet him and shake hands and thump shoulders. Is he intending to tighten sanctions on that country and its leader?

See the atrocities in so many places around the world – South Sudan; Saudi Arabia etc. does America love their people as much as it loves the Venezuelans? I believe that ultimately the real reason for the focus on that country above others will come to light.

Aren’t the people at the Mexican border fleeing oppression from the same region worthy of a human response? How well is the US doing there?

so true but our government is not supporting the Venezuelan people, they are supporting a corrupt dictator, maduro. for skerrit all venezuelans can die once maduro stays in power. sick people

What is happening in Venezuela is a direct result of US interference. Proof of this is their current agressive doplomtic stance to find a solution that only benifits the US.

No, i’m afraid that is dno’S JOB. Makes me wonder whos interest Dominica News Online serves. Makes me wonder if they are here for the benefit of Dominica and Dominicans. And whether they undestand that Dominica is an Independent state and that These Western countries such as the the United States have no MORAL standing to advise anyone.
